Your Best Moments This Past Golf Season (2013)

My wife and I had the opportunity to take a couple of nice vacations this year. The best part, for me, was playing two of the Big Break Courses: Iberostar Playa Paraiso in Cancun, Mexico; and, the Ka’anapali resort in Maui, Hawaii.

Got a yearly pass to a course.  This shifted my attitude from "I'd like to go play, but should I spend the money?" to "I've already paid, let's get out there."  It is a nice feeling.  Well, not the day you pay the money.  But all the other days.

Handicap came down a couple strokes.

Got better with longer clubs.

Played in tournaments - including a 3-day tourney in Rochester.  Great fun.

Haha thanks man, I quit school 1 and a bit years ago aged 17 after what seemed like a waste of time, I'm not academically gifted as far as school is concerned.. I have never been the sharpest tool in the box, but I can see a good golf shot and it just seemed logical to peruse a career in something that I could actually do and was good at.

Im not totally aware in how the UK amd US handicap systems are different, but for shooting that for shooting the course record I only came down something like 1 shot (from 1 to 0).. When you ever see a +2 or +3 figure golfer in the UK it tends to be something of a rarity, years of many many rounds below par.. Nobody really gets lower than +2 realistically..

As far as the magazines are concerned.. Well.. I can only hope you are right! Haha! :)

The return of the fairway wood!

Swapped out 2012 RBZ models (real hook machines) for a Tour Edge Exotic XRail 4W and 7W. Useful for longer shots from the fairway, getting distance out of rough, and even tee shots on tight par 4s.

Also had a good year in scrambles, regularly dropping half-wedge shots in tight for birdies or par saves.

I was able to play more golf in 2013 than ever before thanks to meeting some fellow golfers who didn't mind playing with a 35 index golfer.

It was a good year for me, I got to play The Jack Nicklaus Tournament and PGA WEST Stadium courses out by Palm Springs and will be playing Morongo's Tukwet Cyns 2 courses this month if the weather holds up.

Prior to June of this year I had only been under 100 two  times. I wound up with 12 rounds under a 100 since then, and my index dropped a full 10 points.

best score of the year was an 89 on a 70.2/123 rated course. It was sur-real for me!! The guys and gals in our golf club did not appreciate my progress this year very much!!

Now if I can just quit trying to hit the ball a few less times and just swing in up-coming rounds, I will be a happy camper.

Had a few highlights, the first bright spot is getting my index back down to sub 5 since my injury at the end of 2011 my index went back over 8 for a while, had an eagle on the first hole at my club holed out a wedge from 65yards for a 3 net 2 that paid a nice skin, also shot -1 on the front 9 on my course 38.0  138 slope, then shot a nice 74 also 72.5 135 slope, love it when the computer asks if this score correct?

I had three nice highlights to my season this year in golf.

1) I repeated as Men's Club Champion. I had a decent lead early in the back nine and made a stupid bogey on #12. I was pretty pissed with myself because I recognized that I was playing to not lose more than playing to win. I played the last 6 holes very aggressively and birdied 3 of the last 6 to run away with it!

2) My home course has an annual Ryder Cup event every 4th of July. You can sign up as a individual and get paired with a partner or you can sign up as a twosome. The format is match play foursomes just like in the real Ryder Cup and they match up everyone by each twosomes combined handicap. They break everyone into two teams, Red versus Blue, and based on everyone's handicap they try to split up the matches as evenly as possible. My son and I signed up together and based on our handicap we were our teams #1 slot and we had to face the opposing teams #1 twosome. I'll be honest with you in the morning meeting I was looking around at our team and I had a feeling we were going to get dusted. Most of the players were members and I knew their game so I had a bad feeling we were severe under dogs.

In our match I started out playing very mediocre. Part of the reason this day was a major highlight to the year was because my son played his butt off and kept us in the match. We were 2 down for nearly the entire match and would have been even farther down if it wasn't for my son draining 3 clutch putts from 15-20 feet to halve those holes. Finally with 4 holes left I caught fire. We were 2 down and I birdied 3 of the last 4 holes to give us a 1 up win.

Amazingly when we got back to the clubhouse our team had a huge lead and we ended up blowing them out 16 to 4 to win the cup!

3) This highlight actually involves me losing,lol! My goal as far as my home course was concerned this year was to win both the Club Championship and the Match Play Championship. At my home course(built in 1999) no male has ever accomplished winning both titles in the same season. I made it to the semi-finals where I had to face my son to get into the championship match. We had a great battle that day but in the end he outplayed me and won 2&1. It is one of my highlights for this past season because I'm very proud of my son for working hard at the game and taking out the Club Champion(me). He went on to win his final match and the Match Play Title so my son and I had a very fun and successful season in 2013!

Looks lik3 you got 2 Gap wedges in your bag. Is it planned or are you looking to drop one and add another hybrid to bridge the gap between your 17º 2hybrid and your 4 iron??

Getting my first ever birdie on a 125 yd Par 3. Hit 8 iron to about 1 foot and taking my Father in law golfing at a par 3 course for the first time EVER and watching him par the last hole. Next year it will be breaking 100!

1. Broke 80 for the first and only time (79 on 6200+ yards par 72 course with 120 rating).

2. Cracked 12 HI for the first and only time albeit only for a month.

3. Joined a decent golf club.

4. Established an official handicap.

Need to add one more which just happened.

5. Had 3 birdies in a span of 4 holes.  Never had 3 birdies in a round before.

I had 3 birds in 5 holes this summer - it's great when things start to click like that.    Even better for me was 5 straight par's one time this fall.      Must be what the pro's feel like ... most every day !

When 3 birds happen in 4 - 5 holes, don't you suddenly get a vision of breaking 80?   Feel like you can join web.com tour?   But the vision was very, Very, VERY fleeting for me.

Kind of boring when you get 5 pars in a row, don't you think?    Drive, GIR, 2 putts, drive GIR, 2 putts, ....    I had 4 straight pars a few times and it was "boring" nice, like my wife's drives (always on fairway, short but safe - really boring.   The only time she will vary it is when it's car path only.   She will hit near car path side to avoid walking).

I haven't had a great year all in all, but there have been plenty of highlights. Top of the list was that I made my first ever eagles this year. First was on a 510 yard par 5. Driver, 3 wood to just short of the green, and a chip in from about 40 feet. My second was on the first hole, a 310 yard par 4 (slight dog leg over OB so it's probably only 280 to go straight at it). I drove the green and drained it from 20 feet.

6. Played my 1st ever tournament, a two round 90% handicap event.  Finished in 2nd place, to my shock.
