I know these are tough questions to answer, but I'm going to ask it anyways. I can get the new Pro v's for pretty cheap right now but can't decide which to get. I swing around 115 with driver and like last years regular pro v, but i have heard nothing but great things about the new pro v1x. My question is, are the new pro v's better than the old ones from your experience? And with a 115 ss, is the X the way to go for me? Thanks in advance

Nobody but you can answer that question for you. Start at the green and work backwards. Choose the ball that lets you score the best.

The X is the lesser spinning ball so that doesn't make sense.

To the OP, I would say it's definitely a case of personal preference.

I too heard the X was a less spinning ball...especially off the tee for more distance. i just bought some Pro V1 and love them. The other day was the first time i had real spin and seen the ball bite HARD!

One question that might help answer this is if you have a cut/slice or hook/draw. ProV1 usually will help increase that, as a ProV1x will not as much.

Thats why I play TP Reds instead of the blacks.

I'll be giving the Pro V1x a try. Haven't really done any real testing with balls. I'd like a bit more distance and a bit less spin around the greens. Currently play an older Pro V1 model which is even softer than the current one. I don't have the iron play to spin it, but when chipping it can stick an awful lot. I'll give a dozen V1x 2009 a go.

You could listen to this: http://thesandtrap.com/podcasts/golf_talk_episode_106
and read this: http://thesandtrap.com/balls/2009_pr...x_balls_review

Hope it helps.

There are so many myths around golf balls right now, especially TP Red and ProV1/Prov1x.

Many have always said use Prov1 if you do not swing under 100mph because you wont be able to compress the X. That appears to be a myth.

A couple of truths - X is a tad bit longer than the Prov1. TP Red is definitely longer than both, but doesnt spin nearly as much as either Prov1, that is true.

To me the Prov1 feels softer than the X and seems to spin more off the driver. thats about it.

I honestly have no idea why people chose PRov1 over X or vice versa.. I will say I see more people playing regular prov1 balls than prov1x and TP combined in my amateur tournaments. Why so many regular and not x? I find it strange x is not the leader..

Here are the most played balls I have seen players using so far in my tourneys this season. I'll take a stab at it..

#1- Prov1
#2- Callaway
#3- Prov1X
#4- Nike
#5- TaylorMade TP Red
#6- Bridgestone

V1x allows for more spin around the greens. Allows you to work the ball better and more effectively.

It's the other way around.

Why don't you just try a sleeve of each and see what you think?

Some actual facts based on the science and not just one person's experience...

A couple of truths - X is a tad bit longer than the Prov1.

The Pro V1x is generally longer. It also should come off with more ball speed because it's a firmer ball. But if you have some bizarre launch conditions, the V1 can be just as long or longer. It may be 5% of the time, but still.

TP Red is definitely longer than both,

Both the Pro V1x and the TP Red are just about at the absolute edge of the ODS. Neither's really longer than the other. The Black is generally considered to be a tad longer than the TP Red (again because it's firmer on the full swings).

TP Black launches higher and spins more than TP Red. Pro V1x launches higher and spins less than Pro V1. It's that bizarre setup (in the TP balls) that creates some unusual conditions in which the amount each ball spins can be reduced or increased and flip-flop with its sister ball.
but doesnt spin nearly as much as either Prov1, that is true.

Also something you can't quite say. Most tests indicate that it spins a bit more than the V1x and a bit less than the V1. The TP Black spins almost as much as the V1 on full swings (while feeling firmer and launching higher).

For partial shots, the Red tends to spin a bit more than the Black because it's a bit softer. The V1/V1x maintain the same positions, generally, in partial swings: V1 spins more.
To me the Prov1 feels softer than the X and seems to spin more off the driver. thats about it.

That's generally true on all shots. The V1x is the firmer ball of the pair.

I find it strange x is not the leader..

Could be that they either a) like the feel of the V1 (softer) or that b) they buy into that dumb myth about "you have to swing fast to maximize the V1x"

play both the V1 and the V1x and i am a pretty hard hitter. I prefer the V1x over the V1 simply because i get more control over it. Still feels very soft with the wedges, and i can spin anything back with the v1x... just my 2 cents.

I play the 1x because I like the red numbers...I can't tell the difference between the two personally, so I play with what I like to look at.

Call me crazy.

I can get the new Pro v's for pretty cheap right now but can't decide which to get.

If I could get the Pro Vs for "pretty cheap", I would be playing them. There is nothing "pretty cheap" about them so a great price would definitely make me "bite" (pun intended).

I bet you could give a ProV1 to almost all amateurs and tell them it spins more, and they would think it spins more. Give them a ProV1x and tell them it spins more, and they would think it spins more. My advice is to buy the cheapest ProV you can. They are all excellent, and there's not a lick of difference between them for our games.

For example, I found a sleeve of ProV1 392s in my garage. They have to be over 5 years old. I just played one last round. It was great. I couldn't tell any difference from the newer ProV's.
