A little surprise I haven't seen a thread on this yet. If you saw the premier last night, what did you think?

Personally, I was a little excited to see him work with a mid-capper like Romano. I thought I'd be able to get more out of the show. I thought the Barkley novelty wore off after a couple episodes last season. He was so bad there wasn't much you could come away with.

My wife and I watched the premier last night and my biggest beef is how slow the show actually moves. This was the same issue last year. Seems like the replay a lot scenes. I think there'll be some good info but you're going to have to sit through a lot of crap to get it.

I agree it was really slow-moving with no useful info yet. One thing I didn't get is Romano isn't that bad, yet Haney basically dismissed his swing and acts as if they are going to start from scratch. Is this showbiz?

I did like the part where they mentioned his issues at address and taking the club back. I hope they'll go deeper there. It looks like Ray has a decent short game.

Yeah. The show looks interesting. I like the fact that they actually talk about the mental aspect of Ray's game. I think that is really his major problem. He hit some really great shots, but when one didn't go like he wanted it to, he started getting upset and doubting himself and it made it a lot worse. I'm a psychology major and I'm really interested in sport psychology so this looks like a really good show to see what Hank has in store to get Ray thinking positively (It also helps that my name is Ray as well. haha). I think it went kind of slow as well, but I hope that was just to make sure we could get all the basic information about Ray. Hopefully they pick up the pace a little bit when they actually start working together.

Thoughts as they occur to me when I watch...

The first swing they show of his is not bad. A bit long, but not bad. Nice steady head. Passable impact position. Decent hip push.

First DTL view with the Dimarco or Demarco guy: elbows get quite a ways apart from each other, even more coming down. Club seems to flip behind him on the takeaway.

Too much semi-stand-up comedy intro stuff. Dum dee doo...

Second commercial lead-in seems to imply that Hank thinks you must over-loop it if you're ever off-plane. Why couldn't you go from under-plane to on-plane?

Hank already "has it" after four swings? We'll see. If that's the case why is he then putting data on Trackman? Where are his video cameras (if not for Hank, to show Ray)?

Back to the loop and he "must" come over the top or he'd hit behind the ball? Huh? I won't belabor this point, but it doesn't make any sense to me. I can swing as far under the plane as I want and still bottom out in front of the ball... What would Matt Kuchar say? Or the countless players (Fowler, Ryan Moore, etc.) who swing above the plane and loop back beneath or on-plane? They don't hit behind the ball because their left shoulder - like Ray's - is still ahead of the ball at impact.

I worked with what you have? OK. Oh, at least he mentioned video now. Still with the looping thing though...

"With Charles I stuck with one thing too long, and should have probably changed it up, but you learn" ?!?!? He's been teaching golf how long? Why hasn't he learned that one yet?

I'm surprised at how muddy and kind of yucky parts of Hank's range lok. But it's been a weird weather year around the whole country, so that gets a pass.

Fixes

1. Posture... I'm not sure we saw many swings of Ray where he didn't immediately swing, so seeing posture has been tough. But if it looked like Hank says, yeah, fix it.

2. Club inside... ha, look, it's the hand and elbow planes (though I don't like how the elbow plane is drawn, really - it'd miss the ball). Fixes it with a little more wrist cock, but his hands could go deeper too. They go straight back too much and that helps them to rotate the clubface open too soon.

3. Club well right at top - that's because his elbows separated, both from each other and his right elbow from his body too much. Hank's "fix" pulled his own elbow more around to the front of his chest and closer to his left elbow. There's only so much the wrists can do independent of the elbows. He's fixing the hand/wrist position, but I think the elbow position might be easier to fix to get to the same goal. FWIW, I'm working on a subtler version of this myself.

Their plane has a camera on the tail??? Is that standard these days? Weird. Oh, and one beneath the plane. Hey, I guess it makes sense, like reverse cameras in cars.

Brad, man up and make a bet without changing the rules!

Literally stand-up comedy now. Zzzzzzzzz. Golf show, please.

I think Hank was saying go over the top because he thought if Romano thought of going over the top, he would end up on plane. I agree with you, it was a bad way to go about changing the plane issue, but I can see his (flawed) logic.

I don't know when this was filmed, but that is pretty much what the range looks like every time I've been there. I have also taken 2 lessons from the staff there and managed to puck up a couple really bad habits there. And unlike any other lesson or round of golf I've had, my back hurt really bad during and after too.

A pro I know who had worked with Haney says Haney views himself as a swing messiah, not just a teacher.

i was a little surprised by haney too. ray's a decent golfer, no reason to degrade everything. i think haney has a chip on his shoulder b/c he didn't completely "fix" charles...if that's even possible. so now haney is gonna make ray pay for what charles couldn't do. but they're at two completely different levels. he's starting to come off as a egotistical prick...but his wife is hot. i just figured he was babysitting his granddaughter.

I really don't think he was degrading him at all.

I think this season is going to be interesting because Romano actually shows a lot of potential. I think he is in better shape than he lets on too.

Will I be waiting with bated breath for each new episode? No, but I will record them and watch them later. Golf channel shows are much more tolerable when you can access the fast forward feature.

Romano looks to be a good golfer--- his swing is a bit armsy without enough hip/leg drive, but not too bad. To reach his goal of breaking 80, all Hank has to do is have him work on his short game for three to four hours a day.

Agree, Haney wasn't portrayed in the best light on the show. I honestly don't think Haney spends a whole lot of time with the show's star student. His star pupils are far too busy with their professional lives to commit to swing changes and show success in a short time frame. Thus, if Romano's goal is to break 80 by the end of the show, if I were Haney, I'd just focus on the short game (after making sure Romano's clubs were fitted correctly)

I would love the Golf Channel to do a competition to win a Haney project with Golfers like the "average Joe" that we can all relate to, not a celebrity.

To reach his goal of breaking 80, all Hank has to do is have him work on his short game for three to four hours a day.

I disagree. From the clips shown, his short game appeared to be his relative strength, esp putting. Of course he can/should still improve his short game (and it appears Hank will be spending lots of time there), but the most dramatic way Ray's going to drop his scores is by limiting those shanks into the woods. IMO, the fasted route to him breaking 80 is by finding more fairways and greens.

i sincerely disagree. hank's wife is hot but not in elin's league. anyway, if she's hotter than elin, does that mean hank won't cheat on her?? how hot does a chick have to be to be "affair-proof"?
