Lee Westwood is my new hero, What a class act, I hope he wins a major soon. To be on top of the world and fall without a change in your personality is incredible. I am glad to see him contending in Majors like today at the Masters.

i definitely like and respect lee. he seems like a great guy. i was actually rooting for him to win today. but simply put, he's just not as talented as phil or tiger. they are the only two golfers who currently are head and shoulders above everyone else. when they are on, they hit shots that nobody else can, and there are no other golfers who can compete with them.

He's got a good act, but his swing is not something you'd want to copy. He didn't play all that bad yesterday, Phil won with a score one or two shots lower than predicted.

Don't get me wrong Phil played some great shots and deserved to win it, but he had some luck, when him and Westwood went in the trees on 13 he had a shot to the green and Westwood didn't.

Phil played great but Westwood took too long to get started in the final round, he did not put enough pressure on Phil and you HAVE to do that or he will step on the gas and be gone...

Whats with the comparison to tiger? In case you didnt notice, Lee beat tiger. Lee played like a winner, he deserved to win, but so did Phil.

The golf gods had Phil in mind, you just dont get two eagles in a row otherwise.

I wouldnt really want to copy phils swing, either..lol. Its amazing how many great players have "faults" in their swings that we as ametuers are told to never do.

Eric,

I watch Westwood's swing a lot and he definitly has some aspects of the S&T; going on...wouldn't you say?

Much less than most other Tour players, actually. He's an over-the-top fader with a lousy (compared to his peers) impact position (see the picture you quoted) and a surprising lack of hip push forward.

EVERY good player has a good portion of the S&T; principles because the S&T; principles aren't off-the-wall crazy stuff. They're just solid geometry. But Lee's geometry breaks down in critical areas compared to S&T.; That's not an indictment of S&T; or Lee Westwood. I tend to think he'd get better if he didn't look like that at impact, but he manages to repeat it well, so he plays well.

Agreed in the true sense of the S&T; method overall but as we have discussed on another post, many pro's use parts of the S&T...to; my eye (new to the S&T;) his address and backswing look very familiar to the S&T; positions as his weight appears to stay on his left side for the most part...although it is probably not technically exactly like the S&T; as I have more to learn about this method which I LOVE!

is it just my eye or does he pull the ball a lot?

he swings out and across the ball, so he would natually pull a few if he doesnt rotate good going back.

Pulls and pull fades, yes.

I'd rather watch a guy go up in flames than smoulder for 3 hours then flare up for 2 minutes - a little spritz of water and zzzzzt. Gone.

I guess if Mickelson had lost I'd think Lee had the better day - "smart" plays all around the course. I actually really like the guy, but he seemed resigned to settle for second place - he didn't have that extra gear to keep up with lefty.

I was impressed with Kim who just ran out of holes.

So every guy who ever finished a tournamnet higher than Tiger is more talented than Tiger? IMO, the only guy with truly as much 'talent' as Tiger - and I define 'talent' as the reputation to make you EXPECT him to hit a great shot, and for that person to subsequently EXECUTE that great shot - is Phil, so I agree with seniorchipotle. However, Phil seems to rely on great shots a lot of times, when they don't come, he struggles, misses cuts, finishes 73rd. When Tiger doesn't hit great shot, he grinds, he scrambles, he claws, and is seemingly never out of the top 10, regardless of his game. Beyond those two, and even Phil is a distant second, in a sea of professional golfers who are all immensely skilled and capable of playing great golf, no one has a similar true talent level.

Whats with the comparison to tiger? In case you didnt notice, Lee beat tiger. Lee played like a winner, he deserved to win, but so did Phil.

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

I disagree - sort of. Having a playing style that fits the course is luck, but being able to adjust that style, and simply grinding are talents.

Other than the "talents" I mentioned above and of course, the flatstick, there are plenty of golfers with talent levels approaching Tiger and Phil. Hell, even Phil didn't have Phil's talent last year.

I kind of hear you but I am not sure I totally agree...I am not sure talent is the lone separator...I am thinking maybe it is a confidence or courage thing???

I don't know about anyone else’s perspective but every golf tournament that I have attended and spent time at the driving range, the chipping area or the putting green I am always bewildered why more of these guys don't win every week. They all hit the ball so solid and when not on the golf course itself they make virtually every putt they look at...I think it comes down to being confident (or cocky) enough to believe you can do this and also have the courage to grind for it...just my 2 cents!!!
