How often do you guys check your loft and lie angles for your irons? Spent $30 bucks at Golf Galaxy a couple of weeks ago to have them checked. I was completely surprised that my set was all over the place. Lie angles were anywhere from standard to 3* flat. Lofts were a couple degrees to a club weak. Had them all reset to 2* flat, and standard lies, and I had noticeable ball-striking improvement this week (not to mention distance gain). Highly recommended if you play often, but neglected your regular check-ups.

I really need to get mine done. When I had my RAC MBs a few years ago, I got it done every season. I've had my MP57's for almost 2 seasons and I haven't gotten it done at all. Ralph Maltby states that a lie angle that is off by even 1* can cause a PW to be as much as 20 feet off target.

Based on my current frequency, apparently I'm getting them done every 15 seasons, whether they need it or not!

Looking at the divots of your irons can also indicate whether or not the lie is off..

I have played forged clubs for 30 years and owned a loft and lie machine as a hobbiest clubmaker for a good part of those years. What I have found is that loft and lie changes very little for the weekend player who does not abuse his clubs. For the the guy who is a practice nut, and pounds alot of balls?...... he might want to check them once in a while. The milder the steel..... the more they can change.

Metal has grain and memory. If a stock set of irons are bent to a players preference...... they will over time try to resume their original pattern. Some clubs more than others in any given set. In this case...... they should be checked every now and then.

Be carefull about bringing your clubs to the big box retailers for repairs. Depending who is working..... gets the work, and some of them have no biz touching a loft and lie machine.

  • 1 year later...

I took my Mizuno MP-52s in for a spring check-up and was somewhat shocked to learn how much they had moved in the two years since I bought them. Lofts averaged three degrees weaker than original specs, and lies averages FIVE degrees flatter than standard! I though the club maker must have lost his mind, but he's a reputable fellow. I took them to the range, and they felt great. Looking forward to seeing how they play on the course.

Never even considered it. I have Ping G10s with the red dot. I'm assuming they're correct.

Hmm... This is something I've never even thought about doing. I've played hard cast clubs for years, and only picked up my CB1s last year. Didn't realize they could bend that much so quick.

Those artificial turf mats bend them faster.

Generally do it twice a year while I'm regripping. Might as well.

That's a lot of regripping.

I just had my clubs checked.  I've been playing the same KZG forged irons for 12 years.   They're made with a relatively soft 1030 carbon steel.   3 of the irons were off on the lie by 1 degree....that's it.

I was actually quite surprised and pleased.

If you hit off any mats and grass with regularity, check your divots and flight pattern carefully, and get to a calibrated loft/lie machine at least once a year, more if you play and practice a lot. I should add, the more you hit off mats, the more frequent the check.

Two reasons that I limit my club choices on the range -- 1. don't want to scratch club face with the rocks I hit for range balls, and 2. I practice and warmup on matts and hardpan often and don't want to bend all my clubs.

I limit most range work to my GW, 8-I, 6-I and woods.

Whenever you buy clubs they should be checked and adjusted as a condition of the sale. I have never seen a set spec correctly out of the box. I have mine checked every 12-18 months after that.

Play year round. Use the clubs every day. Hot enough to have sweaty hands even in the winter. Grips get pretty skanky in six months.
