Same damn thing -- chest wall muscle strain/tear -- but on the other side this time. Was well warmed-up and hitting irons on the range. Took a normal cut, felt a familiar tweak and knew right then that I was done with full swings for a good while. Last time it took me seven weeks to rehab. No idea why I'm so susceptible to this particular injury, but lots of putting practice in prospect, I guess.

(And for you gear hos, here's the truly tragic bit, I was going to get fitted for some MP-53s the next day. Take those off the list Santa.)

Maybe you should go to a pro/phisio to get your swing checked out?
I don't know how you'd damage your intercostal muscles from a golf swing.

I did some research last time around and it turns out it's quite a common problem in rotational sports like golf, baseball, tennis etc. Bummer is that it's really hard not to keep aggravating the strain once you have it, even if you stop playing golf. Pick something up, ow. Roll over in bed, ow. Turn your head to back up in the car, ow. As a result, the ill effects tend to linger much longer than you'd expect for what feels like a pretty minor injury. On the other hand, it's quite possible there's something in my swing/physiology that makes me particularly prone to these. Maybe I'm just getting old.

Sorry to hear. I had a nasty chest muscle strain a few years ago. One of the exercises that really helped me was a regimen of different types of push-ups. Of course I couldn't begin those until after the proper healing time, but my doctor told me when I could do a certain amount/week without pain, then I could get back to golf. Everyone is different, and I don't know if it would pertain to your situation, but my point is to make sure you use your chest muscles in every possible way during rehab to make sure you have successfully gotten through it.

Do you happen to practice on mat? my local range has mats and for some reason the last month my right wrist feels strained/sprained. i was thinking maybe its the shock from no give/divot in the mat. i can really feel it when i rotate my wrist like in impact to release position. it might have been triggered by a bad grip that i noticed i fell into. i think i should shut it down for a month and just putt.

I am forming a theory about physiotherapy. The prettier the practitioner is and the nicer she seems, the more she is going to hurt you!

But it was worth it. Diagnosis of primary injury in the serratus anterior, which connect the shoulder blades to the ribs. The muscle was in spasm and needed to be released, which is the painful bit. Already feels way better now, though. She also pegged why I probably keep getting these injuries -- apparently I'm unusually inflexible in the costovertebral joints where the ribs meet the spine. Not sure there's anything to be done about that but, hey, the more you know...

Sorry to hear about your injury, I had a similar episode 2006-2007, ended up buying some older used clubs (esp driver) with softer flex, and totally altered my swing to be able to play (with consent from my doctors). I did it mostly on my own, as I was the only one aware of the pain barrier. After that I've developed a killer shot with my irons with a very short swing. Although that period was difficult I believe I came from it a better golfer, with some new shots in the bag. It took me the better part of 2008-2009 to re-program my full swing again, again frustrating but very rewarding. I look back on that time and wonder why I didn't practice more putting, should have though as it is sometimes hurting my rounds.

Hope you regain your flexibility and strength and can get going for those Mizunos :)

  • 2 weeks later...
File under fffffffffffuuuuuuuuu!

Was back to about 95% at the end of this week. Then went to daughter's last ballet class of the year. Once it finished, she comes running over for a hug, trips and goes headlong. I lunge to catch her, the weight hits my outstretched arms, and bam it's all ••••ed again. Stupid parental instincts.

Yeah, no kidding. Better to let her fall on her face anyway. That'll teach her not to accidentally trip again. Stupid kids.

After several days with no obvious pain or restriction, I went out on the course to very carefully test things out. It did not go at all well. Sitting here right now with an ice pack under each arm -- chilling, as it were. Ha ha. Whee.

Kids are incredibly bouncy. Sure, they whine a bit, but they're generally good people. Whenever I've been injured, I put the club away completely. Don't want to develop any bad swing habits (due to compensating for the pain) or extend the time on the DL.

A close second: comedy... this is just hilarious... usually I find at least 4-5 posts per week that just crack me up. Back to the topic now... I hope that injury heals up soon Stretch... go with what Miller said; take it easy 'til your back to 100%; don't want to mess up the swing with compensations.

Funny, but I'm guessing Eric is not a Dad yet. Just wait. You'll find yourself catching their puke to protect the furniture!!!

Stretch,

Ask your therapist about pool therapy, including warm pool. My mother is a physiotherapist who specializes in pool therapy. It does an incredible job at repairing injured parts with less loading than you get with gravity exercises or weights. It also increases flexibility faster due to the heat.

Best of luck.
