For those with extra wedges ... what clubs do you eliminate ?

This came up on a different thread ... as we're all limited to 14 clubs, I'd be curious what clubs you eliminate if you decide to carry 4 or 5 wedges ?        Assume we all carry a driver, putter and at least 4-9 irons - just doesn't seem to be much wiggle room if you want to carry a hybrid or two & fairway woods.      Just curious ...

Throw out any wood or iron that you cannot hit consistently off the grass. That probably means any wood under 17* and iron under 25* If you cannot get your current 3 wood or 4 iron airborne, get rid of it. See my signature for what I use.(3 wood is 16*)

I'm not in this situation, but if I were, this would be my set up:

Driver

3 Wood

2 Hybrid

4-PW

52

56

60

If you switch the 52-56-60 for a 54-58, that is my set-up. It allows for a 3 iron to limit the gap between the hybrid (210 club) and the 4 iron (185 club). In all honesty, I don't think anyone games 5 wedges. I can't imagine replacing a 19* hybrid for a 64 wedge.

I'm currently playing the following:

8.5* Driver

16* Hybrid (2 Iron)

3 - PW Iron Set

52, 56, 60 Wedges

For now, and most courses I play this setup works well.  I've thought about losing a wedge and adding a strong 3-wood, but really can't be spending too much on golf with a wife in med school.

I can still hit my 3 iron reliably from the turf and the tee, and the 2-Hybrid fills the 250 yard shot off the tee well.

Once our finances change, I'll likely move to a 4-PW iron set, 2 wedges and 2 hybrid and strong a 3 wood.

I carry this setup too.

What is your gap between your 3w and 2h?

Some recent clubs are anchoring the loft of the PW, and spreading out the lofts of other clubs as they go toward the longer irons. Basically, this year's 4i has about the same loft as 3i heads of a couple of years ago. This allows a person to go with 4-PW - just seven clubs - and add a fourth wedge.. or a hybrid. (Also, 19º was loft of strong 2i about 15 years ago)

Will the higher bounce in 4i and 3i heads, plus the availability of flighted shafts, cause long(er) irons to become more user-friendly for mid HDCP players? (Bounce not available for TMs)  Any ideas?

Also, most OEMs offer at least one model of irons where you can swap out the 3i and 4i (and sometimes 5i) for matching hybrids, or possibly iron replacement clubs. So, you can get blending rather than either/or.

I had used a 4 wedge setup before, PW48-52-56-60, and I had one less fairway wood. No problem, but now I use a PW48-54-60 setup, and that gives me an extra strong 3 wood, which is basically like an extra driver. I'm lovin it too, because my fairway percentage off the tee is extremely better (I play short, tight courses and I'm using my 3 wood a lot), and as for my wedges, I fill the gaps with different swings and a few tweaks of the lofts to get it right.

What club to eliminate? I would remove a fairway wood or hybrid in a heartbeat if it overlaps with any other club. I space my long clubs out and fade or draw to fill the gaps. Thats is, I try to fade or draw...

I'm also a fan of four wedge setups, but I wouldn't go 5. Just open the face of the lob wedge.

For me you assume wrong.  I haven't carried a 4I for years.  I have the putter and driver, 3W, 2 hybrids (22 and 25 degree), 5I-GW, and a 54 and 56 SW for a total of 14 clubs.  I could probably drop the 5I and rarely miss it.

i play 4 wedges. when i got the AP1s they came with a 50 gap, and i already had the 52 and 56 that matched with my previous set. bent them to create all 4* gaps. on top end i play 10.5, 15.5, to 19h which gaps perfectly into my 4 iron

I broke my 4-iron a few months back which freed up some space. It was my intention to replace it, but I've been surprised how few times I've genuinely missed it. It's allowed me to carry an extra wedge, which I'm using a lot more than the 4-iron.

    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
