This week it has been surprisingly warm in northeast Ohio and I've been working on my game. I have been taking lessons with this guy that videotapes my swing and helps me get my swing back to perfection for the past 3 weeks and I can tell my swing has really improved. My buddy's family owns a golf course up here (Skyland Pines) and they have a heated range. We went up there on Tuesday when it was about 40 degrees out and it was great! My swing has really revolutionized since last fall after only 3 weeks. Today it is 55 degrees and it will be my first round of 2011 with the new swing and I am kind of nervous but at the same time I am really excited. I guess I am going to go at it like I am playing in mid-summer. It will end up being a lot of fun and a lot of mulligans but still productive. I've waited for this day all winter!

I was just wondering how everyone elses first round of 2011 (or any other year) went. Or how much you improved from your first round to your last and what kind of impression does your first round make on the rest of the year.

Great thread!

My course opened yesterday afternoon.  I got up today, went for a run, stretched and showed up at 9 am with a mug of coffee to find a frost delay and 5 groups waiting :(  Talk about a bummer.

Heading back at 3:00pm after an afternoon meeting.  Hitting range balls earlier in the week felt awesome, I can't wait to get out and play!

Hm, I just missed this thread. I wrote it up here. In short: good wedge work and improved ball striking, but bad putting and bad driving. A perfect indication of what I've been working on since November.

I suppose I played nine holes in Arizona the day after a two-day golf school. I think I shot +2 putting with a face-on putter I was trying out (research). Might have been E without it, I don't know.

First nine of the year was great. I've been working hard in the off season. I shot a +4 40 with a really dumb double bogie on a par five. 5 of 7 FW and 5 of 9 GIR. Scrambling and wedges were good. Putting was good as well. I made a couple of 8-10 footers for par, but I left 2 birdies one ball short on the bumpy slow greens. This sets the stage for a plummet in my index!!

Was able to squeeze in a quick 9 after a few afternoon meetings today.  It was 55 and sunny in Omaha, absolutely a beautiful afternoon.

I struggled with a few short putts, but hit 7/7 fairways and 7/9 greens.  I had a few bad pitches and lots of putts that didn't fall, but a 15' putt fell on #9 for eagle to close with a 36.  Can't believe golf season has hit in mid-february (for now).

Cheers to a great 2011!

A very disappointing 78 at compass pointe in Pasadena MD. I started off with a birdie but I just couldn't get anything going for the other 17 holes. I was surprised because I didn't hit the ball bad but it was the worst putting round I've had in years.

I thought low 70's was unusual for Mississippi for this time of year, but PA? That is crazy.

I played a handful of times in January but the weather was wet and cold. So our group played scrambles just to make it fun. My first full round for HC purposes was 76, but my next was 82.

My first round out was a 93 , that was after a 3 hour range session where I hit 3 extra large buckets of balls.  I went out the next day, (VERY SORE) and shot a lousy 103.  UGGH.  Even though I didn't score well I hit a few beautiful shots and my iron play is really getting better.  The greens at this course are in very poor conditions and a two putt was the most I could ever hope for.  Brand new driver also and I was spaying it a tad.  Think I've got it down now though.  We'll see.

After all that build up I didn't get to play a full round of golf. I had things going on after school so i couldn't get out to the course till 6 which is about an hour before it gets dark this time of year. Also since the sun was setting, the warm temperatures of the earlier day had totally decreased to around 35 degrees. So me and my buddy only got 2 holes in and they were just alright. The course wasn't even open but the owner said if we were crazy enough to play in these conditions, then just go play for free. It felt really good to feel the ball come off the driver and watch the ball travel down the fairway with a high draw on my first swing. Hitting the ball on a real course is way different then hitting into a net for so long. I ended up bogeying that hole but i wasn't worried about my score. The second hole I hit a low drive that landed in the fairway but short. I hit my hybrid better than I have ever hit it. Landed just left of the green and I had a short chip over a small pond and and chunked it into the middle of the water. I was confident I could get my Taylormade Penta over the hazard but it landed right in the middle. Luckily the pond was still a little frozen so I carefully walked into the middle of the pond and hit the ball off the ice landing 10 feet from the man-made cup. Overall it was a fun 2 holes but I'm still looking forward to my first round of 2011!

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
