And that’s the killer instinct, he's to nice of a guy. Now don’t get me wrong Rory is going to win but nothing like Tiger did a few years ago. Example, match play when Rory was so hyped up in the semi to play Lee Westwood that when he got to the finals he had nothing left for Hunter Mahan. Phil Mickelson or Tiger would have used the semi win to get pumped for the next 18 holes. Let’s see what happens next week.

Amazing what people come up with, isn't it?

Too much time on their hands, I suppose.

The guy that won the US Open last year by eight shots at a record breaking -16 has no killer instinct????

And I know this is a "woulda coulda shoulda" argument but that playoff with Mahan was starting to really turn into Rory's match but a litle late and he ran out of holes. Pretty sure if there had been 3-4 more holes he would have overtook Mahan as he was really starting to settle into a groove. Chip in for Eagle! Ohh, baby!

Hard to draw any conclusions about a 22-year old. Especially one that blew the Masters last year & used that experience to obliterate the field in the US Open...some people would call that a 'killer instinct'.

People like me.

Yeah, I was just thinking how much he lacks as he was winning all those tournaments:

If he wasn't such a nice guy, he wouldn't have shot 80 on purpose so Tiger and Charl would have a chance at the Masters, or incurred the 2 stroke penalty in Dubai so Mr Rock could taste some glory. And he hurt himself on the tree root at the PGA on purpose so he wouldn't monopolize the majors that year.

He doesn't care, he's just out there to have fun. That's why he let Luke have #1 back after a week; a week's enough for Mcilroy. No fire there. Hell, he could won that game of tennis if he really wanted, he just really didn't want to embarrass his opponent.

Seriously, Rory is a competitor. He's in control of his emotions and stays cool; that's why he seems passive. It makes his opponents more intimidated than being like Tiger. And he probably is a nice guy, just don't mistake that for being happy with 2nd place.

Your conclusion is correct.  Rory isn't going to win 25 tournaments and 5 more majors in the next three years.

However, I think we all agree your supporting reason isn't why.  This kid wants to win, and he wants to win big.  I think his youth has made him flappable and inconsistent on Sunday when it counts, but he will tighten that up with experience.  If you question his will to win, look at how he bounced back from his major upsets.  After throwing away the Masters on the last nine last year, he came back at the US Open and obliterated the field.  After tanking his chance to seize #1 this year at the World Match Play, he came back at the Honda and won convincingly.

Amazing? Isn't it? Yes it is. I’m just giving my observation , right or wrong I think I’m like most people on any forum. So if you think I have too much time on my hands you better look at yourself before criticizing someone else. Too much time on my hands? How many hours a day do you spend on this site giving your amazing insight?

It wasn't all that convincing. Convincing would have involved stretching the lead, not merely hanging on or outlasting his opponent. Rory should win more. Luke should win more. I think this season is shaping up to be a duel for #1 and maybe they will win more often. Looking forward to it.

But what is your "observation"?

What you said about the matchplay is just pure invention.

You wrote:

What is that supposed to mean? Why do you say that? You don't know what was going on. He lost a match. The final. But you seem to have some insight that noone else has. And look at the example you use!!! Mickelson. The absolutely PERFECT example of the nice guy.The antithesis of Woods. The guy who has no "killer instinct", but only 40 PGA Tour titles.

Do you think Mickelson, Els, Goosen, Furyk, Johnson, Watson, Daly, Kenny Perry, or any one of a thousand other golfers you could name has a "killer instinct" as you put it?

They're pretty much all nice guys. Woods is clearly different. That doesn't make McIlroy flawed.

He is, in all probability, the player most likely to be number one when Woods is finished, if not before, (I don't mean OWGR) and here you are saying he has something missing. You must not have heard his interviews after and before round 4 of the U.S. Open last year. Some people even called him arrogant, because he said he wanted to do what you claim he can't do.

What is he, 22 years old?

But I don't just make up things that can be proven to be untrue with three minutes of reading or one minute of thinking.

In his first post, this guy just comes up with a ludicrous proposition and then gets shirty when this is pointed out.

I agree that the topic is weak and poorly written, but give the guy a break. He's new to the forum.

Back on topic, I think Rory has all the killer instinct needed to be one of the greatest golfers of all time (6 majors or more).

By this model, everyone not sleeping around with girls left and right, winning 50% of the events they start and 10+ majors will be missing the killing instinct. Tiger is a phenom we might not see again. I don't see the point in trying to compare everyone to him. Sure, Rory is the best of the young guys right now. How do you define this killer instict he's supposedly missing? By whether he win a match play tournament or not? Every player is different and they all try to do their best out there. Fact is that Tiger's far more talented than everyone out there, so he will seem to want it more simply because he actually wins more.

An abstract thought just came to me - maybe Hunter Mahan wanted to win the match play too?!?!? What the . . . ?

Nah - Rory just had nothing left. The match was over the night before. It was handed to Mahan.

McIlroy is a pansy with no stomach for a fight.

It was just more evidence to throw on the fire of McIlroy's pathetic career up to date.

Losers like him are keel hauled in the marines.

I think that the OPsters point is that what made Tiger great was his ego, self-centeredness, and drive. It could cause him at times to be rude, overly aggressive, and impersonal. Rory does not have those traits. He is very friendly, and personable.

BUT, that does not mean that Rory cannot be as great as Tiger. Was Jack the same as Tiger? No, yet he found his way to 18 majors and one hell of a career. I think you don't need to act like Tiger to win and to be great. Jack and Rory are perfect examples of that. I truly hope that people don't teach their kids they have to act like Tiger to be great. It is not a prerequisite.

Wow my second posting and I get hammered for making an observation. OK maybe I was wrong but you could have explained your thoughts a little better rather than posting your sarcastic comment. Thank you for the great welcome. And your what? A Forum Leader?

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
