In fall of 2014 my dad surprised me by taking me to the airport and flying us to Pinehurst! We played courses No. 2 & 8 along with Tobacco Road the day we got in. This summer my friend and I were planning on flying down to NC for some golf. Has anyone played any Pinehurst courses besides 2 and 8? Do you have to stay on resort? How expensive? Please reply if you have info!!

I think 2 is close a grand to play, you have to stay at the Carolina hotel and get a caddy. 4 and 6 are also suppose to be pretty good. 7 and 9 are the private courses but the public can play them. I recently played 9 and liked it, some great looking holes.

How much did it cost to play 9? And did you have to stay on resort?

I own a condo at the nearby Talamore Golf Resort.  I know that golfers staying at Talamore can book several of the Pinehurst courses, but not all.  I'm pretty sure that to book #2, you need to stay at the Pinehurst Resort, or possible at the Pinecrest Inn.  I've played all of the Pinehurst courses except #7.  My favorites are 2, 4, and 8.  3 is the shortest, but has a lot of the original Donald Ross design remaining.  9 has recently been acquired, and is excellent too, a nice Jack Nicklaus design.

There's a lot of great golf in the area outside of the Pinehurst Resort courses.  For more Donald Ross designs, look at Pine Needles, MidPines, and the very reasonably priced Southern Pines GC.  MidSouth is an excellent Arnold Palmer design, the sister course to Talamore, which is itself a very solid course.  You might want to explore costs by talking to both the Pinehurst resort, to price out a package, and to some of the non-Pinehurst packagers, such as the Talamore folks.

Feel free to keep in touch with me, I visit the area a couple times a year, and can recommend some of my favorite bars and restaurants if you decide to go.  There's another TST member who lives at Talamore that may chime in as well.

How much was it to play at Pinehurst 4? And I'll be staying with my uncle off resort so could I still play there?

To be honest, I don't remember.  I played #4 as a guest of a member, so you'll almost certainly pay more as an "off-the street" player, assuming you can get on.  The following is from the www.pinehurst.com FAQ page:

Can I make a tee time at Pinehurst Resort without staying overnight?
Pinehurst reserves advance tee times for members and resort guests. If you wish to play one of our courses and are not a resort guest, you may call Social Sales at (855) 835-0771, opt 5, beginning five days out from date of play, for all courses except No. 2. For course No. 2, please call  the main golf shop for tee times and rates beginning 24 hours in advance of your play date at (910) 235-8141.

I can't find any mention of the cost to play any of the courses.  Bear in mind that the summer is a somewhat lower-demand season, so that you'll probably be able to find good golf with very little notice.

I played with a member and just paid the guest fee.

Same policy as at Pebble Beach. I played their big 3 last week and didn't stay at the resort. I actually scheduled Pebble the day of; not as many people eager to pay $495/round as I thought.

I went years ago in 2000.   I stayed there, and I would highly recommend staying there.   It's a very nice resort.

All the courses are recommended.   But they all have different characters.

#1 is a shorter, older course that is perfect for a leisurely afternoon.

#2, #4 and #8 are the most prestigious that they have.

#7 is completely different from all of them.  Completely different feel and character.

#3 is also older, but more like a normal golf course.

I can't remember if #5 or #6 was the one in the woods, but that one was kind of different as well.   Very nice though.

I played 1-8, with 36 in a day and they structured it so that I played what was considered the more prestigious, premiere course in the morning and then had an easier time in the afternoon.   When I went, there was only 8 courses.   The Nicklaus one is new since then.

The resort is very old school.   Great for a relaxing time.

#5 is a good course running out from the main clubhouse, predominantly between #1 and #3.  #6 is "off-campus".  I agree that staying at the resort is great, and I'd actually choose the Holly Inn over the Carolina, I just like the smaller, more intimate feel of the building.  However, from my memory many of the golf packages include dinner every night, as well as breakfast in the morning.  As good as the food is at the Pinehurst dining rooms, there are LOTS of really good restaurants in the area.  If its me, I'd pick a package without dinner, and check out the neighboring restaurants.

To Dave, I've heard from many players that #4 is their favorite course. The current walk on rate for #4 is $240. Would you agree? Planning another trip down there soon.

For me, #2 is the best, based on the history as well as the quality of the golf challenge.  #4 is the most interesting, visually.  When the course was rebuilt, Tom Fazio installed clusters of very small pot bunkers, and severely crowned greens, perhaps more severe than on #2

I hope this link to Google Maps gives you a good view of some of these clusters.  I'd put #4 and #8 about even in my personal enjoyment.  On the other hand, you could play some really excellent courses in that area without spending $240.

Yes I saw your post about other Donald Ross courses in the area and I'm certainly going to check those out as well, but I'm honest enough with myself to know another trip to Pinehurst is in store, but to be honest, my desire to play the restored #2 is minimal, except for the historic aspects of competitive golf. Thanks for the help Dave!

played #2 the week after Easter, we stopped at the clubhouse on our way back from Dormie Club. on a flyer stopped at proshop and asked if they had an opening for the next day. They sent us off #10 at 805am on a friday morning for 400.00 plus the caddie. they didn't ask where we were staying. If you don't mind the cost #2 is a great walk...we actually skipped a round at TR to play #2 and felt pretty good about it.

Honestly the best course for value IMO is Pine Needles, we played there for 140 I believe and did a replay for 60 more. basically 200 bucks give or take a little and played 36. great golf course and great value.

#9 the old National course if a favorite of mine as well.

Driver- Callaway Razor somthing or other
3W- Taylor Made R11S
3H Rocketballz
4I-PW- MP-59
Gap- Vokey 54

Lob- Cleveland 60

Putter- Rife

Skycaddie SG5

Gosh, walk on a-la-carte rates are insane!! But I am sure well worth.

Playing a mix of top tier + second tier, (except #2) -  #4, 7, 8, 9 from 06/07-06/10 + staying at the Manor for total of well inside of a grand. We might try to do an afternoon round at one of the others, maybe #6.
