Establishing your yardage numbers

Does anyone have a good technique (and any relevant tips) for establishing club yardages?

Just got some new sticks, and I need to start swinging with some real knowledge about my distances.

I have a new Bushnell laser finder. My club's range is downhill, but I plan on doing some work at another (flatter) range to get my numbers.

Thanks for the shouts

Check this out: http://thesandtrap.com/t/77861/how-to-hit-partial-wedge-shots-learn-your-tweener-yardages. Very helpful for the short irons. As a matter of fact, I did the 10 ball drill that Erik mentions this past Saturday. You definitely want to laser those range flags for the most accurate distances. Then, on a fairly empty range day (when your not competing withs tons of other golfers), hopefully the range will be freshly cleaned of range balls and you've got a shot at lasering a ball or 2...although I'm not sure if that will work.

You might want to check if there is anywhere that you can get on a FlightScope or TrackMan.

I have an ES12 portable launch monitor. Amazon.com has them at a good price. Much cheaper than a Trackman and yardage readings is within 2 yards of a trackman. It matches the yardages on the GC2 and at TopGolf perfectly (carry distances). Please YouTube the ES12. It is very portable, fits in my golf bag, and you can use it on the golf course during practice rounds. Very quick to just turn it on, toggle to which club you are hitting set it down, hit your shot, and it will show you your carry distance, or speak your distance to you if you take advantage of blue tooth. Good Luck

Get on the course when it is empty, on a nice day when with no to little wind and drop 10 balls at the 150 marker, laser or GPS verified. Pull out the club you think goes 150 and just hit 10 shots with the swing you'd do 90% of the time. Basically if you had 150 from the fairway to a center pin location on a nice day, what would you hit.

Measure off how far each one went. Then I would disregard 2 outliers (maybe one was toe'd and ended up 15 yards short).

From there most clubs are designed for 10-12 yards gaps. You could go back 12 yards and hit the next club up and see how they land. A good estimate is 10-12 yard gaps between clubs. Usually a bit more in the wedge area, maybe 13-14 yards.

I wouldn't trust range balls. They are cheaply made and not consistent at all.

There are some club distance charts online that are pretty accurate (accurate enough).  If you know your driver swing speed or know for sure how far you hit a couple clubs... it will fill in the blanks for you.

I think there is a golf club "calculator" online too, but I didn't find it as accurate.

I'd also use real golf balls. Some of those range balls can be generous.

Generous - as in go farther than regular balls? With every club of yours or mostly driver? My understanding of range balls says they are typically stingy (3%-15% less) vs. regular balls.

If not the case for you, you may hit down on the ball more than optimal so the lower-spin range balls would go farther than your on-course shots.

I think @saevel25 had a great suggestion of measuring on the course. In addition to this you really only need to carefully measure the 3 scoring irons and your wedges. You can then use the club distance calculator to estimate the rest. For instance, I know my full swing PW, 9i, 8i and 60 and 52 degree distances pretty well.

Driver is not a great indicator of your distance and any swing speed you get on a monitor is a controlled environment which does not accurately reflect actual playing conditions very well.

I'd also use real golf balls. Some of those range balls can be generous.

What kind of range balls do you have at your club? Must be nice! On the other side of the coin, what kind of play balls do you use? I would switch to your range balls. . .

Get on the course when it is empty, on a nice day when with no to little wind and drop 10 balls at the 150 marker, laser or GPS verified. This is exactly what I do, it works best. My problem is that as of late I've been partnered every time out. Hardly any time to do anything except play golf.

I'm not sure if this post is sarcastic, but I'd say it's the exact opposite. Although range balls are usually rock like distance balls, they are also usually smashed beyond repair and quite dead. The yardages I get on the range are quite a bit shorter than I get with a "real" golf ball.

With just the right amount of wear a range ball can give you the occasional "flyer lie" type of launch conditions with a shorter. But the range I go to just stocked up on all new Srixon range balls

Lol. sure...no problem.

Obviously written by someone in Ohio. :-P

Only time I can get on the course around NYC when it's empty is during a snowstorm. And even then I won't be alone!

Hmm.... true. It's with my irons. And I tend not to have that high ball flight. I have more of a lowish-Mid launch with them, and the distance is still pretty normal for my club head speed. This might explain the pounding my shoulders take at the range on the mats. I'm tall, so I'm coming down pretty steep.

Also my range uses Srixon. I play Callaway Hex Chromes (still have some)

I was hitting my 7 iron about 155 at the range and 145 at the course carry distances.

What's wrong with the range? that's all I need.

That being said it does take a little experience to learn the variables on the course, but for the most part the range flags are all I've ever needed.

Most ranges around me use a mix of range balls and recycled real balls I assume they find on the course, so you can generally find half a dozen or more NXT Tour or ProV1 balls to use as a standard to work off of and calibrate how far the range balls go in comparison, if any difference. I don't find much of a difference in flight distance unless I'm hitting my woods, and at that point the differences are counteracted by the fact that I'm not spotting a 10 yard difference at 225+ yards over level ground anyway.

Well its frequently best to club up on the course, at least that's been my experience, so the variable of good balls going further than range balls is nulled, just hit the club that you do at the range and you're clubbed up!

Not positive, but it sounds like the higher quality (softer & better dimples) ball is ballooning on the course.
