I can just shake my head at a lot of these.

At least the last guy got the pop-up right with it being to much of a downward strike with a driver.

Quick Swing Fix sounds like an oxymoron to me.  Unless that player's problem is that he is holding the wrong end of the cub, that is.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Yikes. This one seems to be the worst:
Launching one straight right often feels powerful because you're hitting with a square clubface, but you're still heading to the right trees to search for it. The issue with a push -- a shot that starts right and stays on that line -- is that the club comes into impact too far from the inside; you're swinging too in to out.
Uh, isn't a push because of an open clubface? Or do I not understand the "new" ball flight laws?

Square to what, target line or swing path? :-D

I assume they meant square to the target, because that's how magazines like that define a square club face.

The Tips:

  1. Slice? Roll your left wrist.
  2. Hook? Hit the inside part of the ball.
  3. Push? Take a dramatically closed stance.
  4. Pull? Keep the right shoulder back.
  5. Top? Left hip over left knee, chest pointing at ball.
  6. Toe hit? Miss a ball toward the heel.
  7. Heel hit? Swing left.
  8. Fat? Move body and low point forward more.
  9. Thin? Rotate your head through impact.
  10. Whiff? Hit a penny in front of your ball.
  11. Shank? Your grip is weak.
  12. Drop-Kick? Improve weight shift.
  13. Pop-up? Secondary axis tilt.

Quote:
Minnesota fats probably never hit a pool ball left of his target. Know why? He knew that to keep the ball from going left, he had to avoid hitting the right side of the ball.

The tip then goes on to say that to hook the ball you have to hit the outside of the golf ball. That is, as we all know, untrue (most will define the outside of the ball as outside the target line).

Quote:
Dana Rader , the shank comes from having a weak grip, which leaves the face wide open at impact and exposes the hosel. (A weak grip means your hands are turned too far toward the target on the grip.) "I've never been able to fix a shank without strengthening the grip," Rader says. "It helps square the face at impact."

Uhhhh…

Some of the tips are okay (but may or may not apply to you). Some are a joke they're so bad.

I'd like to see a "Myth Busters" show with Erik and have these silly Golf Digest tip writers have to stand there on camera and be schooled. Golf is hard. The last thing anybody needs is bogus info in such large distribution.

Yes...and it's beautiful. I just would like to see all the work you Erik, Dave and others have done on the media forefront. I like the guys on Golf Channel for the most part, Golf Digest writers, etc. But I don't understand the fear of being wrong. The very basic aspect of this crazy and wonderful game is to improve. People have their own flavor and styles but these usually come about once the basics are learned. It's so aggravating to see poor instruction being taught en masse. I understand Dave Leadbetter has an accomplished career. I'd just like to see for example, you and Erik on the Golf Channel with Michael Breed presenting your well researched and sound instruction. If I had had the instruction provided by you and the others here years ago... I'd probably be a scratch golfer. Years of incorrect advice is tough to undo but in continuously working on it. Any way, enough babbling. Thank you Mike, Dave and Erik.

It's okay - they'll come out with another list of "tips" next month which will directly contradict this month's. :-D

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
