I've tried the putter off the tee at the driving range. Went 150-160ish but the hosel got bent. Turns out a putter isn't necessarily designed to withstand forces like your other clubs. I wouldn't recommend anyone try it

I thought this might be a thread on how far you can throw your putter after 3 putting.

Now it's all in the wrist. There's different techniques of putter tosses. There's the Garcia style putter toss of his early years which is the side arm into the water hazard near the green. I'm particularly fond of that one. I've done that one back toward my golf cart particularly because I can't buy a new putter. It's a pretty accurate toss as well since I actually hit my bag with it, so the "toss of disgust" after three jacking a four foot birdie putt was not held against me for poor ettiquette since it was followed immediately by me picking up the flag ready to put it back in the hole after my opponent tapped in their bogey putt.

Well...my putter is from my first set of Wal-Mart golf clubs....(Foremost) .. I have to admit though, I have cringed a bit while swinging it....because putting is one of my strong points...(I practice stopping a a golf ball on top of a Q-Tip inline from 10'away.) And I've tried several other putters, including building my own....and nothing works better than that one. To give a little background, I didn't pick up the game until I was 43....I'm 58 now...and on a good day I can push my 9 iron 150...but it's basically my 100-120yard club....My best score was an 85 on a par 72. EDIT: BTW: My username comes from regular visits to the woods on the golf course....lol.

I *could* be wrong but I don't think you are doing it right...

I am struggling with why I would want to hit my putter "yards" ... I have yet to see a 100 yard green ... I think in terms of feet with my putter and only on a putting surface (unless on the fringe in some cases)

:-D

This begs the question, can you throw a 3 iron further than a putter? Let's ask Rory.

I have never intentionally tried to see how far my putter stroke goes. I did try using it from under a small forest of pine trees. That did not turn out so good. The Super Stroke grip that was on it twisted around and it took two strokes to get out of there. All through the round, I had to keep spinning it back. I guess the question is why would I be doing that in the first place? That is what drivers are for.

I admit it, I've played a few entire holes with my putter.  I even made a par on our 5th hole, a downhill par 5, about 495 yards long.  Tee it forward, really high, and try to catch it on the upswing, about 200 yards.  The next one from the fairway wasn't quite so good, but the tough shot was the 120-yard "half-putter" through a swale and onto the green.  I'd guess this was about 12 or 15 years ago, with my old TP Mills putter.  With the newer face inserts, I don't think I'd try it.

hmmm... not rory, but... "bullseye" putter vs. 3-iron... i think i'll take the bullseye... better weight balance... makes a nice tight rotation through the air like a baton... most aesthetically pleasing flight path of any club i've ever had the pleasure to fling... :-D various mallet/etc. vs. 3-iron... mallets would likely fly farther, but makes an ugly oscillating flight path... i vote 3-iron for aesthetics... broomstick... never owned or thrown one so can't comment... note: having mellowed with age, my temper tantrums are now limited to an occasional "i cannot believe i suck this bad"... :-P

LOL....Yeah...I only do it to freak people out. There is another shot I developed with my putter and I had never seen anyone else do it before..and then one day I saw Tiger do it...and never before or since have I seen anyone else. This is a greenside shot when the ball is in really nasty stuff and buried up. It's kind of hard to describe, but bear with me. To give you an idea....the handle of the putter will be pointed at the hole...the club perpendicular to the ground...and you tap down like your trying to pound the ball in the ground. You hit the back end of the ball and "pinch" it out....it comes out hot with topspin...so it's definitely something you want to practice first, and reserve for when you need it.

Years ago I was caddying for a gentleman who missed a short putt and got very upset. I put the pin back in the hole, and by the time I could get to the tee to give him a driver, he had already hit his tee shot with the putter. It went about 200 yards.

You're talking about this Tiger shot? Vijay holed out with that shot at the Players a few years back. It's a fairly known technique it's just that the occasion to use it rarely happens, and you need the right kind of putter.
