I'm Always Injured


It seems like this past year or so I'm always having neck or shoulder problems. Just a few months ago, I was dealing with a scapula or trapezius injury on my right side that shut down my workouts for almost a month. Now I have a minor injury on my left side from last week. I felt a tweak in my neck on a swing when it happened but didn't think anything of it because that kind of happens once in a while, but there's a tightness there I haven't been able to shake and a noticeable weakness when I'm doing something like pullups. It doesn't hurt, but it's not 100%.

I also jammed my right wrist on a fat shot yesterday and it hurt to extend my wrist (there was even discomfort just putting). Couldn't put any weight on it last night. That seems to have gone away this morning. I'm going out to play later and see how it feels. Probably going to shut down the upper body workouts for a week though and just do core and leg stuff.

I've been doing a 90-day workout program since January, but due to one injury or another, I'm constantly starting it over. I think I've restarted four times now. I've never finished the entire program, but I'm also kind of bored of it, too. I decided to switch to a calisthenics program that will make things interesting again once I heal a bit from the most recent injury. There are a lot of pulling and scapula strength exercises in that program that I'm hoping will strengthen the problem areas for me to prevent injuries in the future. That and some of the holds seem really cool to learn to do. And handstands 😃

Yeah, I know how you feel. Last year was an injury riddled season for me. Shoulder, neck, and knee issues for several months.

All I kept thinking was that things would get better, while still going through what ever I could do, on a day to day basis. Mental perseverance got me through it all. That, and staying physical, without over doing it.

Fortunately I managed to get through it all. Golf wise, for the past 12 months, I have been pretty much injury free. Have also been playing some of my best, consistent golf in a long time. Best golf for me anyways. 

October is about 6+/- weeks away. That is my month of just kicking back, and reevaluating my next 12 months of activities. Sort of my own personal golf, and health in general recharge.

I'm getting older by the minute (66 and counting) and have had constant lower back aches and pains brought on by life I think.

In January started doing planks, pushups and a light stretching routine.

Can't get over the difference.

The previous back pain from walking 18 has subsided significantly, especially looser feeling in the hips. Still play in a band and the rigours of a three set gig are much less telling on the body.

I'm not running marathons but that core strength and stretching  sure makes a difference.

Hope all is better soon...

Give some serious thought to a yoga class.   They incorporate strength and flexibility.

Youre like the Bob Sanders of golf... Ive been playing through a torn/arthritic trapiezus for the past two years. it sucks.

Doh, kind of know what you're going through, my back has recovered, but hips don't feel right, inflamed from overuse. Can't play/practice as much as I'd like, have to take days off.

It's weird. The most recent stuff isn't affecting my golf, at least not to my knowledge. It's more a quality of life issue from dealing with constant minor discomfort and not being able to train the way I want to.

As am I, though not nearly old enough to be able to use it as an excuse, unfortunately. I'm pretty sure I'm just not genetically gifted in physical durability. It is what it is.

Thanks. I do yoga on my own, though not with any regularity. I used to do yoga more about 10 years ago. I haven't lost any flexibility and I'm stronger now than I was back then. I'm thinking the problem is I sustain minor injuries due to work and they don't heal properly by the time I aggravate them again.

Unfortunately I have always had snapping scapula problems ever since I was a kid. It's just an area I need to strengthen and I can't strengthen it because I keep hurting it.

If you can give it time to rest and heal properly I would think that's more important than playing/practicing golf more, especially if it might affect your long term health. My shoulders can't heal properly because I can't take weeks off of work at a time.

Rest?  Who has time to rest?!  This is golf... we need to play, dammit.  That said, I've been laid up for 4 months this summer with a frayed tendon/ligament in my elbow.  While my buddies are happily playing I am riding along in their cart or walking to stay in shape.  No fun, but I will be back with a vengeance.  I hit three 9 irons on the range this morning, after two prolotherapy injections, and the trajectories couldn't have been more than 2 inches apart from each other.  And I've worked 4 months on chipping and putting... learned a few secrets. Look out when I make my comeback!  I will be back better than ever.

I'm not sure if it's OK for me to reply to a blog or not. I checked the rules but couldn't find anything definitive. I apologize in advance if I shouldn't be posting here. I'm really not trying to get into trouble by commenting and will move on if needed.

@billchao I've been pretty lucky not to have many of those kinds of spontaneous nagging injuries in my life but I can imagine how annoying it must be. I assume you're familiar with the benefits of ice, heat and your doctor. I've also hurt my wrist slamming the dang club into the ground a few inches behind the ball. Like you the pain didn't seem to last too long after some icing and heat but I sure haven't hit one that fat since!

@Double Mocha Man your elbow issue - is it medial epicondylitis - otherwise known as golfer's elbow?

You are an active person and do a job that has activity in it. Injuries unfortunately come with that, especially as we age. I always have something. Right now my neck is sore and it is frustrating. But I have become very good at treating my injuries and stay active just avoiding the area that hurts.

Try to strengthen weak areas with the calisthenics you are doing and body weight exercises. Resistance bands are good too. Remember that lighter weight and more reps can do as much as heavier resistance too. You already stretch, but focus on weaker areas that may be leading to the issues. And rest when you can too.  You are naturally thin (you b**tard!!!), so you don't need to worry about that right now.

The weird thing is, the shoulder thing doesn't affect my golf swing. Swinging the club probably doesn't help it heal any faster, but it hasn't stopped me from playing at all.

The wrist problem went away after a couple of days. Unfortunately I can't say the same for hitting fat shots.

Yea I'm slowly learning to cope. Figure it's a fact of my life at this point.

I have a pretty good knowledge base in fitness and the programs I follow are really good so I'm covered there. There are shoulder rehabilitation type movements built in because most people undertrain those muscles. With calisthenics shoulder strength and mobility are very important so I think I'm definitely doing the right program for my needs at this point.

I'm not naturally thin, I'm just instinctively good at consuming calories at maintenance level?

I probably don't eat enough anymore TBH.

Felt good after Labor Day weekend and started my calisthenics workout program. It's going to be really good for my shoulders because there are a lot of holds that require stability from undertrained muscles. Good stuff.

Yesterday I did something at work and I could feel my back on my left side start to tighten up. It was pretty much locked up by the evening and not much better this morning. I slept like crap.

I'm so over this f***ing shit.

Can you wear a back belt while working? A lot of mechanics at work wear them. They have them loose then tighten when they have to do something physical?

I am also interested to look at your calisthenics program. Getting bored with mine.

I have an inversion table and swear by it.  5 minutes per day does wonders for the back.

No. It probably would just get in the way. There's a lot of crawling into tight spaces and contorting involved sometimes, that's when I think it happened yesterday. I'm pretty sure it's just tightness and I didn't tear something.

I do the Complete Calisthenics program. I skipped levels 1-2 and started straight at 3.

I have no place to put one, though it was something I have always wanted for years. Maybe I'll try hanging upside down from my pullup bar.

Hopefully after 5 months (summer!) of not playing I'm about to embark on a 9 hole outing to test the waters.  Did x-ray, cortisone, ice/heat, home exercises, physical therapy and just completed my 3rd prolotherapy injection yesterday.  In the meantime I have practiced chipping and putting.  Without a doubt I am now the best putter in a 50 mile radius!  😁  For a partial UCL tear in the right elbow I am following the lead of major league pitchers with Tommy John surgery and have made mechanical adjustments to my swing.  More languid, lazy with a dash of centrifugal force.  In the past I would muscle the club through the latter part of the downswing.  This new swing, other than keeping me on the course, may be a good thing.

Well it’s time to resurrect this blog post...

Lifted something heavy last week and strained something in my lower back. Lift with your legs, I tell other people 🤦🏻

It’s not too bad, though. Just painful enough to remind me it’s there and it bothers me a little when I rotate my torso or when I bend down which I do a lot at work. I should probably crouch more often than I bend to begin with tbh. It bothers me more as the day goes on which is expected.

I’m certainly not in my 20s and made of rubber anymore at the very least. But I’ve always had a belief that physical durability is a genetic trait that some people have more of than others. I apparently did not put enough points into it at character creation 😉

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. It’s pretty mild, just going to take this week off working out and it should heal up nicely. It gets a little better everyday.

Just my luck, the weather is nice out and my new driver just arrived 😭

I just watched Bryson on the Golf Channel. He said that staying healthy is all about constricting your muscles. Maybe if you did one of those yoga poses like the wheel, then you'd be instantly healed!

Well this one is new: felt a sharp pain in my left side starting last week when I lay on that side or extend my left arm overhead. It’s just to the left of my nipple basically and kind of under my pec; feels like it’s right on top of my ribs.

I thought it was a minor strain but it doesn’t seem to completely fit an intercostal muscle or a serratus anterior injury. Last night I was probing around and it seems like something is inflamed that runs down my ribs from my armpit. If I had to guess I’d say it’s the long thoracic nerve, but I’m about as qualified to make that determination as I am to fix rockets.

Needless to say, there is no golf for me.
