I went to a local golf store recently and their trackman was giving some drives around 305-310 total distance but my swing speed is only 112 AT THE MOST, average about 103.  I never hit it this far in real golf, could the store be tampering with the trackman to get us golfers suckered into buying the $500-$600 driver?

Anyone else here experience something similar at a golf store simulator?

I wouldn’t be shocked to see a shady move like this. Does the fitter have any awards or recognition from any manufacturers? I only have been to one simulator/fitter and he has won multiple awards from Ping for his fitting ability and I never gave any consideration that he would do anything like that but I could certainly see it happening.

No fitter involved, these are just hitting stalls they let customers use for demo or used clubs.

Take one of your clubs next time and see what the monitor says . Then hit the test clubs

I did, my driver is 44.5" with a 85 gram shaft farthest it was going on the simulator was 295 total distance which is above my max distance with this club..............I just have trouble believing my drives were really going 310ish total distance considering my swing speed........unless they had it set up on the simulator where i have a strong wind at my back and driving the ball downhill 🙂

I don't know all the adjustments available, but I believe one is the altitude, which CAN make a difference in distance.  However, it seems possible that you could gain 10 to 15 yards with a different driver.  I know I gained a similar amount by upgrading from my beloved old Titleist 910.

Oh I was thinking you were talking about a fitter juicing it on the more expensive clubs to get you “fit” into what they wanted to sell.

We don't have Trackman at our place but what we do have has settings where you can " juice" it as well as dial it back.

Things also need to be recalibrated so if that hasn't been done in a while it'll give bad readings.  Another thing is a random person could have went into the settings and screwed with it.  Heck, I could go into the one at the stores I frequent and change the settings and leave if I wanted to.

This is something that happens. There's a setting in the simulator where you can make an altitude adjustment. You can also firm up the ground to make the distance appear long than it would be in real life.

If you're going to use an in-store simulator, bring your old clubs to see how they compare and to give yourself a baseline. And then only look at carry distances, not total distances.

  • iacas changed the title to Golf Store Tampered With In-Store Simulator to Give Superior Results?

I recently tried a new driver at a demo day and was shocked to see 293 on the trackman. I went and grabbed my own driver and it was over 270 which is close to what I actually hit it when well struck.  I guess new technology does count for something. Swing speed was 105 and we were close to sea level.  No, I didn't buy it because it will just be 20yds further in the woods, lol.  I saw similar improvements with newer woods and irons too. I did look up the specs for the newer irons and see that the manufacturer has given them stronger lofts for the new model.

What launch monitor was it? I know with gc2, you don’t tinker with the unit itself; rather, the tinkering is done within the fr1 or fax software by sliding the boost multiplier. You can also make the fairways firm. I own a gc2, but have only used trackman and flightscope a little bit so I can’t help you there.

Pay attention to ball speed, not clubhead speed. Also, look at carry, not total. You should have a pretty good handle on what you typically produce on average in regards to ball speed, launch angle, spin, peak height, descent angle, and shape with each club so you can tell when something is suspect.

Nonetheless, as others have suggested, always test against your own clubs as a baseline.

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
