Please! give an actual explanation on who you think is better.

"Tiger because he won 15 majors"- Non acceptable explanation.

"Sam Snead because he won 82 tour events"-- Non acceptable explanation.

That's not how this site works. I'm glad you're enjoying the poll feature, but since this topic pretty heavily favors Tiger, I don't think you're going to get many votes for Snead:

And who IS better? Tiger. Sam is dead.

Making up a poll where 100%of sane responders say the same thing is not "discussing".

You may as well ask whether anyone thinks baseballs might replace golf balls in some major tournaments at some time in the future.

In EVERY genuine classification, Tiger exceeds Snead, in case you were wondering. Except, perhaps smoking.

And Snead was incredibly flexible, even when he was old.

Snead was a great player, but many of his wins were against weak competition. Loved his swing though, so smooth.

How many PGA Tour titles should Tiger Woods have? Using the same 'Sam Snead criteria,' quite a few more

Perhaps you’ve read this...But this article explains it pretty well. Tiger easily surpasses Snead. I can guarantee you if Nicklaus was closer to contending for most victories he’d been aggressively pushing to discount many of Snead’s wins.

Wow, @Vinsk ... I had no idea how many of Sam Snead's wins were so short.  I'm not the topic author, but I hadn't heard that. Thanks!

I'm almost surprised Snead's sole LPGA victory wasn't counted towards his total by some people.

I never really doubted that Tiger was better than Snead (I didn't get into golf until mid-aughts, so it wasn't like I was there for the era when "will this guy be the next big thing?" was even a question).  I just assumed the standard for a win was the same -- none of this one round thing.

Yep. The ‘moving the goal posts’ stuff can get pretty annoying. The debate really stems from leisure sports fans against those who look at stats and real data. Kind of like Vegas vs AP or Coaches Poll in NCAA. There is no bias just facts. We don’t care how a person ‘feels’ about Snead, Nicklaus or Tiger. Nicklaus was my favorite for many years. Tiger came along and changed the game. I ‘felt’ Tiger was a more gifted and accomplished golfer but it wasn’t really until this site, largely due to @iacas @brocks and @turtleback that I was properly educated on the matter. And the same essentially applies for Tiger vs Snead. Yet never once has Tiger made a case for himself against Jack or Sam.

    • Eh. He broke ONE of Tiger's records. Youngest to be ranked #1 in AJGA. It didn't help that Tiger's birthday is in late December, or that Tiger didn't play many AJGA events before he was 15. Did he do any of these things? TIGER WOODS' AMATEUR VICTORIES YEAR WIN(S) 1984 10-and- under Junior World Golf Championships Boys    1985 10-and- under Junior World Golf Championships Boys    1988 Boy's 11-12 Junior World Golf Championships   1989 Boy's 13-14 Junior World Golf Championships   1990 Boy's 13-14 Junior World Golf Championships, Insurance Youth Golf Classic   1991 U.S. Junior Amateur, Boys 15–17 Junior World Golf Championships, Orange Bowl International Junior Look at some other AJGA Players of the Year. How many of these names do you recognize? A few, for sure. I assure y'all, I'm not trying to pee in your Cheerios. I just don't get what the point is. Okay. I get that, then. Thanks.
    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
    • Day 1: Spent some time hitting some balls. Working on my hips and a “soft” and straight trail arm.
    • Slight digression on the way to my point. Back in the day there were a lot of people who said that Tiger won because of “the Tiger effect” where people pushed too hard and made mistakes trying to catch him and fell by the wayside. I thought that was BS. It was just that he was that much better than them. I don’t think anything has changed my mind on that.    The hype about Miles Russell is very limited. I’ve seen nothing about him outside of some fairly hardcore golf websites. But I think that the reason those people are talking about him is because he is very good. Same as Tiger. And like I said he just broke one of Tiger’s records. That gets hardcore golf fans to pay attention.
