Reviving this thread...

I’m playing with a half set on Thursday at Memorial Park here in Houston. Going with D, 3H, 5I, 7I, 9I, SW, and Putter.
The only club I am not 100% on is the SW. it’s my usual around the green club, but there aren’t many bunkers (19) and the greens have shaved edges so a lot of putting will be done from just off the green...maybe some 9I bump and runs. I’ll stick with the SW I guess, for those partial wedges shots less than 100 yards and such. Will be interested to see how it works out and if I can score with the minimal set.

Playing a half set it so enjoyable. Sling  them on your back and go.  I choose 6 clubs D , 3H, 6i, 9i, sw & putter.

I love playing with a half set - especially for twilight rounds in the summer. Usually I’ll pack the clubs in a Sunday bag, then in toss them in the back of my car (I work at a closed campus facility so no risk of theft), and hit the course right after work around 5pm. I don’t notice much difference in scoring. My half bag is set up something like this:

Driver

5W

4, 6, 8 iron

PW

60 degree

Putter

Interesting.

I carry all 14, and here are the clubs that I've actually used on my last round.

D, 3W, 3-9I, PW, GW, SW, LW, and putter.  Granted I've only used 3-5I only once or twice each depending on where they place the pin and/or the tee box on par 3's and short par 4's.

So, yes, I do use all of them.

I was just thinking about this the other day and am going to play my next solo round with a half bag to see how I play. I’ll probably play with Driver, driving iron, 6i, 8i, pw, sw, putter.

I haven't played a lot this year (hard being a single golfer in the Covid era) but the few times I have, I have loved the 10-club bag for walking. I'm playing alone anyway so it's not a handicap round. The one round I knew I was playing with others I carried my full set. I think I could remove the wood and not really suffer anymore to be honest

I'm doing:

Driver, wood, 21* hybrid, 4, 6, 8, PW, SW, LW, Putter

I enjoy walking nine in the evening with a half bag. Usually D, 7w, 6i, 8i, PW, P.  I don’t usually pack a 7w, but it works in this bag, as I usually play longer tees on my own.  Odd thing is that I consistently score around par while walking with that setup. Not sure whether it is the half bag, the relaxed walk in the evening, or absence of competition. On a cart with a full kit in a group of guys - I Need some luck to score below 80.  (There might be a lack of focus playing with the group.)

Pace of play may be a factor. Some players are affected by it.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

    • Have a 19° (moved to 20.5°) Titleist 915H. I just love the club. Beautiful feel off the sweetspot, high launch, soft landing. Versatile. In the future, with less overall speed I will replace my 4 and 5 irons with another hybrid, something around 26°.
    • Broke the head of a Stealth Plus on a warm up. TaylorMade send me a new head but I decided to upgrade it to the new IQ10 LS and pay the difference. While I was waiting for the 8° head to arrive at the store I messed around with all the multi brand putts they had available. I instantly liked a black TaylorMade Spider, not the new one but very similar. The weight felt perfect. Big line in the middle for easy alignment. I was playing and old Zebra so the change in technology and feel was huge. Fast review of both clubs.. Driver QI10 LS. I always hit to ball up in the sky. I was playing the stealth at 7° with a 60g X low flight shaft and I was still hitting it pretty high. With the QI10 playing it at 6° now is almost hard for me to hit it high, with the same shaft the ball comes out lower and with less spin. so I'm really happy with the change. Putter Spider. I love it. It took me an afternoon to figure out how to grip it (it comes with a superStroke grip) but after that it all came into place. More stable on short putts and a good weight to swing smoothly on long putts and with added forgiveness over my old zebra.
    • I have a 2h but we don’t get along anymore. It’s a bit of an abusive relationship - she gives me just enough hope once in a while that things are going to be better and then it’s back to the same old shit. I went to a PING fitting recently with the intention to replace the hybrid with a 5w or something, thinking maybe I’ll be better with a fairway wood than a hybrid. But it turns out the best club I hit that fits in that slot in the bag is another hybrid so I ordered it.
    • Day 547, May 2, 2024 18 holes with @DrizZzY using my TruStick®. Hit a LOT of really good shots today.
    • Not the last thing I bought or bought anything at all but Sun Day Red stuff seems a bit overpriced for it essentially being rebranded Nike apparel. I'm hearing the resale prices are wild though. Either way, I highly doubt I will indulge as I'm not much of a brand guy or a collector. But to keep up my super nice guy image have never turned down a gift though 😇 Tiger doesn't seem to sell stuff like MJ or Kanye did.
