Who else DOESN'T root for Tiger?

I know how good Tiger is. I know how great he is. The guy is amazing. Incredible. I completely respect him as a golfer.

But if you listen to the guys who play with him, they say the opposite is true. That he is warm and funny.

No less than John Daly said that Tiger is his favorite player to be paired with. I don't think he's cold and robotic, but he does get damn serious about his game sometimes. Heh. Robots don't slam their clubs around and slap the shit out of their bags after sending a few too many drives into the desert during matchplay

I really tried NOT rooting for him. But yeah like someone said earlier, he's a once in a lifetime athlete who not only is the most talented golfer but from all accounts is also one of the HARDEST working... in other words he gets every ounce out of his talent...I can't help but cheer for him.

But I think he would be loved so much more (not that he cares) if we saw him go through some ups and downs, like Jack, Arnie, Watson, and Miller. Too bad he's just THAT much better than everyone else - I think maybe Rich Beem was the last person to outplay him in an impt tourney. Rivalries arouse passionate followings, no?

On a related note, I think the public really started to like him more as they saw his vulnerable side especially when his dad passed away. Understandable but kinda intrusive if you know what I mean...

Last I want to say that I wasn't the biggest fan until I saw him in person. When someone is hitting MOON shots, clearing pines, carrying 300+, like I saw him do in 2002 at Bethpage, and hitting half wedges that take once bounce and check up at the range at the AT&T; National last year, you can't help but be a fan...

Tiger has been a major influence on my life... he's a hero of mine who I've followed since his US Jr Amateur days (back when I was in like elementary and middle school). I even worked for his foundation, and he has been important for my life as a fellow non-white golfer (people who want to respond to that negatively, relaaaax, I'm not liberal or very PC either but Tiger's skin color is a huge aspect of his positive impact)

Absolutely.. I always root for the under dog, and im like that for alot of sports. Of course im going to have my favorite teams and players but alot of them are underdogs anyway. I've never really rooted for Tiger, now more than ever i find myself rooting against him. Not only is it because he's so dominant, its also because i dont like his personality or manerisms what so ever.

But im still like everybody else and cant help but sit back and marvel at the way he completely destroys competition and course's. If it was the old days, id be one of the guys rooting for palmer and player.. not Nicklaus.

I know how good Tiger is...Tiger is just cold, and robotic. I don't bond with him. I'd rather root for a human...Rooting for Tiger is like rooting for Microsoft, or Standard Oil, or AT&T.;

or a Cylon agent...he's a FRAGGIN CYLON!!!

There are enough color (funny) guys on the tour. Fake people like Phil Mickelson are a joke. Ok so he gives a father and son two tickets to the super bowl. Whipty f'ing doo. Other players talk to the fans when they play. Who cares. Tiger may not be the most colorful when he plays but he is doing what he is supposed to do. Maybe people that don't appreciate good golf shots and prefer guys that suck but communicate with the fans. This is obviously directed toward the people that think he is cold and robotic.

As far as competition goes, he has none. He might have a few faults that allows someone to overcome him once and awhile, but its not consistent, obviousy. For the golfers that play competitively, its amazing to see a person play that can dominate the other players simply by showing up. I have never been "star struck" when I see other athletes or even go out of my way to see an athlete. I can honestly say, no matter how corny it is, that I was "star struck" the first time I saw Tiger. For me, seeing the person that has shaped the way I play golf, which is my passion, was a big deal. I hope he dominates every single tourny he is in and breaks Jack's record by 10. I find enjoyment out of seeing him play because I think he competes against himself.

I guess I fall into that "tiger bandwagon" group. lol

I love to watch Tiger play. He hits shots that other pro's dream about. His athleticism, his charachter, his knowledge of the game - all things that I aspire to. When he hits unbelieveable shots I get excited - like the chip in on 16 at Augusta, or most recently his 2,3,2,3 at the Matchplay against JB Holmes.

I've watched him play up close - at WGC and Ryder Cup in Ireland. Seeing your the guy up hit a ball 5 feet away is the closest i'll ever get - I was in awe. He probably is my hero - or at least that's what people who know me who know very little about golf assume.

But I don't root for him.

I don't root for Tiger. Never have, never will. Some of the reasons have to do with him, others have to do with golf coverage. Want to have good coverage of a golf tournament? Have Tiger get hurt and drop out in the first round. Otherwise, all you see on TV is Tiger. That's the reason that's out of his control but I hate watching a tournament when he is playing especially when he's leading. Golf coverage on Sportscenter is all just Tiger, usually they just show and talk about Tiger and then mention off-handedy who is actually leading the tournament. I watch more Women's golf because of this.

When he first went on tour listening to him interview just turned me against him. He's gotten better over time but once you dislike a guy and root for him to lose year over year, that just doesn't change.

Notice that I didn't say anything about how good he is...he's unreal, just the best. I respect his game, I respect how great a shape he is in, it's shame I can't root for him but I just can't. He's not as bad as the Tar Heels and all their ignorant fans but it's still bad

Tiger Woods has 'talent on loan from God'.

I believe that even after I (finally) learned THE correct way to hit irons, and experienced the exhiliaration of perfect ball flight.

Eventually even Jack Nicklaus will be in Tiger's shadow.

We are not likely to see another Tiger Woods in our lifetimes and that's why I took my son to Congressional last summer.

Back when I casually watched golf and didn't really play much I rooted against him because of all the reasons people have listed here. But, as I began really playing and became an avid pro golf fan, I got past all that. Fact is, I love the way he plays. His personality may seem robotic on the course, but his game has so much personality it easily makes up for it in my eyes. He plays more like Jack, Trevino and all those great players of yesterday than anyone else on tour (I also like Phil because he plays more like this than anyone other than Tiger).

Sure, he can hit the ball a hundred miles, but that is not unusual today. What I love is his ability to stick it within 2 feet of the flag from literally anywhere on the course. He has more shots in the bag than anyone else and he regularly uses them. To me, the true robots on the PGA tour are all the "next big things" farmed out of the Leabetter Academy: Pound the ball as far and straight as possible with the driver, Hit partial wedge shot to about 25 feet from the hole, putt twice, rinse and repeat.

Nicklaus was just as robotic on the course as Tiger is... maybe even more so. I rooted for Jack, I now root for Tiger. If I'd been into pro golf in Arnie's time, I'd have been in his army. I love watching great golf, and the best golf is played by the best players. So I watch and root for the leaders. I rarely watch when Tiger and Lefty take the week off.

The reason Tiger gets the support he does from so many people is the average person loves to see something special. In my opinion the most amazing thing Tiger has done over his career is really never talked about. The fact that he has only missed like 2 cuts in 11 years is a joke. I mean some of the guy's they talk about in a good way about only missing 3 to 5 cuts in a season is considered acceptable, as long as their $ total is good. Tiger also might be the best player under the gun ever in any sport. It's hard not to pull for him so you can see that next big thing he pulls off. Look at the match play, Arron Baddley(who's great) birdies 6 holes on the BACK NINE and gets beat....WOW bwgolfer

He an obnoxious prima donna. I have almost abandoned the Golf Channel because of their obsession with Tiger. He is ruining golf in my opinion. I'll take a J. B. Holmes any day.

I would rather watch Daly, even when he's hungover.

Can you back up your claim that Tiger is obnoxious? I mean the media that covers him is extremely obnoxious, but I don't think he has any control over this. I guess he would probably lose some of the coverage if he quit winning everything.

The Daly comment makes me think your reply was sarcastic.

You really prefer Holmes and his 50 practice swings????? Your priorities are totally out of whack.

No doubt Tiger is a once-in-a-lifetime player. His talent with a club is beyond amazing. That said, I just want to see some good competition. Too many times Tiger makes watching golf as a competitive sport - well boring.

So I don't root for him. If he is playing, no doubt he will amaze me, but I'd like to see some more of the pros out there step up and make professional golf "competitive"!

    • Day 298: range session during lunch. Hit balls for about 20 minutes, focusing on start line and curve. Much better than last night. Then did a stack putting session, which was solid (for me).
    • Day 2 (3 May 24) - Played 18 with the Men’s group today….a fun round in which my elderly neighbor was part of the foursome I was in.
    • You advertise LIV as "golf but louder" You had DJ's pumping Jock Jams all over the place. You have Bros who are really into golf and TFG shot gunning 26 oz bud lights, while double fisting a 19 oz coors. What type of behavior do you expect?
    • Did LIV pros cross ‘etiquette’ line at Masters? 3-time major winner has thought Did LIV Golf pros cross an “etiquette” line last month at the Masters? Three-time major winner Padraig Harrington has a thought. I do not mind cursing. I rather see some emotion on the course and honest reactions to bad shots or what not. I didn't catch it being a TON of cursing in this Masters. It was not noticeable.
    • I had to think about this topic for a while. I don't tend to remember specific details about my putts, but a few do stand out in my mind so I guess they're worth noting. I don't know that I'd call them my favorite but it's close enough. #18 at Spooky Brook Might be the hardest 4' putt I've ever had. Pin was back right and I hit my third shot just to the right of it. The green slopes fairly severely back to front. I read the green but I knew the putt anyway as I've seen it before. I told the guys I was playing with that the putt was it was going to break almost 3' and if it doesn't go in I'd have a longer coming back up for par than I was looking at. It went in. #12 at Quail Brook I'm not even sure how to describe this green properly. It's not quite a two-tiered green, but the back and front are separated by a ridge that goes across the middle of it, with the green sloping harder off the front than the back. You can generally putt from the front to a back hole location but good luck keeping the ball on the green if you putt from back to front. On this particular day, I was looking at the latter. I had to putt up into the apron due to how the ball was going to break and that helped slow the ball down enough to hit the hole at the perfect speed. One of the rare birdies I've seen on that hole. #2 at Hyatt Hills Short par 5. This makes the list because it's the first eagle putt I've ever made, which funny enough happened the day after the first eagle I've ever made. I've made two eagles in all my life and they came on back to back days. I wasn't even planning on playing golf - it was a Monday - but I was doing some work at the place I used to work at when I was younger and catching up with some of the guys I've known for years. They were going out to play in the afternoon and had a spot available. I used to see these guys every day for years but we've never played together, so I said I'm in. I hit a really good approach shot into slope that separated the two tiers on the green and spun the ball closer to the hole. Had roughly 8' left to the hole, a downhill right to left breaker. One of the guys said, "You've got to make this, I've never seen an eagle before," and I said, "I've never made an eagle putt before." And then I made it. #17 at Stoneleigh @GolfLug's post reminded me of my own heroics on #17 a couple of years ago. The hole was back left, in the bottom tier. I hit my approach short of the green and flubbed my chip so it stayed on the top tier. I read how the putt was going to break after the ramp (is that what you call it?), then read my putt up to that point. It needed to basically die at that point because if it hit the slope with any kind of speed, it would long past the hole and possibly off the green. I hit the putt perfectly and holed the 40-footer center cup. #6 at Meadow at Neshanic Valley, #15 in the Round This was during the stroke play qualifier of my tournament. It might be a little bit of recency bias and I hit some really good long putts in the four rounds I played, but this 7-footer was my favorite putt of the entire tournament. The hole was cut on the top of a ridge. I hit my tee shot short right but hit a pretty good chip just long and below the hole. Play had backed up at this point, with the ladies waiting on the tee while we were finishing up. I hit the putt just a hair on the high side and it curled around the hole, fell back a couple of inches and stopped on lip. We all looked at it incredulously, "How does that not fall in?" Before I took my first step towards the hole, the ball must have thought the same thing and decided to drop.
