Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum. I have  not been on any golf forum before. I am a weekend golfer here in Baird, TX. Our course is closed now but will be opening in a few days for members only. I have a Skytrak golf simulator. I have been using calaway diablo edge irons for a while now. Decided to go get new irons. When I went in I was going to get the ping g710, but the pro decided to let me go back to the hitting area where they have the trackman. He covered the names on the clubs so I could not see what I was hitting. I ended up getting the calaway mavrik standard irons 4 threw sand wedge with an a wedge for gap. Took me a few days to get use to them. I have not been fitted yet I want to play with them a few weeks before I go back for a fit. I am hitting these clubs way farther than my diablo;s, Im guessing these clubs are set up with a different loft. for example I can hit my diablo 7 iron 170 to 175. Hitting the mavrik 7 between 200-210 with an average club head speed of 85mph and ball speed around 115mph, I hit the six iron today averaging 215. I really like these irons. What are your impressions of these irons. I was getting about the same numbers from the trackman.

Thanks

Danny

My pro got the Standard Mavrik as well.  Great clubs!  Glad you’re excited about them.  You’re big concern when you go back to be fit is to make sure your gaps are covered and spaced out nicely.

@tsgtwheeler, Welcome to TST.   We're glad you've found the best forum on the planet to talk golf.  There is a wealth of great information with plenty of great videos from great people.

You did great to hit the clubs before making a decision.

I’m not fully educated on numbers...but 85mph with the 7i and getting 200-210yds? BTW...I have the Mavrik Pro irons and absolutely love them.

Hopefully he’ll get a better feel for the distance each club goes once he gets outside.

Thought the same thing. My speed is around 85mph and I only carry 150 with a 7i, (but then again I'm a 20+ HCer so..).

Do you have any pictures of these numbers? I would assume that is total distance and not carry distance? If so the spin and descent angle are likely too low for you to be able to hold greens. The Mavrik 7 iron loft is 27 degrees.

FWIW if you look at the 5 iron in this image, here is some data (not my data) using a club with lower loft that the Mavrik 7 iron, but a higher clubhead and higher ball speed than you and they didnt come close to 200 yards of carry, and it looks like the total distances were around 180-182.

At 1st, I was suspicious with the 7 iron #'s....now that I looked at the Mavrik specs....yup...those lofts are JACKED.

7 iron = 27*....lol......basically near a standard 5 iron loft.

FWIW, the number stamped on the club is largely irrelevant, he is claiming he hit the 27 degree iron 200-210 yards with a clubhead speed of 85 and ball speed of 115

Even with the loft being strong, using the flightscope trajectory optimizer the only way I was able to get 200 yds of roll at a ball speed of 115 with a 17-19 degree launch angle for a perfectly straight shot with no horizontal launch angle and a 0 degree spin axis was to drop the backspin all the way down to 2500 and even then the carry was 176 rolling to 200.3 with a peak height of 76 feet and that was with the surface type of hard. Lowering the spin to 1500 got me a 176 carry and roll out to 210 yards. The medium and soft surface types produced even less roll out.

@tsgtwheeler do you have any pictures or the trackman report you could share with us? Unless I'm missing something here I haven't been able to find anything that supports the idea that a clubhead speed of 85 and ball speed of 115 from a 27 degree club produced a 200-210 yard shot that has enough spin and proper descent angle required to hold a green.

I did the same thing as you. I couldn’t find a  realistic iron shot in which a 115mph ball speed traveled 210 yards.

This is why I game Ping G20s. Much more traditional lofts and distance accuracy. My 7i is 32 degree loft. All these new sets, Mavrik, Sim etc: have jacked up lofts. Most sets are stock priced from 5 iron to PW cause why would you need a 4i or 3i with these lofts. Screws up your gapping. I play Driver, hybrid and 3i to LW with good gaps. I also found that these jacked lofts were much more inconsistant on distance. I'll stick with my older clubs that go just as far as I want them to and and still be able to work the ball left or right.

There are millions of people who disagree with this. The lofts aren’t just ‘jacked.’ New technology does favor higher launch and a hotter face. However to keep a 7i to still behave like a 7i it’s not just distance that’s considered. It’s trajectory and the ability to hold the green. I’m order to preserve those factors they have to adjust the lofts. I’m just as consistent with my Mavrik Pros as I would be with my Ping Eye2 or Titleist DCI irons but with more distance. Gapping can become more of an issue when you transition from 9i to your wedges. But with some monitor work and loft adjustments it’s not that difficult.
Ping G20’s aren’t exactly old school. I love Ping and have played many of their irons both old and new. I bet you’d find some pleasant results with the newer Ping models. Have you hit the Ping 410’s?
