I have been playing with an iron set consisting of 7 and 8 single length Cobra F9 and 9,10,11 Honma. My wedges are a 52 Cobra or a 54 Cleveland and a 56 single length Cobra. Ping G410 driver and 5 wood and a Cobra 7 wood Ping 5 crossover and Ping G410 6 hybrid. Anyone else with a mixed up set like mine? Any other comments or suggestions?

Nothing wrong with a mixed bag.  I play a pretty mixed bag myself.  I play what I like and works for me.  I used to play 4 wedges, but I dropped a a wedge and added in a 7w.  For me, it's just easier to finesse a wedge than it is to finesse a longer approach shot.  With partial wedges, I seem to be able to keep the spin on the ball, but with a partial long approach shot the ball will just fly lower and with less spin, defeating the whole purpose.  My PW is 48*, so I went 48-54-60 and added the high launch/high spin 7w.  This allows me more options for long par 3's and long approach shots into long par 4's or par 5 green lights.  Here is my bag:

Driver: Callaway Epic Flash set at 8*

3w: Callaway Epic Flash Sub Zero set at 14*

5w: Callaway Epic Flash Sub Zero at 18*

7w: Nike NDS 21* (While it says it is a 5w, it operates as a 7w for me due to the shaft and higher loft.  Nice, high-spinning long approach shots).

4h: Nike Vapor Speed 23*

5i-PW: Taylormade R9 TP Forged (Japan).  I have a back up set of Nike VR TW Forged v10 irons as well.

54* and 60*: Titleist Vokey SM7 both 8* bounce and M grind

Putter: Titleist Scotty Cameron Prototype Studio Stainless center shaft.  I have a back up Seemore sb1 as well.

Ball: I'll use a Titleist ProV1 or X in yellow or use the PRACTICE version.

Nice set.  I have a pretty mixed bag myself; see my signature section.  Ping driver, TourEdge 3-wood, TM hybrids, Titleist irons, Cleveland wedges, TM putter.  I love each club and feel comfortable with them, so if you feel the same, nothing wrong in a mixed bag.  Not sure about using 2 different sets in the irons though, unless the feel is seamless.

Driver: Taylormade M3 (9o) with Mitsubishi Tensei Blue 65 Stiff-flex shaft.  3-wood: Tour Edge Exotics CB2 (15o) with Fujikura Regular-flex

3H: Tour Edge (18o) with R-flex 80g shaft.  4H: 22o  Taylormade Rbz Stage 2 with R-flex shaft.

Irons (5-PW): Titleist 804os with True Temper reg. flex shaft.  Wedges: 50o deg Titleist SM-7 12o bounce F grind, 56o (bent to 54o) Cleveland RTG sand wedge, Cleveland RTX-3 CB 58o wedge 9o bounce.

Putter: TaylorMade Ghost Monte Carlo w/Super Stroke 2.0 grip

Whatever works man. Even if you play best with a different brand for each club (unlikely I think, but you never know), then go for it. It's all about what you can hit the best and most consistent.

Driver: Ping G400 LST
4 wood: something I found in my grandpa's shed
3h: Ping Rapture (from Play It Again Sports)
4h: Callaway RAZR (from eBay)
5-G: P790s
SW: Taylormade Milled Grind
LW: Cleveland RTX3
Putter: Ping Karsten TR 2

    • My two cents? Don't. As a beginner that's interested in learning about the golf swing, you'll find yourself consuming a lot of information, most of which isn't even relevant to your own swing. You need to learn you can't think your way to a good golf swing. Focus on the one thing that you're working on and doing that on every swing, come what may. And remember, mishits happen.
    • Day 6 (7 May 24) - More work in the backyard focused on tempo in addition to setup.  Worked with 6 and 7 irons hitting hard foam balls - used the old MacGregor irons to mix it up a little.
    • No! lol. But they have to be in the right sequence to play mid-handicap golf or little better. Mostly. And even in that there is range/margin for error in the motions and positions that most normal humans can handle. It helps if you have a decent idea of how a golf club moves around the body like you would any other equipment sports (baseball and hockey might be the closest) After all, fairways are 40 yards wide. Don't overthink it. Be diligent in getting basics right. I will concede that it is harder than it sounds but it certainly is not exact angle/exact position/exact degree of bend/exact speed/exact facial expression, etc, every.... single.... time or the result is horrible death.
    • Looking to play in the Severna Park Golf league and it got rained out the first three weeks. I know the course is being renovated so it is not in great shape but the location is easy for me and I would love to meet some other golfers in my area. Anyone here in Maryland Annapolis area?
    • I like to look at the positives.  Overall you are fairly consistent down the center with most shots 20 yards or less off center.  On most fairways that should be in play.  Sure, you had some very short duds, but also if you look there is a good cluster in the 110-125 yard range.  Sure, we would all like to be longer, but knowing your typical shot is more important than trying to hit the 7-Iron 175 Yards.  Just take more club for longer shots and do not worry about it.  Your distances may increase as you improve over time so do not get caught up on that now.
