Hey All,

I just purchased a new SIM2, and boy oh boy am I excited.     Now, I don't want to sing the praises of the Sim2 too much here, because, honestly, I was getting very similar results from the new Cobra and Callaway as well.

But, while getting fit,..   ball speed was up, and launch angle and spin rate were much improved.  Also, it appeared I was making pretty significant gains in dispersion as well.   I know a lot of this has to do with the shaft I was fitted for, every bit as much (if not more than the head).

anyways, I'm excited.   thanks all.

Congratulations.

16 yards is a ton.

I'm curious. First, how did you arrive at 17 yards? Did you hit a bunch with your old gamer and then hit the SIM2? Second, What did you replace with the SIM2? And had you been fitted for that one?

That’s awesome!  Have you had it out on the course yet?  It’ll be strange hitting from spots your old driver couldn’t get you close to!

10 years ago I tried a new driver on demo day at the range.  Seemed to be crushing it.  Bought it and gained 20-25 yards over the old driver which was 6 years old.  Yes Typhoon, it was exhilarating and DeChambeau-empowering to hit from forward spots I'd never played from before.

Nearly 50 PGA Touring pros began playing the same driver that same year.  Guess they noticed the extra distance I was getting.  😁

By the way, I'm not doubting your results. I'm just curious how you know it's 16 yards? and if you were fit for the old gamer because I'm wondering if and when that kind of a jump in yardage could be available to the rest of us.

I was playing a TaylorMade M3 that I bought new Spring of 2017.    Yes, I got fitted for that one.  However, My swing speed is about 8-9mph faster than it was then and I have made some pretty significant swing changes since then.      So, I think I out grew that fit, a bit.        Specifically, I was playing a 53gram stiff shaft, and had started developed a a bit of a straight right push.   In my fitting, the 60 gram shaft with a different kick, seemed to really do a good job of correcting that miss.

when I went in for the fitting - yes, brought my old gamer.   warmed up, and then hit 20 serious drives, put that all on a scatter plot.    Then tried out different drivers and shaft combinations.   narrowed it down to 2 heads (callaway/sim2) and 2 shafts (the kuro kage i ended with and a fujikara 60g).   after that I was feeling a bit tired.   so, came back the next day, and identified what fit best out of those combos.

So, the 16yds was arrived at by the average distance on the scatter plot with my old gamer, and the average on the new combo.   Additionally, dispersion was quite a bit tighter.

but, to answer the question: do I think this 16yd gain is applicable to anyone?    no probably not.   depends on when the last time you were fit was and and how much your swing has changed since then.    The fitting was surely a pretty big contributor to the gains.      but, will you see some gains with the new heads, regardless of fit?   yes, absolutely.

not yet.   doesn't ship to me for a couple weeks.   which should be just in time for this Minnesota weather to turn to golfing weather!

I just purchased a Mav Max to replace my 5 year old XR16 and I am getting results similar to yours. The clubs today seem to have really improved technology over clubs 3-5 years ago. Your results don't surprise me. Take the yardage and run!

We recently had a Callaway fitting day at our club. Long story short....I hit my Epic Flash further and straighter than the Epic Speed (Epic Max was about the same). They tried to fit me into a different shaft (currently a Hzruds smoke Yellow (70))and they all felt really light. I kept telling them that and they kept showing me how I hit the Epic Max further and had more ball speed. I did hit it further....2-3 yards. Not sure if it was any straighter. Just looking at the results on the range (with my eyes) it looked like maybe about as accurate. Computer said it was a little more accurate. It seems like it takes about 5-6 years to see dramatic increases. Maybe I'm wrong. I the Epic Flash was actually better when I made a really good swing and hit it hard. A good swing with the Max or the Speed didn't go as far or stay as straight (slight draw).

My bag:

Taylor Made R7 (x-stiff).
Taylor Made Burner 2 irons (stiff)
Cleveland Wedges (gap and 60)
Odyssey two ball putter (white)

thinking about it a bit more..

First, I bought my M3 in Spring of 2018, not 2017 as mentioned above.   So, played with it for 3 summers.

Just trying to add a bit of information. I was curious about how much of this gain was related to head and how much was fit.

This is certainly not a perfect test, but at least a decent place to start.   I went back and looked at MyGolfSpy's driver test from 2018, and compared it to 2021 driver test.
I took the average of The standard (not Max, Or MaxD or whatever).    Callaway. Cobra, and TaylorMade from each year.

Here were the totals:

2018:

Ball Speed - 134.4
Carry - 217.12
Distance - 231.37

2021:

Ball Speed - 139.39
Carry - 225.97
Distance - 240.43

This is not a great test, as it is a conglomeration of all swing speeds.     I know in a bit, they break those tests out by low, moderate, and fast swing speeds.   Maybe I'll update then.

But, as a general look, I feel like this makes sense.   about 50% of my gains from club, and 50% from fit.

    • the rules have changed, but this would fall under 11.2 in the current rules.  General Penalty to any player who deliberately deflects a ball in motion, and you must replay the putt.
    • Day 250 4-29 Getting chest through with speed on downswing and wrist arch. Also worked on some moving the pelvis slightly away in the backswing. Feel like im going too fast and long, looks like it on the recordings too.
    • Interesting that it's no penalty, but then again, I can't imagine someone would purposefully put their foot out there in this situation or one like it.  And then there was the time someone purposefully deflected his own ball during a major, but that's very different too. The only time I can recall a ball I hit hitting another player or their equipment was ages ago -- over a decade and a half ago.  I had a 3' putt for an 89 and someone (a random pairing, not someone I knew) decided it was a good time for goaltending practice.  That wouldn't fall under this rule, though (and it wasn't in a tournament anyway). Thanks for continuing to share these, Dave!  I always find these interesting.
    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
    • Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.
