When it greenlit its new golf series 'Full Swing,' Netflix was hoping to build something like the next 'Drive to Survive'—then a controversial new Saudi...

Interesting GQ article on Full Swing (2023). I haven't finished it yet, but thought it was good enough so far to share

During my six years away from golf, I actually spent time rehabbing with Brooks Koepka, when he was ranked number one in the world. We had the same doctor team at that time though I learned later Brooks has many doctors and trainers.

What they say about his personal struggle is accurate from what I observed. Anyway, that article previews some cool things that might mean the documentary series, which will be eight episodes, is entertaining. Who knows though. Fingers crossed.

My wife's cousin more specifically. He is a sound guy that helps record some of the footage. He has sent us pictures of himself taken at Fitz's house and BK playing basketball that were taken during the recording.  I want to say he went to Italy with Rory.  I think he went to the Open. He didn't make it to our house for Christmas like usual, so I didn't get to ask him more about it. He is moving back to Columbus from NY soon. Maybe I can talk him into letting me carry gear for him at the Memorial if they are still doing it this year.

Being as big of fan of "Drive to Survive", I hope "Full Swing" works. I am, however, going in with low expectations. Not sure if this will work as well as F1.

Like DTS, I think for already knowledgeable golf fans, it'll be annoying sometimes. I've heard they tell you what "making the cut" means and what a "birdie" means more than a few times, for example.

I'm totally going to watch this, but I feel like the official trailer is overselling the drama a bit.

I've heard mixed things. I think this won't be "for" golf fans. But we'll see how much it can add to non-golf fans or to get them interested. I plan to watch with my wife.

I would not expect this to be aimed primarily at existing golf fans, but written to hit a wide audience. It’s Netflix after all, not The Golf Channel. They want it to appeal to as many as possible, and that means they’ll have to do some basic explaining that every golf fan knows.

Not that it won’t be of interest to golf fans.

I’ve read comments about LIV not being a major storyline, but certainly not left out either, and that some players are surprisingly open and honest on that and other subjects.

I am looking forward to this. I have been watching Break Point, the one they did on the 2022 tennis season, and it is pretty good.

I'm seeing what F1 fans say about Drive to Survive.

Because this episode is about Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth… you fail to get almost any real context. The story focuses in a big way on the PGA Championship that JT won, but doesn't even really mention the other majors except to point out that there are four bigger tournaments a year because the PGA is one of them.

I appreciated a little of the behind-the-scenes look at things, but… 50 minutes of it? It was a lot, and not terribly interesting. Nobody said anything interesting, nothing you didn't already know about happened… you didn't get to know Jordan and Justin much better at all.

I give it a B-.

But I'm not the audience. Thing is, though, I'm not sure this will really captivate non-golf fans either.

I was planning to have my wife watch these with me, but I don't know if I want to subject her to them if they're going to be this flat.

The first episode is not worth rushing to watch. It’s the worst of the series, IMO. It will likely (appropriately) lower your expectations for the series.

Hopefully he's right.

I kind of wish I didn't stay up to 12:30 last night watching the opening episode. I thought it was just OK as well. Though, I was trying to remember that PGA championship. I guess the only good thing is, it tries to introduce golf as not this old man's sport, but it has athletes. I appreciated seeing the grinding part of it a bit. Besides that, I could care less about the relationship between JT and Spieth. I can not relate to that really, so it fell flat for me.

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
    • I managed to knock off a 3, a 13, and a 15 a couple of weeks ago. The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
