The Club(s) That Changed the Game for Me

Here is another of the week-end golf group conversations that usually don't really mean a whole lot. So the four of us got into a conversation about the first piece (or pieces) of golf equipment that really made a significant difference in your game. 

Kevin: "The biggest difference maker for me when I got a great big bertha driver. Hit it straighter and longer. Made me a much better player."

Frank: "I would say for me it was I bought my Ping anser 2 putter. I still use it. Enough said."

Me: "This one is easy for me, Ping eye 2 irons (red dot). Really turned my iron game around. I could miss shots and not be in too bad of shape. Made the game much easier for me until I really learned how to hit irons."

I honestly think lessons from @iacas and Evolvr have made a far bigger impact on my game than any club.

When I got back into golf around 5 years ago and started taking it much more seriously, almost all of my equipment was from the 1996-2003 vintage, and some clubs even older than that.

I think the modern hybrid and fairway wood/driver technology has made the biggest difference for me with regards to a club helping my game.

I'm not sure about wedges/irons. I know there have been some advancements in irons too, but I still see them as a hunk of metal at the end of a stick, modern technology or not.

But like @boogielicious said, deciding to take lessons is what really had the most profound benefit for my scores, and it is hard to separate the effect of technology improvement and swing improvements.

I think hard work and practice for me made the biggest difference in my golf game, more so than any individual equipment purchase. I will say it made a big difference for me going to a blade iron from the more game-improvement cavity backs I had played prior.

Yea...me too.  Our conversation was about what piece of equipment made the biggest impact  on our games. I also went from the cavity backs to more of a blade iron (although I think they call them "player distance irons").

Speaking specifically about equipment - I went from the Nike Vapor to the Ping G425 Driver/3W/Hybrids - and I would say they made a huge difference for me.

While I also upgraded from Nike Sumo Irons and a low end putter to Ping G410 irons and a ping putter - they have made differences - but how much is it myself taking it more seriously now than I ever had before and playing way more rounds a month than ever before - or the equipment - hard to say. But I would say with certainty that I feel the long clubs being upgraded to this decade has made a big difference.

I would have to say finding the Mizuno MP line.  I just really get along with them, both blade and cavity.  Have bagged the MP33, MP32, MP52, MP25, MP20 mb… 

 I was talked into the Ping G5 irons when they came out against my better judgement.  Gave them a shot for a year, but could not get comfortable with them (too much offset and awkward at address).  Picked up a used set of MP33 and the rest is history (sold the G5 to a friend who totally got on with them, so a good win win).

For me the first time was when I got my Cleveland HiBore driver.  Before that I had wooden woods and then bought a Slazenger set of used D, 3W and 5W very cheap.  The HiBore driver was easily the most consistent driver I had and it was pretty accurate

I always say my rangefinder is my best club and rarely misses. 

I have to think the blended Titleist 735 CM irons made the biggest difference. They were blended blades to cavities and while forgiving to a degree, they demanded solid contact and would reward good play.
