Why do all the tour players wear something on their heads?

The big bucks in sponsorship are for the guys in the TV and print commercials. Just wearing the hat is small potatoes except for guys just off the Nationwide or Tour school. Later in the summer, 1975 on, when weather was really hot Nicklaus and others frequently had headgear on, usually a visor. Given that more of the players are health concious these days, nobody worried about skin cancer before 1970, I put more stock in the health and heat protection benefits.

Is to make more endorsement dollars with all those extra logos?

I think it is about the all mighty dollar. By the time I get to the big dance, I will have a caddy and a gal that follows him that does nothing but wear my sponcers logos.

Did you see that Japanese guy wearing a cowboy hat last year in the PGA evets? It's kinda cool. I think someone needs to wear a beret or something to spice things up.

My grandfather never wore a hat except to a ball game and maybe fishing. My dad will wear one ocasionally and always to a ball game, hunting or fishing...pretty much any outboor activity. Me, I wear one almost all the time except for work and anything I cant wear tennis shoes. I think it is also very much a generational thing.

Same reason they have logos on the front, sleeve and collars of their shirts.....$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!
That's a part of the PGA Tour that irritates me these days. Every time I see a player interview, I feel like I'm watching a commercial. I'm constantly distracted by trying to figure out things like what the hell "KPMG" or "AEGON" mean. Hey Mickelson and Zach Johnson...If you guys are going to wear logos on your heads, at least endorse companies with acronyms that we can decipher.

KPMG is a big consulting firm. If you have an accountant in the family, ask them about the company: I promise you, they know.

Aegon is an insurance / pension company. They have ads in golf magazines periodically. A year or so ago - before Zach Johnson won the Masters, by the way - they had print ads with various people saying what they wanted to do upon retirement. Zach's stated goal was to "play golf ... for fun."

Golfers wear hats because squinting in the sun doesn't look good on TV. :)

I cant wait for the day when golf turns into a NASCAR type of thing. Where the players are wearing jump suits with all the sponsors on them, and the post rac.. I mean round interviews they will have a coke or pepsi in thier hand and take a drink every other word.

You guys are aware that the PGA Tour has policies on how large logos can be, where they can be placed, etc. right? The PGA Tour basically can't become like NASCAR.

I’m watching the Masters and it’s completely overcast. Everyone still has on the hats with a huge logo on the front, a logo on each side, a logo on the back and for good measure and little logo on the strap that adjusts the hat size.

What separates this from NASCAR? No logo on the top?

I said the PGA Tour has restrictions on where and how large logos can be. Have you seen any 10" logos today that cover up the entire front chest of any players? How about the entire back? Or an entire sleeve?

NASCAR cars are completely covered in logos. Golfers really aren't that bad, in comparison. Also note: the PGA Tour's policies carry no weight at all at Augusta. It's not a PGA Tour-run event.

Look at Steve Flesch’s hat. Jeff Gordon would be proud.

Today’s winner of the endorsement shill belongs to Brandt Snedeker. The mongo Bridgestone “B” on the front of his visor, with the Bridgestone logo on the sides and some sort of logo on the strap. And then his shirt: Adidas logo on each sleeve, one on the front, some sort of logo on the collar and the 12” Adidas’ stripes across his back is a nice touch.

It’s a damn shame the class and mystique of the Masters is getting cluttered up with this crap.
They make sure every blade of grass is in place and then some clown covered with 9 logos steps up to the tee

im not sure you can call brandt snedeker a clown..

nonetheless...i disagree. These players are endorsed, and the vast majority of the logos look fine...not overly intrusive, not so small you cant see them... pretty well sized. I simply cant see how you could compare these advertisements with those of nascars..

I think its style.
the clothes they wear would look "incomplete" without a hat.

whio knows?
we'll just have to ask them.

BINGO!!! Mickelson a few years back used to play without a hat. It was rumored that is forehead was hotly contested and worth upwards of $10 million a year. He signed a contract and bang all of a sudden he has on a hat every tournament. Phil got paid!

    • I would say your back nine is the second nine you play that day. It's part of what makes getting some of those holes tougher. Or, if 18 holes are played pretty often, out of A, B, and C, and you often play A and C, A is the front and C is the back, regardless of the order you play them in. That way not birdieing C #7 isn't overcome by birdieing the easier A #7 on a day you played it C-A instead of A-C. But, at the end of the day, nobody really cares except yourself.
    • Day 128: played 9. Nice little even 9, with 2 birdies and 2 bogeys.
