You have to wonder what he was doing with the stuff on his driver face. Basically, he had this on his driver face, right?

Yea, that looks to be like white out, nail polish, or maybe the paint you use for miniatures?

That does look excessive.

They said that his "club guy" had put that on there to help Hideki with his alignment.  More here:

Matsuyama was disqualified from the Memorial during Thursday's opening round at Muirfield Village in Ohio.

Well that's just dumb. That's not exactly a difficult rule to understand. Or a relatively unknown rule.

It was my assumption that you just don't put stuff on the face of a club. I guess the right amount of paint is allowed since club makers sometimes paint grooves white. Yea, that was just dumb to do.

No kidding. Apparently the stuff was applied by one of his "equipment people" who also surely should have known better.

Assuming this is the correct rule, am I interpreting correctly that the issue isn't so much that he marked the club with a visual indicator, but that the markings could influence the movement of the ball?  Or is it simply the fact that it was marked in an area greater than the specified 0.375 inch square?

d. Decorative Markings

The centre of the impact area may be indicated by a design within the boundary of a square whose sides are 0.375 inches (9.53 mm) in length. Such a design must not unduly influence the movement of the ball. Decorative markings are permitted outside the impact area.

Hasn't he been doing this for years? This is a picture of his 3 wood from 2017. I don't understand why this is all the sudden a problem?

I read Hideki indicated the paint was an alianment aid.

It’s simple: you can’t put foreign material on the club face. See also the GC Quad stickers another pro was penalized for failing to remove.

In my opinion the player has the ultimate responsibility. The penalty is on the player.

The freaking equipment rep is the one who put it on there to begin with. It falls on all of them.

Silly to even use it at a tournament. Nonsense micro-tinkering.

yes it does...   it's just like having too many clubs in your bag..   there has been a couple pro's who've gotten penalized for it

    • Day 312 - Better finishing position, fuller backswing, PRGR to see how swing speed was.
    • Going to a Friendsgiving tomorrow and I am bringing a no-bake cheesecake. I make the crust too big, but I think it turned out good. The filling is really good.
    • Sure, but how was your alignment? 🙂 Day 53 - 2024-11-22 Mirror work after getting back home. Wife is a superstar for her career/job/whatever.
    • I would say your back nine is the second nine you play that day. It's part of what makes getting some of those holes tougher. Or, if 18 holes are played pretty often, out of A, B, and C, and you often play A and C, A is the front and C is the back, regardless of the order you play them in. That way not birdieing C #7 isn't overcome by birdieing the easier A #7 on a day you played it C-A instead of A-C. But, at the end of the day, nobody really cares except yourself.
    • Day 128: played 9. Nice little even 9, with 2 birdies and 2 bogeys.
