Queen Elizabeth R.I.P

Waiting to here if my course is closed for the funeral. As it happens I wouldn't play that day as a matter of respect. As most of you are USA based, I wondered what the reaction is over there ?

My reaction? A 96-year-old figurehead with little actual power died.

I understand QEII is like your country's "grandmother" and that's sad for you, but… meh. She was 96. She never really worked a day in her life. She lived a life of luxury, and even with that, didn't treat members of her family all that great. I recently (re-)learned of Nerissa and Katherine.

The fact that nobody (until now) started a RIP thread says a lot about how QEII is viewed in the U.S., I think.

Nobody here "dislikes" her, per se, we're just… meh.

I am indifferent about it. My friend mentioned it and I thought, we’ll 96 years is pretty good. 

I hold not attachment at all. I never was one to car about British royalty like it was a reality TV show.

I am saddened for your country's loss. I don't think being the Monarch for 70 years was all a sleigh ride and I probably have a different view of what constitutes "work" than some do. In any event, she seems to have served your country well in her role and I'm sure most of ya'all will miss her greatly.

Some friends of mine are really sad about it and I have old workmates in England, so I feel for them. She lived a long life.

Yes she lived a long life. She did in actual fact work very hard, and spent spend hours each day in her office, as well as attending numerous events. That may not be work as you see it, but it isn't too dissimilar to that of a President. You only have to watch UK TV to see the thousands of Americans who have flown over to show their respects. God Save The King

I wasn't comparing their work, I was comparing their LEVEL of work,  and I suspect despite the Queen's health, she still had her marbles and was capable of dressing herself 😀

The fact is I believe your president probably works very hard, as does our monarch and prime minister. Whether you or I like them or agree with their policies is irrelevant

Well I’m your side of the pond, and whilst I feel the Queen was deserving of respect and was clearly dedicated to her position, now would be a good time to have a discussion about down sizing the monarchy and removing a lot of the undue influence it wields.

Not sure what influence they really have now, but I agree with downsizing

Most of what I have read is that current money will still be circulated and they might change it at a later time.   I believe the UK is looking to begin to remove existing currency and replace with something new.   It'll take a long time.

I think the better comparison is to that of a President in some parliamentary-type governments. For instance, in Israel, the President is a formal head of state, but has essentially no power. The Prime Minister is the one with political power.

Seems like a great time for Canada to heavily scale back on printing money and move to electronic payments like Sweden. Only 6% of transaction there are still in cash (vs. around 11% in US).

I turned on the broadcast of the BMW tournament this weekend and the first thing I saw was all the players lined up with their heads bowed in a moment of silence. I thought it was a moment of silence in respect for the dead in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Then the announcer came on and said it was for the Queen. I guess it all depends on what side of the Atlantic you're on.

As previously stated you have to honor or respect a 96 year old figurehead who spent that much time on the job. one hopes she left the world better than she found it!

However, as part of the monarchy, which we separated from way back in 1776, and subsequently fought a war over, I have very little use for the Queen and the British empire.
I would like to think that many looked fondly upon the British monarchy because QE2 was likeable.
However one hopes that soon the British monarchy will not last past the next few Kings or Queens.
And having built its wealth by possessing and ruling other countries as well as its own citizens, one would hope that the British people follow the rest of the countries who have declared independence from the monarchy!

A few years ago my wife worked for a British company. Once at a company event I asked one of the British ladies how she felt about the about the Monarchy and she started gushing about how great it was. Another British lady standing close by couldn’t believe it and started shedding the Monarchy. After a few minutes, when the two started getting loud, I eased away.
