This  is  certainly  one reason golf ratings are  plummeting

Nonexistent negotiations and missed opportunities for reconciliation between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf have the sport stuck in place.

"Golf’s moment of truth is here, and the sport is badly flailing. Half the sport’s best or most notable players play on one tour, half on the other. They all only come together at the four majors — the next one, the PGA Championship, tees off next week — and then spiral off into their own tournaments, cashing massive checks in front of rapidly dwindling audiences."

Here  is another reason. Xander Schauffele hit an unplayable shot  on his  last  hole but  instead  of taking a  penalty  he and the  idiot  official decided some  cable was  in the way(it wasnt) and  he  got to get a free  placement  of  his  ball with a  clear shot to the green. Soft players and enabling  officials are  helping  tank ratings. If  i were the  official it  would  be  take a penalty  or  hit it where  it  lies.

Same dumb schtick since joining.

No, that's not another reason.

Ratings dropped after the baseball strike years ago, too.

Also, Jim Nantz had reasons why he thought ratings were down (and would likely be up next year, LIV aside) on the NLU podcast from earlier this week.

Well color  me shocked!! Now why in the world would Jim Nantz be hoping ratings will be  up?

One thing baseball just did to make the  games more watchable was to install a  pitch clock and speed  up play. The PGA should  learn from this and start  issuing  penalties instead  of  meaningless warnings for  slow  play.

Same dumb schtick since joining.

That's not what I said. Read it again.

I wasn't talking about what baseball just did.

The PGA

The PGA is not involved with this. They run the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup.

I ran across an interesting new clip, Johnson Wagner went into that spot with the Referee who allowed the relief.  Apparently there was a perfectly reasonable shot to be made, as Johnson clearly demonstrated, so relief from the TIO was perfectly appropriate.

A perceptive rules question by Xander Schauffele’s caddie, Austin Kaiser, unlocked “dead zone” relief during the Wells Fargo Championship.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen the word “golf” and the phrase “moment of truth” collide in the same sentence.

When he broke up with Caroline he won like five events in a row, including two majors.

This didn't just happen Monday morning — this has been going on for awhile, and he won his last two starts.

I agree. this wasn't decided Sunday night. Maybe a weight was lifted off his shoulders a few weeks ago and got him more relaxed. I wonder it will be brought up in his presser tomorrow? I'd like to think out of respect they will focus on golf but some one will bring it up I'm sure.

Great comeback win for Scheffler after his PGA championship drama. Tough course. Interesting to see how players had difficulty holding greens even with short irons from fairways.

    • Thank you @Ty_Webb!  I hadn't thought about that it would increase when there's a need for the third shot, something that happens to me almost every time I play a par-5;  it's pretty rare (bordering on never, but not quite) that I'm on or even within 30 yards for my third shot.   But that makes a ton of sense:  to be on or near in regulation, I need to hit at least two good shots and one not-bad one, preferably three good shots.  Asking a professional to hit two good shots in short succession is nowhere near as tall an order.  I'll continue to try for a second no-six round, but your post really did help me with the not beating myself up part, and I'll continue to be happy towards this when I have only one six (and no worse) in a round.
    • Good topic. Couple of things to add. First of all, if you look at the plot of strokes to hole out vs distance, you can see how the curve gets a lot steeper between 200 and 300 than it is between 100 and 200. That's because at some point you breach the point where you can't get there anymore. If you can reach from 120 and 170 (as most can) then the difference is just between how hard the shot is. From 220 to 270, there's a pretty good chance you can get on or close from 220 but not reach at all from 270 and need a whole other shot to get the ball on the green no matter how good of a shot you hit. It's not a whole glaring shot difference mind you because not many greens are hit from 220 either, but the difference is bigger. This is a PGA tour player chart, but something analogous likely happens for 10 handicaps: There will also be something similar to that out at 450ish yards where reaching in two becomes unlikely. That's probably why you're seeing over 6 for score expectation for a 10 handicap on longer par 5s. 545 yards is a long way to go unscathed basically. Tour players eat the par 5s alive because they can cover that ground without getting into trouble. In a very simple fashion, the longer the hole the more chance there is to show how good (or bad) you are. One last thing - avoiding 6s is a good goal, but it's not all that easy. Going 18 holes without a 6 is not something that I do all that frequently. There's always a long par 5 floating around or a difficult par 4 that something bad happens on. For example there, I played a course I hadn't played before in US Senior Open qualifying recently. No 6s for 13 holes, then on 14 (long par 4 into the breeze) I leaked my drive a little right and it plugged under the lip of a fairway bunker. Had to play backwards and then was facing 220 into the wind and I made 6. It really wasn't that farfetched. One slightly loose shot at the wrong moment and you're done. As a 10, it's still a good goal to have, but I certainly wouldn't lose sleep over it. Rounds with only one 6 are pretty good too.
    • Day 43: unexpectedly got time to go to the range. Short but productive session. Filmed a bunch. Need to make sure my backswing is steeper on full swings, but otherwise getting better.
