This winter, I set up a golf simulator in my garage. I can play one of my local courses with a fairly realistic level of accuracy, and I am currently in the process of building another local course to add to the sim. This got me thinking that I can potentially play a lot of rounds that I can't post for my handicap, so my handicap my not match my skill level very well when it comes tournament time. Not only that, I can setup the courses I play with wind and conditions similar to what I might be playing in a tournament.

My questions - If a golfer uses a simulator to practice on a specific course before a tournament, does it give them an unfair advantage? Should this practice be considered a violation of the rules, especially if the simulation closely resembles the actual course? If a golfer consistently performs well on a simulated course, should their performance count towards their handicap?

No, no, and no.  I don't care how good the simulation is, it can't reproduce the actual playing of golf.  Uneven lies, long grass, uphill or downhill stances, hot or cold weather, there is SO much more to playing on an actual golf course.

NO, NO, NO and NO!
The long grass is simulated, which means it is an algorithm and not actual friction with the club.
I have also played simulators where I swear the wind over corrects and knocks 20 yards off my clubs.
The putting alone has no feel.

This is like saying you saw the Grateful Dead at Alpine valley because you watched the DVD Downhill From Here!
Or watched a Phish webcast instead of going to MSG.

Doesn't count toward your stats and either should a simulator!

Does it give you an unfair advantage to play the shots on a sim that you would play on a course? No, Hogan used to rehearse shots on the range. Once he took out his 7 iron because he said there was no 7 iron shot on that course. Sim, range, in your mind, or practice on the actual course, its all fair game.

Is it against the rules? No, because you can practice any way you want, including playing that course before the tournament everyday, twice a day. It is called being prepared.

Handicap? Never. It is practice.

Just piling on with “Team No”. Practicing on the sim can help you to a certain degree but it won’t reflect the reality of live outdoor play. I just played my first outdoor round and completely forgot that wind above the tree line can affect your ball path. (I had to chuckle with that). On top of the environment being way different there is also the psychological aspect of the game.

Playing a course on a simulator is like saying you rode the Tour de France on your indoor bike.

I would think that regularly using a simulator over the winter might give you a little leg up early in the season, but probably not much more than that.

By tournament time, everything ought to be pretty balanced out if you are playing a decent number of rounds.

A simulator cannot do a cold, hard shank the justice it deserves.

You could track Sim rounds using a Hdcp calculator as a comparision to
USGA Hdcp. It might be interesting to see the diff.

Indoor Sim leagues create indoor Hdcp's for only Indoor events.

Is the course you designed available on TGC-2019 or GS Pro?

NO all over the place. At home I practice with Skytrak and a fan to simulate wind but is still not even close to the course. Is an intermediate point between the driving and the course but still far far away.

There are really expensive simulators out there with slope and different kind of turf to simulate fairway, rough, light sand or heavy one. Despite that, they are still far away from playing the real thing.

    • Interesting take on Pacific versus Bandon Dunes. I tend to prefer Pacific but it's a little splitting hairs. All four are great courses and really fun to play! My order is: Old Mac Bandon Trails Pacific Dunes Bandon Dunes Though if a little cheating is allowed I'd give Trails a T1. Anyway, thanks for sharing!
    • Eh... what's he going to say? "Hey, I bought a new driver. It's 10 yards shorter and I hit twice as many OB now." Does he have any data to back up his claim? Or is he just going by what he saw at his fitting?  I've been using either Shotscope or Arccos since 2018 and if there's one thing I've learned is that it's the archer not the arrow. When I'm hitting the driver well, it goes far and straight. When I'm a mess, it's a mess.  If you were properly fit for a driver in the last (dare I say 10 years) 5 years for sure. I'd be surprised if you can get more than a couple of yards out of it by getting a new one. The COR rule has been 0.83 since 1998, with widespread and standardized enforcement since 2003. Obviously, the engineers can still optimize spin and launch and shaft flex and/or kick point. So there are things that can be done. But I believe the days of 10 or 15 yard gains are over... unless your current driver is unfit for you. (as @Typhoon92 mentions above.) If you were fit for your epic. You will likely see very little on course performance difference.  Having said that, I get a new driver every 2 or 3 years... Why? Because I like shiny things. So, if you want a new driver, get a new driver.
    • My suggestion to you is to take your driver with you and go to a golf store where you can hit the new Ping 440 AND your own driver side by side.  They you can decide.  Very simple test you can do for free. You have no idea ( and your friend probably doesn’t either) how old his old driver was, what loft it was compared to the new one, what shaft and flex he had in his old driver vs. the new one.
    • I might be inclined to try to figure out what is bothering them. Is it that their index is 12 but they're only getting 10 strokes? If that's the case then I think I would just point out that their handicap is being adjusted for the difference between par and the course rating. It's adjusting for this course being easier than typical for the par. Course rating being roughly what a scratch should shoot on a good day and par being the sum of the numbers on the card. The whole concoction (which Erik and Dave explained already) is simply a way to get everyone to play on an even playing field. So if everyone plays to their handicap, then they'll all have the same net score. The adjustments are there mainly for those instances where something more complicated is happening like playing different sets of tees, but still apply otherwise. It's also easiest to say "your handicap index is 12.4, which means you should shoot 10 over par to play to your handicap" rather than "your handicap index is 12.4, which means you should shoot 12.4 over the course rating after adjusting for the slope", which is a whole lot of gobbledygook to people who don't know how the system works.
