Total eclipses are pretty rare. They are usually visible at the poles, and this is only the 2nd one in the 21st century in the USA, and the next one won’t be for 20 years. It would always be worth it to me to stop and watch. I am almost 60 and had only seen partial eclipses until 2017. To see 1 in in totality, and another at 80%+ in 7 years is amazing!

I was under the impression that a total solar eclipse happens somewhere in the world once every one to three years.

A solar eclipse is an alignment of the Sun, the Moon, and Earth. On average, 2.38 solar eclipses of one kind or another occur each year.

It's very rare that they occur on my patio. But it does this year. ...

I’m going to need an Eli5 of this one. It says the Saros cycle is about 18 years? That’s not the only time when total eclipses happen, right? The last total eclipse just in the US was in 2017.

There hasn’t been a total eclipse on my patio in my lifetime, this one won’t be, and given the next one that’s going to hit NJ will be in 2079 it probably means I won’t witness a total solar eclipse without having to travel at some point.

Well, let me ask you this Mr. Smarty Pants.  If the earth is round then how can a level surface be flat?  If the earth is curved then how can anything be level?  As the earth gradually curves would not the distance between the earth and the flat surface gradually increase to the point that eventually the level item (Line, Road, etc.) is entering outer space?  😜

Should be shade 12 or greater to provide enough protection if you’re using a welding shield.

Last pic is great! Looks like someone shot a rocket through the fabric of space-time.

I ended up going to the dentist at 1:45. Got out at 3:15 and made it home just in time to catch the peak. It was only 90% here, though.

Northern Virginia is in about the 80% band.  I'll be on a golf course as a Rules Official for a local PGA chapter tournament.

So the MAPGA suppled eclipse glasses for everyone, players and rules staff both.  I got to take a few peeks between groups, and even at 80% it was pretty cool.  IT wasn't dramatic, not sudden, but it did get pretty dim, with just a crescent of the sun vizible.  The golf kept going the whole time.

We were @ 99.4% from what I read.  I did not have any special glasses so could not look directly at it.  I did notice it got darker and street lights came on and cross-walk lights seemed brighter but without the glasses it was rather lackluster.  Oh well, I will have another chance in 2044 but would need to go to Montana, North Dakota or Canada.

There’s going to be one in 2045, too.

NationalEclipse.com is your one-stop source of information on solar eclipses, including the next total solar eclipse...

I might even be able to catch this one with my DVC points to stay at WDW.

    • Something just popped into my head, based on your mention of the folks who "know the rules" but are generally wrong.  Another comment I read was "the Rules ALWAYS said.....".  When I come across those I often go to  www.ruleshistory.com to see if the rules ever said that.  You can find every (almost?) version of the rules since the first set in 1744.  Its fun to return to the conversation and say "You're a little bit right, the rules said that at one time, but that changed in 1984.  You've been playing under the wrong rule for 40 years!"
    • Hi, checking back in to see if any St. Louis area golfers get together for a round or three during the year.  I have recently dropped my membership in a local league this year to work on my game and meet other people.  I would love to hear from anyone that would be interested in meeting for a round in the St. Louis area.   Rick
