Average Distances - How Far Do You Hit Each Club? (And Don't Lie!)

More important questions might be what is your fairways hit percentage, GIR percentage, averaged distance of your first putt, percentage saves when you miss the green and average number of putts a round.  While knowing what your distance is with each club is important the value of being long is over estimated in my opinion.  Tiger won The Open (The British Open if you prefer) and only hit one driver.  LOL

Not to get into an argument in what is essentially a "how much do you bench" thread, but do you know why he could do that?

Because he of how long he hits his irons. His length was an advantage that he didn't even need to use a driver to win. A shorter hitter would have needed to use driver for the same tee shots.

I would argue that his accuracy with iron Vs driver was what made the difference, but concede that Tom Kite or Mike Weir would not have had this option open to them. I won't argue that having distance, as Tiger does, isn't a good thing if you can keep in under control. Sure a lot easier to have good numbers in the statistics I mentioned if you're hitting a wedge Vs a 7 iron to the greens.  But my point was that Tiger gave up that distance, even though he is pretty good (or used to be) with a driver, to ensure his ball was in the fairway.  He apparently did this because he knew in this situation it was more important to be in the fairway at 280 yards than in the rough at 300+ yards.  At the time Tiger was the undisputed best golfer in the world so giving some thought to his tactics on the course might make sense for we less gifted golfers.  Maybe I was just trying to say it really doesn't make a lot of difference how much you can bench as long as it is adequate for the task.

I can keep up to my buddy's driver with a 3-iron, so I often hit 3-iron or hybrid when he's hitting a driver. I hit the short grass more often and when it's a driver hole, I have a short to mid-iron into holes he can't reach. Length is an advantage . . . ( assuming I'm not hitting 3 off the tee ).

No, not really, shorter clubs go longer for their given loft.  They are more forgiving, thus the average goes up.  The law of diminishing returns applies, your numbers are about right for your handicap.

A couple of interesting articles for those wondering about the posted distances:

Well, its been a mix as of late, but just yesterday I hit a 7 iron 191 yds on a golf simulator (175-180 consistently). I certainly hope it's accurate lol.

Those are my 2010 stats at 34 years old in Texas using a uPro GPS with the shot mark feature.  Not all of them have a lot of samples, some of them are more into the wind and some more with, etc.  i.e. the normal statistical measurement problems.

Update:  Blowing these away by about 15 yards per club 3 weeks after two key lessons and getting better, and longer by the day.  Might be too much distance now, unless I can harness the power.  Muwah hah hah!
