Make sure your grip is right. The grip impacts so many other aspects of the swing that you need to have it right. My game was all over the place to start this year, last week someone linked a video explaining how most people do the interlock grip wrong and I found I was one of them. As soon as I adjusted my grip my consistency improved dramatically and I felt much more comfortable with my swing.

Hogan stressed the proper downswing order is. Hips Shoulders Arms And finally the hands taking a more passive role. This should give the player a better sense of the required lagging action.

My ball striking really improved when I was told by a friend to stop trying to smash the ball. I generally have a decent swing, but my mechanics go to shit when I really lay into it. Now when I play, I look at the shot, figure out what club I should need, then I club up 1 and do a nice easy swing. My miss hits have gone down substantially.

I'm sure its been said, but my number one tip is that there is no number one tip. No one thing will make you a better golfer. Only hard work on every aspect of your game can do that.

In the Ogio Kingpin bag:

Titleist 913 D2 9.5* w/ UST Mamiya ATTAS 3 80 w/ Harrison Shotmaker & Billy Bobs afternarket Hosel Adaptor (get this if you don't have it for your 913)
Wilson Staff Ci-11 4-GW (4I is out of the bag for a hybrid, PW and up were replaced by Edel Wedges)
TaylorMade RBZ 5 & 3 Fairway Woods

Cobra Baffler T-Rail 3 & 4 Hybrids

Edel Forged 48, 52, 56, 60, and 64* wedges (different wedges for different courses)

Seemore Si-4 Black Nickel Putter

It's also known that without the 100's or 1000's of hours of practice that Hogan put in, his swing would not have worked, even for him. Β Not saying that your tip is a bad one, just that most of us will never have the time and self discipline to swing like Ben Hogan.

Video. High FPS. Learn self diagnosis from others who know what they are doing and looking at videos of good players. I was lazy and got away from this and realize that I was doing myself a great disservice because for awhile, my camera was gathering dust.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

Partially right. A grip will tend to cause certain movements to become easier in the backwswing and through impact, but its marginal at best. The grip is meant to be a way to fine tune the final product of the swing to get the impact conditions right. This is verified because there are a wide range of gripping the club, so no one way is right or wrong, as long as it works with the swing.

Not really. Β Starting with a good grip makes everything else easier. Β I'm not talking about Vardon vs. interlock vs. ten finger. Β I'm talking about basic hand position. A grip which is too strong or too weak requires sometimes awkward adjustments in the swing because it tends to put the player in a poor position in the back swing. Β Such compensation can result in inconsistent ball striking. Β A good grip can minimize other inadequacies in one's swing. Β One of Harvey Penick's first moves with a prospective student was to hand him a club grip first. Β How the player gripped the club told Penick a lot about where he had to start with the lessons.

Most players will never make good contact with the ball if they have a poor connection with the club.

I see what you're saying, but to say "Get your grip right " is probably not the best way to word it. There is no "right" grip. If you start watching tour players, there are a lot of different grips, but they do have a lot of things in common. So maybe the best thing to say is "Learn a good grip".

To the OP, practice, practice,Β practice,Β practice,Β practice,Β practice,Β practice....I can't say it enough. I'll let Allen take it from here.

Think about your current shot. Not your last shot, or the next hole, or your score. Just what you want to do with your current shot.

Ok explain to me what a good grip is?

Too Strong?, how about Zack Johnson, has a very strong grip, says the V's on his hand are pointing to the right of his right shoulder. He's known as one of the most accurate drivers and wedge players in the game. Won the Masters.

Too strange, how about Jim Furyk, plays with a double overlap grip?

Here's a stranger one, what about the guy on the Big Break a few years ago, he had a cross handed grip, right handed golfer, had his left hand low? He played good enough to compete with guys who were trying to get an exemption on one of the mini tours. Meaning he was close to scratch or better.

Yes, also Harvey told a story in his book that one of his students looked at his opponents grip, it was a mess, horrible. Yet that guy took Harvey's student to the wood shed that day in a golf match? Harvey basically said that you have to own your grip to play good golf. So even Harvey agrees with the fact that gripping the club comes in many shapes and forms, as long as it works for you its ok.

Harvey is pretty much wrong. Sorry to say. What if Harvey saw Furyk, or Zack. To go and say, "Ok your grip is this, you must be a shit golfer," is horrible advice. Golf is a big picture game. You must master the smaller pictures, but to define the big picture by one component is absurd.

What if a person struggles hitting with a neutral grip, what if it throws off his mechanics, explain to me why he shouldn't change his grip to help his swing. If your logic is that a good grip will set up the swing, then what if that grip you want to put on them messes up the swing. Are you willing to take your own logic on how a grip sets up the swing and admit that certain golfers need an extreme grip to play golf, because it sets them up for a good golf swing like you think a neutral grip does?
