Working on bunker shots, focusing on distance control.

Working on chip-putting with 9 iron from 1st cut.

Working on ball striking accuracy.

Wow, I didn't know it was 14 months ago I posted it.  Since then ....

I got good at bunker shot and stopped practicing to work on ball striking.  It got worse and is back on my practice regimen.  2 steps forward, one step back.

Got good at the chip putting with 9i & 7i.  They have been my best weapon around green.

Currently, working on getting rid of flipping.

I need to get better with my irons.  When I pure them it feels so good but I just can't do it consistently.

Anybody got any good iron drills?  I know its part of my swing but thought some of you may have some ideas.  I need help hitting down on the ball.  I have always been a picker in golf - no divot.

For me, driver & hybrids take care of themselves - strongest part of my game.    Putting is what it is & will always hold me back - practice doesn't relate to the course at all for me, so I just make the best of it.

This is a transitional year for me ... I really need to put in the time & work on full shots with mid irons, short irons and wedges - leaving way too many long lag putts.

Chipping - need to find a chipping area to practice this year, even if I have to drive a distance - I find it's so hard to find a chipping area where i can grind it out & put in some serious practice.

Today I am going to be working on two things.

1. My putting stroke from 10 to 20 out from the hole.

2. My iron distances and trying to improve on my accuracy for my iron shots.

These are my two weakest points at this time.

I know I'm not really supposed to reply to this... But I guess if it's a stroke issue from 10 to 20 feet I guess you can work on it... but don't practice 20 footers in general... they have very little separation value... SV1 I believe

I had that issue too, with the no divot thing... Erik, Dave and Mike have a lot of videos on this issue... Go to purestrike5sk.com and look at SK2 and SK3...

So many things to work on! Hitting more fairways, and making a clean 2nd shot would improve my game immensely. I hit too many fat shots, especially after I've made a good drive. Just starting lessons to get the fundamentals more buttoned down.

I would like to share this gem of a video i stumbled across, It's the way he describes the weight shift sequence on the downswing that hit home to me, the "backing into" the downswing before turning. It's certainly helped me, and I love the elvis accent too!

Thanks Hardballs I liked it as well

I've been practising the backing into the ball in the garden, practice swings, no contact! Just to get the feel of the correct weight shift, it's nothing new to what most people teach, but the way he translates it across has helped me create a feel and it's working! And as a Brit, I find his accent so easy to listen to!

Same here. Backing in seems much more natural than trying to consciously transfer my weight to my left foot. It seems artificial to try and bump to the left but this makes it easier.

Right now I am trying to improve my rhythm. A pro told me that I am thinking too much in different positions of the swing, but I need to put it all together in a fluid movement, a REAL SWING.It is funny when you hit the ball without thinking (= fluid movement), how lag seems to happen, and how the chiken wing tends to disappear. In this sense, I´m trying to do 'dynamic' drills....

However, all my golfing life, I´ve been making a pause in the top of the bs,and this helps me a lot to make good strikes. Maybe, I need to eliminate this little stops...

I recommend using tour tempo. I have that problem. Everything looks good in the different positions but now I need to put it all in a fluid motion. Tour tempo makes you forget everything and follow the beats. I noticed a huge difference with timing it all in. I practice for a hour and a half slow motion in all my positions and at the end spend 30 mins working on tempo.

Found his videos helpful too. Think he is one of the underrated, very high quality video posters out there.

Currently working on waking the full swing muscles up for the season. When I get back on grass I want to work on lowering full swing short iron flight a bit.

Man...I wish I had your skills w/ driving! That is always the scariest thing for me...so far, I've just been lousy at it, and the fact that I often lose balls on certain holes due to my bad driving makes me even more paranoid. :/

Putting and shorter iron shots are actually my strongest, most reliable stuff. It's the far away stuff that gets me!!!

Going back to my original swing. Somewhere along the line, I thought a 'flatter' swing would get me back my little draw and distance... Stuck with it for 2 seasons to try and gain the muscle memory. When it's on, it's ON... Unfortunately- it isn't 'on' enough. Way too inconsistent and costing me strokes. Super snap hook or ballooning slices more times than I like. Also shortened the swing for control (so I thought) and that seemed to have cost yards as well. Last few range sessions (after a disastrous couple of rounds in Florida) I channeled my 16 year old self and tried to get that old swing back. A bit more upright, with higher hands at address. Also a slightly quicker tempo. I had tried to slow down as well in order to gain control- never got the timing down to match up tempo with the swing. I suppose the years of playing have helped. I knew what I wanted and was able to start right in. Much more consistent so far. The misses are less "well travelled" and staying in the same zip code. It especially helped on the approach irons- flatter swing were a lot of pulls. Upright seems to keep them on line. And the 16 yo me is still in there, I can feel him. Although the hip rotation and shoulder turn aren't of a 16 yo anymore, distance is up by about 20-30 yards of carry. (field was a bit soft so no real rollout info) Give it another session or two and with playing, I won't have to think about it as much as I hope that kid sticks around.

Combining anti-flipping practice with increasing club head speed practice (with proper wrist release action, right arm "piston" move during downswig).  I believe I can get a few more yards out of my ball striking.

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
