Man how I wish the PGA Tour had Rule 88 like the LPGA. John Daly would finally get what he deserves.

What a sad sack of humanity he's become. I never believed - as much as I'd have liked to - that he was "recovering," but to go out there today and just mail it in and shoot 88 is an insult to his peers, his fans, and himself.

Daly's gone from tragedy to tragic, from pitiable to pitiful, and hopeful to hopeless.

Urban Dictionary definition for Rule 88: "If it exists, there's a furry version of it." Didn't realize the LPGA was that kinky... ( http://www.urbandictionary.com/defin...term=Rule%2088 )

Actually, from Googling around it seems clear that the rule is some sort of ban on playing for a year if you turn in a score of 88 or higher. Is there an authoritative definition of the rule somewhere? Is it an actual written rule? I tried searching the site and, unfortunately, 88 is not a valid search term...

How is that even possible for someone of his ability?

Honestly, I think he knew he was out of it yesterday and wanted to create some drama for his new TV show. You can really make some "reality drama" out of a terrible round like that. He was probably trying to make the most worse shot he could as it would be a great segue to the next scene after the commercial break. A real cliff hanger shot.

He shot a 51 on the front nine.

What a waste of talent.

Golf is a game in which the ball always lies poorly and the player always lies well.

He just has the demeanor of not caring whether he shoots well or not. His swings are lazy, with the exception of his driver. I don't know what happened to him but it's really sad. He is a hometown guy that I used to really pull for and now I can't even watch him play.

In my opinion that is part of what makes John Daly so interesting and intruiging. It's never out of the realm of possibility that he goes really low, or goes really high. Although I hate seeing people (one of my friends) adopt the whole over-swing, grip it and rip it, bomb and gouge attitude.

At this point, he's awfully close to the being the "worst guy ever and unwatchable." I've now crossed over from liking JD to not really caring one way or the other to full on disliking the guy. Spitting in the face of his talent like that makes him a joke, a disgrace. It's disrespectful to the game, his peers, and his fans.

I mean come on. Didn't Bobby Jones pick up once? Its noy like big john fell off the wagon again, he just had a terrible day.

Bobby Jones threw a club once too. So okay, the guy made two mistakes... then went on to grow from those, work hard, earn the respect of everyone, and WIN. John Daly's made hundreds of mistakes and hasn't learned from any of them. Ever.

I realize he played horribly today, but...

Did he struggle and try? I haven't watched any of his round, but on the front 9 he had 2 out of bounds shots, and 2 four putts... We all know how putting is a mental game, and if he struggled but was trying, I have no beef...

If he was standing there putting with one hand, while smoking a cig, I get your point...

Never heard of rule 88 till now.

A little harsh towards JD, don't you think? After all, with a little thought, we can find dozens of PGA guys who were successful in the 90's and haven't done anything in the 2000's (Parnevik, just as an example).

Golf is cruel, and there is no guarantee that if JD had done things differently with his life, that he would be more successful. Many guys have had their game desert them, and they didn't party, didn't drink, didn't embarrass themselves publicly. Yet their game is still gone. I say give JD a little slack. Given his Thursday performance, he knew that only shooting "lights out" on Friday would make the cut. When it became clear that he wasn't going to shoot anything near what he needed (a 10 on the par-5 killed him), I'm sure a loss of focus, along with anger and frustration, soon set in. He's human. At least he didn't fake an injury, or just pick up...

JD has more talent than any 3 of us put together. He could have had a Tiger like record if he had half Tigers will. He still could have a nice finish, but he really needs to get things together to do so. It's just sad for fans to see him make the same BS mistakes over and over.

I realize he played horribly today, but...

Keep in mind, he started the round on the back nine. Played reasonably well (about even par) until his eighth (17th) hole. Got on a bogey train and couldn't get off. I think he went bogey, double-bogey, then the 10 on a par-5 (2 OB drives!). After that, I think he was done...

I think the biggest insult is to the tournament organisers who give him an invitation. Let's hope that the other tournament organisers get the message and offer a place to someone who truly deserves or appreciates it.

Like you, I'm over him.

    • Day 470 - 2026-01-13 Got some work in while some players were using the sim, so I had to stick around. 🙂 Good thing too, since… I hadn't yet practiced today until about 6:45 tonight. 😛
    • That's not quite the same thing as what some people messaged me today.
    • Day 152 1-12 More reps bowing wrists in downswing. Still pausing at the top. Making sure to get to lead side and getting the ball to go left. Slow progress is better than no progress.
    • Yea, if I were to make a post arguing against the heat map concept, citing some recent robot testing would be my first point. The heat map concept is what I find interesting, more on that below. The robot testing I have looked at, including the one you linked, do discreet point testing then provide that discrete data in various forms. Which as you said is old as the hills, if you know of any other heat map concept type testing, I would be interested in links to that though! No, and I did say in my first post "if this heat map data is valid and reliable" meaning I have my reservations as well. Heck beyond reservations. I have some fairly strong suspicions there are flaws. But all I have are hunches and guesses, if anyone has data to share, I would be interested to see it.  My background is I quit golfing about 9 years ago and have been toying with the idea of returning. So far that has been limited to a dozen range sessions in late Summer through Fall when the range closed. Then primarily hitting foam balls indoors using a swing speed monitor as feedback. Between the range closing and the snow flying I did buy an R10 and hit a few balls into a backyard net. The heat map concept is a graphical representation of efficiency (smash factor) loss mapped onto the face of the club. As I understand it to make the representation agnostic to swing speed or other golfer specific swing characteristics. It is more a graphical tool not a data tool. The areas are labeled numerically in discrete 1% increments while the raw data is changing at ~0.0017%/mm and these changes are represented as subtle changes in color across those discrete areas. The only data we care about in terms of the heat map is the 1.3 to 1.24 SF loss and where was the strike location on the face - 16mm heal and 5mm low. From the video the SF loss is 4.6% looking up 16mm heal and 5mm low on the heat map it is on the edge of where the map changes from 3% loss to 4%. For that data point in the video, 16mm heal, 5mm low, 71.3 mph swing speed (reference was 71.4 mph), the distance loss was 7.2% or 9 yards, 125 reference distance down to 116. However, distance loss is not part of a heat map discussion. Distance loss will be specific to the golfers swing characteristics not the club. What I was trying to convey was that I do not have enough information to determine good or bad. Are the two systems referencing strike location the same? How accurate are the two systems in measuring even if they are referencing from the same location? What variation might have been introduced by the club delivery on the shot I picked vs the reference set of shots? However, based on the data I do have and making some assumptions and guesses the results seem ok, within reason, a good place to start from and possibly refine. I do not see what is wrong with 70mph 7 iron, although that is one of my other areas of questioning. The title of the video has slow swing speed in all caps, and it seems like the videos I watch define 7i slow, medium, and fast as 70, 80, and 90. The whole question of mid iron swing speed and the implications for a players game and equipment choices is of interest to me as (according to my swing speed meter) over my ~decade break I lost 30mph swing speed on mine.
    • Maxfli, Maltby, Golfworks, all under the Dicks/Golf Galaxy umbrella... it's all a bit confounding. Looking at the pictures, they all look very, very similar in their design. I suspect they're the same club, manufactured in the same factory in China, just with different badging.  The whacky pricing structure has soured me, so I'll just cool my heels a bit. The new Mizuno's will be available to test very soon. I'm in no rush.
