Working on a pale ale that I made for Christmas. Trying to finish it off to make room in the kegerator for the next homebrew.

Did you borrow a pair of your wife's panties to wear while drinking that manly concoction? :w00t:

Nah, but your wife lent me a pair of hers! :-P Chances are, if there's an umbrella in it, I'll love it...

Anyone have an old fashioned before? Might try one tonight but don't know if ill like it

old school...

you might go easy on the bitters, and have the bartender add a few more if too sweet. Some recipes have sugar, I guess, to offset the bitters.

Depends on the recipe and the bourbon

My dad makes mine … My bartender days ended about 35 years ago. Dad's didn't end - old school.

Do you like whiskey? If not, it probably isn't the drink for you.

Yes, but it's whiskey over ice with sugar and bitters and a twist And. I can't forget the maraschino cherry And if you want to make it more palatable, my dad used to add a little 7-up

I don't see your point. I was only telling the OP that if he doesn't like whiskey, then he likely won't care for an Old Fashioned. After all, it's a whiskey cocktail.

Okay -- my point is that it's only whiskey-based.

Add sugar, bitters, cherry, and a twist ... and if it's too old school, add a dollop of 7-Up/Sprite, and is it anything like whiskey?

If you don't add a little 7, then I don't go for it... tried it both ways.... those guys in the '40-50's were hard core.

Not a big deal. If he likes bourbon in the least, he ought to try it old-school with the 7-Up ready on the side, and pour lightly to taste

That's my point exactly. If you go into a bar and say "I'll take an Old Fashioned", you're probably going to get whiskey (likely bourbon), bitters, simple syrup, and a twist. If you don't like whiskey, or if you don't like it when it's particularly strong, then you add something else, like Sprite or 7 Up.

So my point to the OP was, be sure you like whiskey before you walk into a bar and ask for an Old Fashioned. Even when mixed with other things, whiskey still tastes like whiskey, and a lot of people are turned off by it.

Agreed.
