Been working so haven't been around much...honey do's AND work...never ends.

Anyway, I did a non-scientific experiment when determining which ball to select for my Top Flite Staff Agreement for 2004. I used the Pro V1x as the "control" and took a sleeve of the Strata Tour Ace and a sleeve of the Hogan Apex Tour Black to our first hole. My experiment consisted of playing 5 holes and hitting 3 drives on each hole with each ball (except for #4 which was a Par 3). After hitting the drives, I gathered the balls and hit one approach shot with each from the 150 (8-iron) and two approach shots from the 100 (my sand wedge distance). The results:

Tee shots, the Hogan Apex Tour was routinely about 10-15 yards longer than the Pro V1x and the Strata Tour Ace was approximately the same distance as the Pro V1x.

Approach shots: The Hogan stuck like a cat and was about a club longer than the other two balls. The Strata Tour Ace spun just about the same as the Pro V1x and flew the same distance.

Once again, this was a NON-scientific experiment as I was swinging the club and obviously every swing is not the same (although I try).

Definitely good to know. I've got six dozen Pro V1x (Titleist made a shipping error and sent me 3-dozen personalized Titleists a second time), but I'll give the Hogan a try sometime soon.

Im a Pro V man from way back but the Callaway Black tour is a very impressive ball and is slowly making its way to my bag.

I would recommend the Precept U-Tri Tour, cheaper than Pro V's and similar perfromance . For two piece balls, my choice is Srixon AD-333 . Just my 2 cents.

I personally believe that the HX Tour 56 is the best ball of 2005, better than the Pro V1.

I get the Nike Tour Accuracy (Tiger's old ball) for $10 a dozen - brand new, so I play them a lot. I play th ProV1 a lot, but I don't pay for them. I also play the new top of the time Ben Hogan ball, and I like it. And for good measure I also play the Nike One series often. I don't pay for any of them because I always seem to either win them or receive them as gifts.

I love the HX Tour and the 56. I have bought a dozen of each ($40) but usually buy used ones from a buddy for $20 per dozen.

IMHO the best place to get balls are off of Ebay.

I second that. I never pay more than $25 a dz for top-end balls. You have to be ready to buy 4 or 6 dz to get a good price - but it's worth it.

LostGolfBalls.com I read the customer reviews and figured what the hell, Ill try 2 dozen ProV1's (2nd Quality) and they were like brand new. I examined these 24 balls closely and I swear I found 1 super small scuff on 1 ball only, the rest I couldnt tell they were played more than 1 single shot. Note I said 2nd quality, they have a first quality that they claim is perfcect but I found the 2nd's to be just perfect. $18 a dozen + shipping...I'll never buy new balls again, ever. Oh and there was zero noticable difference in distance, spin etc. as I assume they came from water shots at venues like Sawgrass or other quailty courses that collect thousands of ProV1's on a weekely basis.

I would check this site out for normal play, but for tournaments I would by brand new balls just b/c it would make me feel better :).

I have the Golf Digest MBNA Mastercard. I accumulate points which I redeem for golf balls. Consequently, I don't buy balls ( unless, you consider redeeming points for balls a purchase, which, from an economist's point of view, it is ). For my game, in cold weather I use a low compression distance ball, such as the Titleist DT Solo. In the blistering summers, here, I like the Titleist NXT Tour, which I find better around the greens, especially for distance control on putts. Both my swing speed, as well as my pecuniary sensibilities prevent me from considering the ProV1 and its ilk.

BTW, you can go to the Golf Digest website to apply for the MBNA card. I've had good luck with that company for several years and the redeemable points are a bonus. Hope this helps.
