I love to put everything out even the tap in from 6 inches.

However when I get paired with guys I have never played with before and the gimme a putt inside 2 feet I will pick up for the sake of speed of play.

Yesterday though I was playing with a guy who was trying to give me 3-5 foot putts. I didn't pick them up and continued to putt them, is that considered rude on my part?

Honestly, im all for etiquette, but I dont believe in 'gimmes'.. I putt out, no matter what. I've only had one complaint about it, and I kindly told him that my hole is done when the ball is in the cup. He also got pissed when I wouldn't sign his scorecard after the round, because he kept picking up putts as high as 2-3 feet out.

at the beginning just tell him or them that you want to putt everything out, and ask if they want gimmies or not. then they might wanna play your way too if it hits their ego right...they might see it as if u said... i putt everything out, are you good enough, too?

If it is not a tourney I say sign the card. It only hurts them. But I get your point too.

Rule 1-1 is easy enough to cite. If someone insists on offering you a 5' putt in stroke play, tell him how often players on the PGA Tour make that putt successfully. Then, put the statistic out of your mind, and putt.

Honestly, if he hadn't made a big deal about me putting out (seriously, its an extra 30 seconds), I would have signed it. But the guy was alone, behind me and a friend, and I was good enough to offer him to play with us, so he wouldnt have to play alone. He wasnt very good, worse than I was even, and spent the whole round bitching and complaining. He just really rubbed me the wrong way, and I was trying to be as courteous as possible the whole round.

Well said, it is your round afterall. Don't overlook the etiquette expected of them to respect your round. Its obvious you value that so you deserve the same respect in return. Just a guess but I bet the @sshole ratio is maybe 1:20. Maybe higher.

There should be an etiquette on his part to respect your desire to play out the hole. Etiquette doesn't and shouldn't go one way.

The whole speed of play thing has gotten out of control. You shouldn't sacrifice the integrity and fun of the game in order to get through a round in record time. Tapping in takes all of 10 seconds.

If I'm in the mood to putt out and I usually am, I often tell people that hearing the ball hit the cup is a confidence booster for me (its true) and for me makes the hole complete. I haven't heard anyone complain after that.

Short putts is not where time is lost on a golf course. I putt out everything, even one on the edge, waiting for a breath of wind to fall down.

Like someone said, everyone has the right to put the ball in the hole, etiquette goes both ways. How sad would it not be to hit four good shots on a par five only to have the joy of sinking the putt taken away from you. That is not how golf is played.

If someone use speed of play as a reason for gimmies, they need to evaluate the time spent on the rest of the course. Playing ready golf, always being prepared to hit when your turn comes up.

3 feet is not gimme range. I've missed enough 3 footers to know that for a fact. Missed two of them for pars just today, and I'm a very good putter if I do say so myself. As for tap-ins, I feel cheated if someone tries to gimme one of those. I like the satisfaction of hearing the ball go in the cup from that range, especially if it's for par or birdie.

I don't think it'll change even when my handicap trickles down but I LOVE the sound of the ball falling in the cup! That's why I've hit the dang ball in fact! To be denied that would certainly affect my calming that is the reason I play!!!! I am getting in the habit of holing everything out. Only time I have not is when we scramble with another group. If the other team says that's good, we'll pick up!

i've run into that a time or two. i always say "thank you, i appreciate it, but i'm one of these guys who just has to hole out every time." no one ever seems to have a problem with it, and they cease offering me putts afterwards.

I can see how that can get annoying. ;o)

BTW I don't give people putts on the course when I don't know them. They can take it if they want. But yeah it is rude to give someone a putt when you don't know them.

Agree 100% with this. The worst is when the "friendly" guy you got paired up with as a single not only decides your putt is good, but knocks it back to you before you even get there. Urrr...

    • Day 6: lighter session today after a long day. Just some mirror work and slow swings to try to get my feels down.
    • @Philip Belgium,  If I haven't already, Welcome to TST.  Your injury sounds serious and I hope you fully recover.   Thanks for sharing your story.  ..... each day get 1-2% better.   (A ray of sunshine and a positive outlook)
    • Day 91 (1  Aug 25) - Pre-tournament practice round today…had some great up and downs for par saves.  Rain came in this evening so it will be a totally different playing course tomorrow.
    • Jesus, when he keeps saying scissoring moment, ugh that is a horrible sounding phrase. Just makes me cringe. It doesn't help my mind went to Mr. Garrison from South Park. 🤣 If you know you know.  I think for the most part, golf shaft companies have gotten this figured out. They ask questions like, what tempo do you swing at. The whole scissor terminology sounds like they want to stand out a bit.  Yea, golfers load the golf shaft differently, and different bend profiles can help out. I do think swing speed matters as well. You probably want a golf shaft with lower torque if you swing faster.
    • Played 9 holes, shot a 39.  Kind of got around. Everything between the trees, so in play. Short game was rusty. Got to get back on that. Greens were stupidly slow because they got a lot of rain yesterday and probably couldn't cut them down. Usually in the summer they are firm and pretty fast for how sloped they are. Got to work on face to path a bit.
