Hello Sand Trap,
In the last 12 months I have installed thousands of grips using the air tool we make at PURE Grips. Please allow me to clarify a couple of points from this thread:
1- You can use air to install any grip.
2- You can use air to install any grip without tape, but many grips are now made with so little rubber content that I cannot guarantee they will stay in place. This is also a direct indication of how well the grip will wear. If it is not made from rubber, it will wear out quickly, lose tackiness quickly and will not likely stay in place without tape. These types of grips are sometimes the most expensive models, have not figured out why people are willing to pay so much for a grip that will wear out in 3-6 months! Anyway, our research shows that the grips that won't stay in place without tape are the same grips that commonly leave their users disappointed when they wear out too soon.
3-You can use two-sided tape and an air installation together, if you desire an added element of security. This is a good idea with many grips, but it is not required with PURE Grips. Grips like ours, that contain rubber, will expand when they are hit with the air. Once the grip is in place and the air is taken off, the force of the contracting grip combines with the tackiness of the rubber to hold the grip in place.

Saw this thread, thought I might be able to help. Thanks!

PURE Grips

Wes, you are selling grips and guns, and have done some research with your guns and other make grips. Why not publish what you learned about other make grips when installed with your guns? For instance, who makes grips that will stay on without tape. Golf Pride? Winn? Lamkin? Pure?

Because he's selling PURE Grips. Why would he talk about other grips? C'mon.

We'll be covering PURE Grips in tomorrow's Bag Drop and an upcoming review.

One thing I don't understand is without tape how do you build up a grip to an intermediate size (assuming there isn't a different grip for every possible size), or indeed stretch it out to narrow it slightly (without it springing back to its natural shape)?

I use Scotch blue painters tape. It isn't sticky, so a little bit of air causes the grip to come right off, but it still builds the grip up to the original diameter of a grip installed with double sided tape.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

My club pro uses double sided grip tape and wait for it.... UNLEADED petrol for the solvent. I thought it wasnt good to use petrol as solvent but he has regripped many of my clubs with 100% success.

Personally I wouldn't use gasoline because of its extreme flammability. The grip solvent I use is non flammable and actually smells sort of citrusy. Job specific solvent isn't that expensive. I wouldn't buy a compressor for regripping my clubs unless I had other uses for it as well. I can buy a lot of solvent for the price of an air compressor.

So we should all play Pro V1/V1x and wear FootJoys because they do so on the tour?

I think the #1 car company is Toyota, which should tell you enough right there.

Yeah, it's not like Yes! has been used to win major championships or anything... D'oh.

Blue painter's tape is cheap, and effective for building up size. If you install with air, once it is built up the way you want it you will not need to re-tape every time you switch grips.

I think this is a valid question, so I want to reply. We do not like the idea of talking bad about our competition, which is what it would sound like if we start calling out specific grips that are made with poor materials, and thus will not stay in place. It is amazing though, the more expensive the grip, the cheaper the materials seem to be. Great business model, I guess. We prefer to make a product that we hope our consumers will be happy to come back for more when it needs to be replaced. Thanks.

So there is no problem with how the grip hangs onto the tape compared to the metal of a steel shaft? I would assume that metal offers more friction than the tape, but if either works, great.

Bit inflexible and stuck in your ways, eh? I'm surprised you're using this newfangled "internet" thing?

FWIW I put a PURE Grip on my driver yesterday. Except for the loud squealing sound as the air blew out of the rubber (some of you know the sound I mean), the process took 30 seconds and the grip ain't budgin'. Oh, and the tape beneath my old NDMC? No stick at all. I don't know why people think the tape remains sticky for very long. It doesn't...

You should try a NDMC with the air compressor and no double sided tape or solvent, if you haven't already. I've heard that it works just the same as PURE grips.
