It seems when I go to play the front nine, my scores are sky high(+5 over par today). When I play 18, I do shoot high on the front nine, but make up with a few birdies on the back nine. Its like the front was a warm-up. Is this the same for any one else?

I used to be the same way. Play bad early, then much better later. There was a stretch I was in where the middle 9-10 holes was always my best. Now I am to a point where it doesn't matter.

That is why I always try and hit some balls before I play. All I really need is 15-20 balls and I am good to go. My last round I took half the small bucket and put them in my car for the next time.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Same for me, though I can't really vouch for it occurring all the time considering I have only a couple rounds under my belt. I guess I was just getting used to my swing again and such. :)

Not really. My issue is playing in the morning or the afternoon. I always struggle when I play in the morning and golf great in the afternoon. Not sure why?

Considering how I played today, Front 9 is usually better for me.

For me normally, I'm more consistent on the Front 9 (+1,+2,+2), and I'm usually not as consistent on the Back 9 (0,+3,+1,0,+2). In other words, I usually play it safe on the Front, and take more risks on the Back.

Losing balls is also big for me. Front 9 today, I didn't lose one ball. Back Nine I must've lost 10 balls. Crazy.

JML: I liked that answer. :)

My club gives members a "warm-up" bag. I usually arrive right on my tee time, or too close to actually hit a few balls beforehand. Maybe I will take advantage of a few free range balls tomorrow.

lol no thats basically how it is though
"most" of the time you will blow up on front or nine because the hardest holes are there lol.
i was in chicago and the course we palyed the 6 was the hardest 8 second hardest 9 3rd hardest
Obvioulsy my back 9 will be a lot better.
Usually the top 3 hardest arnked holes on the course are MUCH MUCH harder than 4 +

I am a slow starter, always has been. I am a solid finisher. Best example, last thursday, Heritage golf club in Hilliard Ohio, I go 53 on the front, shoot 43 on the back, OH YEA!!!

Today i got 5 over in the first two holes, finish 1 over for the next 7. I am just a good finisher..

it depends on the day in all serious. in tournaments i go super high on the front cuz the tee times are just too early
if i go to my home course i can throw up a score under par on the front or the back but on the back 9 the mental game seems to come into play much more.
when im playing for fun i tend to go low on the front then go into cruise control on the back because i think i can stop trying or i get lazy because i have problems focusing after short times

For me I can get tired on the back 9 and make my dumbest mistakes on the last 5 or 6 holes, so I'd have to say that the front 9 is probably what feels the best to me. However, when I look at the actual scorecard, the back 9 almost always has an equal or lower score compared to the front 9. So based on my actual scores, I'd have to say I play the back 9 the best.

The front 9 plays better for me, but most course designers will usually make the front 9 easier than the back 9.

The course I play most often is only a 9 hole course. Before I started hitting at the range before my round the first 9 always stunk. Now that I make it a point to hit some before starting play, they are much more even.

Great post. LOL Im on both sides of the aisle. I tend to flip flop on front nine and back nine.

Most of the time I play better the further I get into a round. The first 2-3 holes I haven't found the rhythm yet, but from there it usually just gets better. My speed on the greens also get better on each hole.

Golf course designers making front easier than the back, i don't think thats true.. Most courses i play are pretty split even.

    • He’s got to be the best player that’s never won a PGA-tournament these days.
    • Day 3 (August 13).  4' putting drill;  this is a modified version of the drill from LSW for short putting.   For context, in 2025, my strokes lost putting is more than 2 per round compared to the 15 handicap baseline, just on putts under 10'.  So that's a glaring weakness I think.  Anyway, so I set up 12 markers around a hole like a clockface, all coins, all face up.  I putt from each in turn, if I make it, I flip a heads over (or pick up if it's tails).  This means I have to make 24 putts eventually, ideally quickly.  It took me 38 attempts to do this, although 9 of the 12 coins were picked up either in the first or second go around.   Anyway, the baseline for a "90-golfer" (per Broadie description) is 37 attempts, so that's pretty good, but I'll keep trying to improve.  For anyone thinking about this, the number would be 30 for an average scratch player.   This was done on a real green at a nearby course's practice area.
    • Day 18: a little under the weather, so just some mirror work while watching TV.
    • That's not the right way to look at it, because you're not going to have a rating of 55 or something for even a 6500-yard par 72. There's a minimum rating (depending on the length), and then +s and -s to that. If a course has a bunch of +s and -s that even out, that doesn't mean the course rating is 100% the length. And what kind of math would it be if the course rating was lower than the formula: 103% length? 🙂
