Is there anything wrong with this? I choke down on all my irons and hybrids.... I still get 160yd 8i for instance. It just helps me feel tall over the ball and helps me with control. Also it encourages a more decending blow creating alot of backspin... Is there anything wrong with my thinking in theory

Not a thing wrong with it. I do it about half the time at least. If you pay close attention to photos you see of guys on tour you will see many guys do it. Anthony Kim does it on every shot.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

The only thing wrong is referring to it with the c-word. Call it "gripping down" and everything's fine.

i always choke down on all my clubs. 1 inch on the driver and roughly 1/2-1 inch on all irons and fairway wood. Not sure why, i'm just used to it.

Nothing wrong at all. I usually grip down if I need a bit shorter distance or need better control of the shot. I gain the most with it on the driver, as I tend to be a bit wide with it.

Makes the lie angle flatter and the swingweight lighter. If you do better with it than using your clubs at full length, then it seems logical that you need shorter clubs.

Another time to choke down:

You're in deep shaggy rough. If you choke down, you will hit the ball farther than if you don't.

Because of the shaggy rough, your feet will sink down to the actual ground, could put you a half to full inch lower than if you were in close-cut fairway. If the ball is nested in the grass, and you grip and swing normal, the club will hit the ball on the top half of the face, possibly causing a super-fat squibber.

If you choke down, this raises the bottom of your clubface enough that you have better chance at normal contact on the ball.

I think i'm gonna grip down on all my clubs til i'm 100% confident with them and slowly move back

Why would you want to move back when gripping down results in a better shot? Is it an ego thing?

I really only choke when I'm chipping around the gree or in the sand.

When you dig into the sand you can drop about an inch or even more sometimes, and if you don;t choke, you'll get way too much sand behind the ball.

My clubs are probably a tad short for me, yet I still grip down occasionally. It leads to some subtle stance and swing changes that all seem to boost my confidence when the wind is blowing or the course is really tight. In theory, I could get a few extra yards with my long irons without gripping down a shade, but solid contact and consistent distance is nice too.

I do it with my driver. it seems to keep me closer to the center of the clubface on impact but they probably aren't related. The best move I made with my Driver was not teeing the ball up high...

I grip down on every club since I am 5'-6"(ish) and gripping at the end of the club will put my hands too far from me and/or cause my stance to be too erect. With the correct posture, I am down about .5" from the standard length.

distance
i dunno
We'll see how it goes, all i know is it feels easier to turn when choking down since you take a more athletic stance than I normally would but when i take a more athletic stance gripping up a bit it doesnt work

  • 1 year later...

Actually i gained distance with my irons and driver. I use to have the club just in my hands, now i am choking down like 1-1.5 inches on the club. I've been flushing iron shots there exact distance i was hitting them before, in the driver i gained yardage. Before i had 255-260 carry, but now that has just jumped a ton, my last drive last night went 320 yards  (GPS measured, 370 to the hole, 50 yards left when i got to the ball). My old driver i had cut down, but it just doesn't feel right as choking down. I think its a swing weight issue, or something, but it works out to be a net gain of zero yard on irons, and a big gain on driver. But the big thing is accuracy, i hit 5 out of my last 6 GIR's last night.. Its worth a try for those who have been battling some contact issues, give it a shot, its worked for me.
