It also depends on the time of day you play.

Yeah, I only play in weekday mornings. Have nevered played a round on the weekend or past 4pm.

They play slow, but course is less crowded and they always let me play through.

Most of the $70 and over Clubs around here are now $46 since the recession. Seriously.

That $70 figure is the fee to play as a guest with a member, the course is far from semi-private. This course has a $40,000 initiation fee and is $10,000 a year.

And no those numbers haven't come down in the recession. Like I said, I live in a very wealthy town.

the only downside to playing by yourself is that no one is there to see that awesome shot or that crazy lucky break. And, no one believes your scores, lol.

Yup. I once had to flag down the cart girl just to tell her about an incredible shot I hit. It was 8am on a Monday that was supposed to have 4 inches of rain, but turned out to just be cloudy, and nobody else was on the course but 1 foursome.

The other downside is that nobody is around to help you find your tee shots. I've often lost balls that were very close to the fairway (first cut of rough likely) simply because I couldn't see it land and had nobody helping me find it. Brandon

I hate that. Losing a ball that is close to the fairway is so irritating

I once lost a ball that I was about 99% certain was in the fairway. It was hit directly into the setting sun, and I saw the line it was on on the right side of the fairway with very little sidespin throughout the first 3/4ths of it's trajectory until I lost sight of it. I was so stunned and spent about 10 minutes looking for it since nobody was in back of me. Really ticked me off.

I play by myself quite often. I can get away after dinner and the kids are taken care of. Its so relaxing to play a quick 9, ipod playing, enjoying the night.

I play 9 solo every morning at 6:30, off the course by 8. Avoids the crowds, the mowers and the hot weather.

Just finished nine holes on my own into the teeth of a 20mph wind and the last two holes pretty much in the dark. Awesome.

It sounds like a few of you loners listen to music while you play. That intrigues me, because I've done that a few times myself and wondered if anybody else has done it. I use my phone for my scorecard/GPS anyway, so I always have it nearby. Throw in my headphones and launch the Pandora app, and I can listen to music.

I typically only do this when I'm playing super-twilight as I tend to be in a super-relaxed mood. How often do you guys do this? Does anybody find it to affect their concentration?

I play mostly alone, work restrictions mainly. More often than not if I'm out I may hook-up with another single or 2-ball, tend to play better this way. Also if you're solo and it's quiet you can drop a couple of balls and have a few practice shots. I don't know about listening to music, you may not hear that 'Fore' until it's way to late!!!

I go to the course by myself all the time. Usually If I start out alone I'll catch up and join someone. Meet a lot of different people on the course.

Went and played a full 18 after reading this thread, had only ever played Par 3 course on my own before that.
I wasn't expecting to like it but I have to admit I loved it!
I played some of my best Golf of the year and ended up with my lowest score to date!
I found I was taking my time over shots and planning more than when I play with friends.
Looking forward to getting out on my own again soon.
Only problem is though I got my first ever birdie on a Par 4, had got them on Par 3 and 5's before but never a Par 4, now nobody believes me because there was no one there to see it! LOL

Yup. That's because when we play with others we spend more time talking in between shots instead of thinking about our next shot. That's one of the reasons I dislike playing with people sometimes. I played with a guy this weekend who wanted to talk about everything and/or give me a lesson in between every shot. I didn't play too poorly, but I definitely wasted some shots because of it.

The worst part about it was that I started off by myself. I hit my approach shot onto the first green and notice a guy teeing off on #2 just after I hit my approach shot. He takes off as I walk up to the green, then while I'm on the green I see a guy drive back up to the 2nd tee and wait there in his cart. The guy came back to wait for me so that he could play with me. I'm there to practice and work on my game, and he was there for social hour. I didn't want to be rude and say no thanks, so I just tried to get through it as best I could. Brandon

I do it from time to time. Nothing rude about it. If I am playing alone and just feel like playing by myself that day..then I will just let anyone know "I'm playing really slow and just working on some things" and they'll go on about their business.

    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
