What a ridiculous exhibition. Obviously, it meant a lot, we all know how much he wanted to win, we don't know what it's like etc. etc., but if that was your 12 year old behaving like that you'd be embarrassed. It's not uncommon for players who miss putts to stare at the ground and shake their heads just so the gallery know that it "wasn't their fault", but this was outrageous. What a jerk. The funny thing was that a few moments before they were showing some of his putts a while back athe the Wyndham, and he was doing it there too.
IF it was a spike mark, you can't do anything anyway, and he certainly wasn't looking at that spot before.

Very glad for Appleby.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Overton's a guy whose emotions run really high, but he still needs to find a better way to handle adversity on the course. He's had such a good year, it would be nice to find him a little more likable.

Me from the Appleby Shoots 59 thread:

Overton got totally screwed on 17, but his reaction was way over the top. I don't know what he was saying but I would be willing to bet it wasn't PG rated and he just went on and on and on..... just tap the next putt in and get over it.

He acted a lot like a baby. I know that was to tie for the lead with on hole left but, c'mon, act at least a little like you've been there. And he has been there, we've all gotten screwed over on the golf course.

I was a little surprised his caddie didn't step in there and say something to him. It just looked like he replaced the flag and let Overton keep whining to himself and to anyone that would listen. And maybe I'm wrong, but it looked like Overton was talking (still whining) while Points (I think) was readying to putt on the 18th. He's 27 and needs to learn to act more professional. Take some Zen classes or something...

Yeah that was rediculous. I can't believe you'd act like that. Those greens are so perfect and I surely didn't see anything. He mis-read the putt but even if he didn't and it was that bad of a break, so be it. I hope he never wins.

I agree. My first thought when he did that was that he was acting exactly like some 13 year-old kid I saw in a US Kids tournament last year.

Contrast that with Appleby, who looked exactly the same all day and rolled that putt home on 18 like it was never in doubt.

Yeah, watching Overton and D.A. Points today was just embarrassing. Appleby was professional all day and he completely deserves the win.

Also of no help to him were his reactions to stray tee shots on holes immediately preceding the 17th. During an interview earlier in the broadcast, Overton said his Dad, an excitable football and baseball player, was his competitive model. I hope some wizened veteran gives him some fatherly advice about how these eruptions have no place on the golf course and actually hurt your chances to win. Jeff seems like a nice guy, and he clearly has game. Let's hope he adjusts.

He needs to go lay on Bob Rotella's couch.

Overton and Points both showed poor control over their emotions, and for Overton it might have cost him the tournament. I'm sure inside I'd be really upset if a cleat mark messed up my putt, and cost me 1st place, but you can't carry on like he did in public and on national television. They were both throwing clubs, ranting, and whining on every bad shot they made.

I do give props to Overton for almost making the final putt for birdie, it was a sweet putt, especially given the distance and hills. Appleby in contrast seemed calm and cool all day, a true professional.

So I was watching this live now on dvr and this thread forced me to fast forward 2 hours to see the "antics". Talk about makin an ass of yourself on tv. I actually was cheerin for Overton but when he did that I said Appleby definitely deserves it. The players and the dropping or tossing of the clubs has really been putting me in a funk too.

Wow, pretty easy to crucify him from the couch. Play yourself into contention to win a PGA tour event, and then you can show everyone what a "proper" reaction is. Sheesh.

Overton acted out long before it cost him the match, and if Point was paying attention to the leaderboard he knew he was playing for 3rd place unless he did a Tanya Harding to Overton. I have no issue with showing some emotion in a competitive sport, but these guys were over the top. Connors was intense on the tennis court and McEnroe was a cry baby, there's a difference.

Hes a professional and it does come off that he acted kind of silly thats all. It just shows a lack of self control and maturity. 2 things a man should have by his age. Hopefully he learns from this experience.

In case you can't read lips or are new to the wonderful, apparently exciting, but inevitably predictable world of profanity...
Overton, 6-8 minutes after the 'spike mark' that could have just been a nervy putt hit with poor pace by a guy who holds the putter like a beer-league softball player holds his bat (tight as hell!) could be seen on t.v. saying: "This is f*****g b***s***t".

I agree. His childish antics were, and are, f*****g b***s***t. Oh poor Jeff, he missed a putt. Oh poor Jeff, he's a hothead who loses the plot after anything goes poorly.

Maybe if he didn't do that dipshit body English routine after every shot, you know the one that makes him look like the waddly-fat 65 year old shooting 110 on your local clover patch, he would be able to maintain his focus and emotion on the course instead of looking like a chubby, flushed 15 year old who just got called a sissy by the football coach.

The guy's got a boatload of talent...and he should act like he does. He doesn't have to be Mother Theresa. I'd rather see him take all that emotion and convert it into a burning, steely arrogance. He has TONS of game.

Appeared that Overton was on his way to a "dick meeting" today. I agree with the earlier poster that I'm not rooting for him to win anytime soon-if ever.

I wanted to root for Overton but, as stated, his antics were a real turn offs. Appleby's a real pro and showed it yesterday.
