How many pure crap shots do you hit a round?

Thinking about this the other day. I shot 85 on a tougher course which is solid for me, but thinking back on the round I had some ridiculous chili dips that were an easy...easy...way to pick up three strokes. I'm not counting a little thinned shot or even a shank here and there, I'm talking the disgusting chip from 10yds where you lay sod over the ball, or the opposite skulled pitch that flies the green and puts you in deep trouble?

I personally think I hit a lot more of these shots then I should as a 13hcp. I really don't know my average as I don't track them, but I'm thinking three shots a round are pure BS and score killers.

You guys in the same boat? And God help me if I ever figure out how to stop doing it, talk about easy way to help the handicap.

happens once in awhile. usually happens when I start thinking too much. yesterday I was playing a par 3 course near my work and there was a particular hole that i double bogeyed on. Its a easy 160 yard hole that I've birdied plenty of times. There was wind headed right at me but not enough to club up, but i knew i had to hit a strong shot, low to get it on the green.

what do i do? chunk it like 4 inches behind the ball and the ball only went like 70 yards. I just need to take a step back and breathe and forget about it.

i can relate. my purely disgusting shots tend to be purely disgusting putts. ill three putt sometimes from 30 feet or even 20 feet. it will be like dynamite goes off in my hands and ill blow a 20 foot putt 6 feet by the hole... sometimes ill leave it 6 feet short.. putts that are just so bad that i dont even know what to do... three putting is just throwing away strokes... but also to take it to the long game.. sometimes i spray my driver wayyyyyy left (lefty golfer). which never leads to anything good except when i get lucky and hit a tree or something.. im usually pretty good with those 2 things but sometimes the demons creep in and i find myself marking down bogies.

Yeah I have at least 5 or so a round that kill my score.

I'm getting better, but I'm with you-I HATE sand. I played three days in a row last week and shot 78, 79, 81. Good rounds for me, due primarily to

NO flubbed shots. I hit some bad drives that cost me some strokes, and missed some putts, but it's amazing how much easier it is to break 80 when every shot goes forward approximately the distance you were planning on. I avoided sand at all costs, went in once, and was happy to get out with a bogey.

I'm with you there. Worst part of my game is the sand (which is odd since I love the short flop shots around the green). Playing in the sand will definately add shots to my score.

I don't seem to duff or chunk the ball very much. Maybe once or twice in the thick rough. Long pitch/bump-n-run/long chips are a weakness of mine. I'll oftens time hit it too hard and have to chip back on or ensure a two or three putt. If I were to ball park an average number of wasted shots (bad sand shots, bad chips/pitch shots, etc) maybe 3-5 a round.

I've actually come to not fear bunker shots anymore. I had some great outs yesterday and one from a fairway bunker with a 8 iron that got me within chipping distance to the green. Been using my 60* around the green and my 56* when I have a bit of distance to play with.

As for the original question, I can't give a hard number but I'd say I leave about 5-6 strokes out on the course due to flubbing chips or 3 putts. It's frustrating but as my rounds have gotten better I'm starting to realize it is more of a focus and intent issue than anything. Usually when I start going bad it's because I'm rushing and have no real purpose to what I'm doing.

It makes me feel better to see so many low handicap players admitting to this. I'm often amazed when I play with a good player and he hits a genuinely bad shot, but apparently it is pretty common.

I can honestly say that if I shoot my handicap, I have an average of 10 shots that are just worthless - a chip that goes 12 inches, a 30 yard drive, making shooting par in a sand trap, etc.

im good for at least one a round
usually a chunky style fat shot or a sprayed drive

im pretty good at getting up and down though, so i dont let it bother me too too much

but yeah, it happens

today for example

210 yd par 3, into the wind (hitting 4i)
i need to go at this one to get there....what do i do? chunk it about 1/2 way there into some really tall fescue
but then step up and hit SW to 2 feet and tap in par.....theres more than one way to par holes...just more embarassing this way!! hahah!

I know it's the basic of basic things, but the bad chips/pitches comes down to me peeking and plain lifting my head. Still don't know why this is so hard, but it happens. Sometimes a decel, but not often anymore.

I find that when I try to muscle up and hit an iron hard, I'll stop my backswing short and end up coming in steep and chili dipping one, that pisses me off because it's more a mental thing then a swing issue.

I don't even count "sprayed" drives, because I have around 10 a round...sadly.

My two biggest issues that affect my scores are how well I play from 100 yards and in (this is an issue for EVERY amateur, though) and being smart about club selection and shot shape.

I hit the ball a long way and can work it - but a lot of times I make the wrong choice about an approach shot and end up pissing away strokes.

Lately, I've had a few days where after the round I'm like: "F**k, I hit it really well. How'd I shoot 82/3/4/5"

I'd also been without a 60 degree wedge for 2 weeks and found that if I missed a green, I was dead unless I was underneath the hole. Short game shots are about confidence and feel, and without my 'weapon of choice' I really p*ssed down my leg a lot during shots aroud the green the last few weeks.

Not getting up and down from inside of 50 yards makes me feel like poop.

Don't most people hit about the same number, regardless of their handicaps, because their definition of "crap" changes?

I hit a lousy wedge from 108 yards today. Left me with a 30 footer for birdie. Tapped in for par. That'd be a "pure crap" shot for me.
