So the shanks cost me a spot on my hs team. After being in 3rd with a +1 and a +6 I got the shanks and just can't control them at all. I tried my hardest and shot 51 with 11 chips. I am so pissed at myself for this because all I had to do was put together a final 9 (18 18 9) decent holes of golf and I would be fine but now I have to play a sudden death playoff with some kid who had the best round of his life on one day (78) and holed out for eagled 18 on the second day just to make the cut. But the question is what is a quick bandade for the f%<*€Β₯ shanks because once they start they just get worse.

I'm going to give you a trick which is probably a bad idea but has worked wonders for me on a few occassions. I once got paired up with an older guy - pretty nice but a total hack (like me). We played through 2 holes ok and then we both started shanking every shot. It got ridiculous. No matter what I did, I could not put the club face on the ball. He told me to line up as normal but with my club about 2 inches inside the ball (ie . .closer to me).

Sure enough, it worked. I must've made the mental correction during the downswing and THWACK, I managed to advance the ball. This little fix didn't last long but I was able to get through the round by purposely lining up the ball wrong (ie, with it inside or outside where it should be). I have used this little trick a few times since and it has always worked - temporarily.

you must have a pretty good high school team at your school, bunch of white guys with rich parents?

but in all seriousness. Just talk with the coach and maybe see someone to work through what your doing to cause shanks.

here are some common causes of the shanks.

you are standing too close to the ball...or your weight is too far forward on the balls of your feet (this happened to me earlier this year)...or your swing is coming way too far from the inside, this will cause pushes, big hooks, and some shanks...

i obviously cant tell you exactly what youre doing but maybe one of these things are the cause...good luck

Not sure if it really works but I've heard this somewhere.

Step 1: Put all your change in your left pocket.

Step 2: Tie your left shoe in a double knot.

Step 3: Turn your hat around backwards.

Step 4: Put a tee behind your left ear.

Give it a try and let us know the results.

Wedges - Warrior (52 & 56 degree)

Putter - STX Envision

Ball of choice - Callaway TOUR i(s)

I find I start shanking if I decellerate and don't commit to the shot.

My instructor says "if you can't commit, don't hit"

Also I need a proper swing with a wedge as partial lob wedges can be disasterous for me

just go away, people like you are pathetic.

Back to the shanks, I found i shank the ball when i don't keep my head still, its when i look up way to quick, this drives my body towards the ball and causes the hozel to come into play.

................... wow,,,its a joke and sadly its kinda true which is why I said it. Did you play high school golf? I did and the high school teams that were deep with great players were the high class white american schools, sorry to say but its true, I apologize if it offends you I wasnt trying to and if you never experienced it that still doesnt give you the right to use the words you did. Anyway back to the original topic.

You are a .3 and you can't make your hs team?

I have no cure for the shanks. A lot of times when you have the shanks you can actually be much closer to a good swing than if you were hooking or slicing it.

IMO, anxiety is usually the cause of shanking. Fear of shanking just makes it worse. It goes something like this: Muscles tighten, backswing becomes too quick and incomplete. Arms get ahead of your body movements, forcing the club outside of your plane.

You have to do something mentally to get rid of the muscle tension and concentrate on making a full, free flowing swing with perfect timing.

I would have a talk with the coach one on one if I were the OP, get a little counsel and encouragment. I know thats what our coach would do with players when they were in a stretch of terrible playing. Seems to help alot,

i did this.i talked to him right after the round and was like is there any way i can have another look so i have a play off with the #12 whenever he decided to schedule it. it helped a lot that i was medalist the first day and 3rd the second day. i worked hard on the range yesterday and hit about 5 buckets and played 36

(18 par 3 course 18 real course) and hit the ball alot better with 2 birdies on the first 9. i have a lesson tomoro at 9 so hopefully my swing comes back even better and i put up a 31 or something the coach has never seen

Good luck man, way to put in the hard work.

As for the s**nks, know that all good players get them from time to time. Pay close attention to your weight at setup, and try to make as balanced and controlled swing as you can. Most often, mine have happened when I've got a bit too much weight on my toes, and my weight falls forward slightly during the swing.

thank you, the part about the toes makes alot of sense. im playing a kid whole a solid 10 hcp and he holed out for eagle on 18 to tie my overall so he has been getting some lucky breaks clearly but i think i can take him i just have to stay in my own head and not let him get to me... plus i had 64 yards in on the first hole which is a 388 yard par 4 last round. if that doesnt intimidate someone who hits a 250 yard fade idk what will.

Motteler621, I have seen a number of really bad posts by you in the past few weeks on different threads. Why do you have to be such a d**k to people? Jesus, it's hard to build up a reputation on a forum of thousands of people, but congrats, you are just that much of a d**khead.
