Announcers who say "fairway metal" and "utility club". I don't care what nomenclature is the most accurate, hearing someone say "fairway metal" or "utility club" makes them seem brand new to the game of golf and/or that they're stuck in 1992 or 2002 respectively. It's a fairway wood, or just call it a 3 wood, 4 wood, or 5 wood. And it's called a hybrid. Everybody on this forum gets this, and so should a paid golf announcer.

whats about adverts every five minutes

Well, that's a given. But the amount of advertising is still monumentally less annoying than it is during a football game.

I haven't watched golf in awhile. What I do recall disliking is never getting to see anyone but Tiger hit a shot.

Part of the reason the Ryder Cup is such a nice change of pace. You get to see matchplay

and golfers other than Tiger.

I hate it when they clearly get the club wrong, saying hybrid instead of fairway, vice versa. And i have even heard driver and 3 wood gotten wrong. I thought they were meant to be golfers!

I remember seeing an interview with one of the announcers (can't remember who) where they mentioned specific terms they have to use and how hard it is to get it right sometimes. One of them was "hole position". Apparently they had to say that and couldn't say "flag stick" or something similar.

Agreed I enjoyed seeing everyone play earlier. Nice getting to see Bubba Watson, I am going to stay up and watch live for a bit tonight.

It was a golf announcer who got the whole "fairway metal" thing started in the first place. Bobby Clampett was one of the first guys to play a metal wood in a PGA Tour event (one other pro was also using them, but painted black to avoid attracting attention) and happened to be on camera when he pulled out his 2 wood for a second shot to a par 5. The announcer said something like: "He's going for it with a fairway wood. But that one ... looks like it's made of metal? I guess we'll have to say he's going for it with a fairway metal." And that was that.

Stretch.

Pretty much the close ups on the ball are my one peeve. Today someone ran their putt past the hole and the rapid zoom / unzoom almost made me lose my cereal.

I just hate when they talk too much in general. There was a nationwide event earlier where there we no announcers, just the sounds of the course. I truly enjoyed that, it was relaxing and made me feel like I was there at the course.

I'm enjoying what I've seen of the Ryder Cup so far because for the most part, there aren't perpetual yells of "git in the hole".

Also, I'm glad to hear that "fairway metal" isn't an 'Americanism', and it's just one or two morons with the unfortunate power to reach the masses.

There's nothing on TV that I watch that I don't DVR. Unless the movie has no commercials. I just hate wasting time. Period. It's nice to be able to cut the time of a golf broadcast to about 1/3 of what it would be without the magic fast forward button.

Maybe not when Europe is hitting but it seems like Tiger is getting interrupted 3 times per shot.

I hate it when a cameraman stands directly behind a player who's practising his backswing...

Seriously, anyone else notice that today? Possibly only shown on UK coverage as it was a Sky cameraman. He walked around behind Tiger who was in the middle of practising his takeaway on the tee after a poor shot and got within, at most, 2 feet of him. Needless to say Tiger didn't even see him and hit him with the club. It was funny actually, Tiger just stood there for a minute staring him down. How can you be so stupid though? A struggling player who's trying to work out his swing and gets a TV camera almost literally shoved in his face. Beggars belief.

I personally prefer the term "fairway metal". I know that common convention adheres to the traditional term, but the name "wood" was picked originally to reflect the composition of the club, so I think it makes sense to pick the current name likewise, or to at least shift it to a material-independent word. But then, I am a stickler for precise vocabulary. I usually use "wood" just because everone else does, but I'd prefer to use "metal".

I don't get why they do that. Of what benefit is that to the viewer, expecially when the ball is in the air? Are they going to get such a good look at the ball during the close-up that they're going to be able to say, "Yeah, based on that sidespin he's going to get the 10 to 12 yards of draw that he needs to get it around the tree and onto the green, although I'm not sure he has enough backspin to hold it pin high." Seriously, it's just a ball spinning fast and flying high, I'd prefer a big picture view so I an actually tell where it is and watch its trajectory.
