When is it too cold to play golf? Probably right around freezing.

When is it too cold to stop playing golf? That's a silly question. "We can't stop playing it's too cold to stop!"
So at some point you are unable to stop playing golf as it has become too cold to stop. Sounds dangerous, I hope it never gets so cold that you MUST continue playing. :)

last week when I played it was 43* out. no problem

Golf clothes have come a long way in that you can keep really warm, but also have the flexability to swing. With my under armour coldgear compression stuff, I was completely warm and my swing didn't feel hindered at all. I say as long as I can get a tee in the ground (and the course is open) I'll play in any temp.

If I can feel my hands, I'll play. Once my hands get too cold I'm done for. I'm gonna say below freezing for the most part though.

When it stops being enjoyable.

One thing to add to this: wind kills enjoyment. It can be 20* and still (as in no wind) and it's definitely be more fun than 50* and windy. When there is no wind you just don't feel the cold as much, because it's not being shoved in your face (and your legs, and your arms, and your body).

I would say 43 degrees is the lowest. One question though, Im assuming the courses are closed arent they? so do you just walk on to play

well it was un usually cold today and high temp was 43 degrees. I would need alot of layers to actually play in that weather but it was definitly possible.

I am currently at this point with golf. I have only been playing since this August and have the bug hard core. I live in NY and the weather is turning fast to freezing cold. I went out and got some cold weather gear. Not too bad i wear a layer of my Nike cold weather moc, a turtle neck and than a another layer of under armor long sleeve with a thermal vest wool cap, wind pants over my khakis and gold weather gloves. Have gone out a few times but this week will be my coldest outing. Thick socks and gloves in between shots and I should be set. The reason for me going out this time of year is I do not like being bad at golf. I am able to hit 3 or 4 balls per hole in the winter and it has been helping my short game. Is it a smart idea to golf in this weather?

Agree with those who mention the WIND as a key factor. 33-40° can be very tolerable if the sun is out a little and there is little to no wind. Local courses here offer the covered carts with a small propane heater for $12 which keeps the cart about 55-60°. I played a great round last Saturday when it was about 37°, party sunny, and no wind. It was not uncomfortable in the least. I wore a Nike stocking cap, a polo with a thermal compression mock under it and a long sleeve sweater. Didn't even have to break out the second winter glove.

Hoping to sneak out again this week on Friday or Saturday when they say it will get back to the upper 30's...

The wind would be my only restricting factor. Otherwise I toss the cart cover on, fire up the heater, and play golf. I stay completely warm and toasty for the entire round except for the minute or two I get out to hit the ball.

20's are no problem with a little heat.

Doesn't seem like the courses over here have any cart covers. Do your courses provide them along with the heater?

For me, I draw the line at 42 F, so I sadly won't be playing anytime soon according to weather.com. That said, a lot of you are inspiring me to suck it up and try to play on a sunny, windless day in the mid-30s.

We play all year round here (apart from the 1-2 days when it snows) and lowest I have played in is -2C which is about 28F. Just wear plenty of layers and a woolen hat and you are fine. Once you start walking you warm up pretty quick. Can be a bit of a hazard on your shafts though. I bent my 3i shaft when I chunked a shot from the frozen fairway!

    • Day 35 (15 Dec 25) - Short session today focused on exaggerated weight shift using left heel trigger.  Hit a few pitches using the process to help capture the feel.
    • Day 125 12-15 Half swings with flow drill. Focused on rhythm, loading trail side then getting to lead side correctly. Hit a few foam balls but mostly drilling without ball.
    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
