I have '09 Burner irons with standard loft and lie. I hit off a hitting board the other day and like I suspected, I'm a better fit for a more upright lie. I was thinking about getting them bent to one or two degrees more upright but the guy fitting me told me they are much more likely to break than a forged iron. I asked about the probability but he was hesitant to give me any numbers, all he'd say is they might break.

So, have any of you had your cast irons bent. Success or failure? Any other input is much appreciated.

The fitter is right. Mostly they won't break, but sometimes they just do. It's sort of suck 'em and see.

The probability that any given club will break is fairly low, but over a whole set there is a decent chance one might break.

I have had every set of clubs I owned bent 2 deg up and never had a problem. He is telling you worst case scenario and is being responsible in doing so. Maybe find a professional clubfitter in your area. Golf shops are not the place I would look. See if you can find a clubfitter.

I found this which appears to give some potentially reasonable info: http://www.clubrepairnews.com/techre...ding-clubs.htm

Can cast clubs be bent?
Most irons can be bent, but the question of being able to bend cast clubs is still asked by many. The simple answer to that question is “yes”. 17-4 stainless steel cast irons will be more difficult to bend since they are harder (C34-38 on the Rockwell Scale) than 431 (C18-25) or carbon steel (B 70-80). Keep in mind that we are assuming the iron has the proper heat treatment and annealing that will permit bending....

Is there a guarantee that a club will not break during bending?
Even the most skilled repair professionals cannot guarantee a club will not break while bending. Generally, breakage is a result of some type of inconsistency in the metallurgy of the club or manufacturing defect. Cast clubs may not have been heat-treated properly and can be very brittle. The hosel may break when subjected to bending pressure. Its possible the hosel of the iron may have been bored off-center resulting in inconsistent hosel wall thicknesses that crack when bent. None of these conditions can be identified prior to bending. However, breakage is very rare.

I have Ping G10's and had them bent from black dot (standard) to yellow dot (1.5* upright I think). I was warned as well by the guy that did mine. Luckily, there were no issues.

Bendability varies from model to model, even within the same family of irons. The X20s can be bent, but Callaway advises against bending the X22s.

In my experience, 2* seems to be the most clubsmiths want to bend an iron.

I just bent my Tour Burners 1° upright the other day. Taylor Made's do have a tendency to break more than other companies but if you're willing to risk it, I'd say go for it.

Hi @Jim Macdonald. I would refer you to the excellent post by @Adam C:
