Just that, how does alcohol (no more than 5 beers here!) effect your game?

I voted positively, but only to an extent of course. I enjoy a few beers during my golf rounds. Only at times, maybe a 1/4 to 1/3 of the times I play. But it is enjoyable to get out with a few good buddies or my dad and have a beer or two on each nine. Especially in the summer time. But there is a point of diminishing return of course. More than 3-4 beers during the round, I am not playing for score. But heck, golf is supposed to be fun, right? Why play for score and scrutinize over every shot? Sometimes it is ok to just have fun. It is a game after all. I wonder if this is what Sam Snead meant by "oily"? Ha ha.. I doubt it.

I added a third option so I could vote. I rarely drink and I don't know the last time I had anything within 24 hours of playing golf.

That is precisely what snead meant, haha. Law of diminishing returns, in terms of alcohol to golf scores, classic! I just want to get a solid consensus on how alcohol effects players. I have found that for me personally, the best rounds I've hit all have included the help from some liquid encouragement. This post stems from an argument me and one of my playing partners have, he is a strict no alcohol on the course kinda guy while I believe 3 beers is a pre-game ritual...

Ya If I ever make it to scratch I may have a different outlook but I'm not looking to find out who's an alcoholic here, just want to see how a slight buzz effects a bogey - mid - high - average - golfer.

N/A for me. I can barely afford the greens fees, let alone $6.00 beers.

Nothing wrong with a few beers on the course, but everyone's opinion on this is gonna be different. I've played with guys who had such a bad attitude towards those who have a few beers, and I've played with guys who look at golf as an excuse to power drink while they're away from the wife.

Can't drink yet, but I play with these two guys all the time that drink before, during, and after their rounds. I can't tell if it effects their game, probably because they'd play like hacks either way (they're your typical hackers complete with iron covers, ball fishers, stroke counters and all the like).

Maybe a constant buzz increases their tolerance levels.

I'm glad you added that last option, I very rarely drink alcohol either. I do remember the last time though, a bloody mary at Lakeridge golf course in Reno, the day after Thanksgiving around 1990 or so. The reason I remember isn't the drink, it's because it was the first time I had ever played with snow on the ground.

Depends on how many I have really... Me and my brother took my brother in law out when he first came in town, I shot a 43 front 9 and proceeded to shoot a 65 back 9 lol. So I would have to say yes but that outing was just for fun.

If I have a few beers while playing it loosens me up, but if I have more than 6 I see a drop in my game.

I don't drink at the course very often, but a little booze calms me down, and I have shot some of my better rounds when I was drinking. Only with a non-drinker to drive home too, might I add.

I voted positive, but it is really a minimal difference I have found and not a big deal unless you get buzzed out there. The only occasions I may have a brewski on the course is when I am on vacation/playing a resort type course/st. patrick's day. If you just have 1 or 2 out there, it really is not going to do much either way. For me, it is a little relaxing, and that is the only impact.

    • Why?  You would never be waiting on me.  I am one of the fastest players you will ever run into on the golf course.  I am extremely fit and almost always the first to the green and the first to the next tee box.  When I play with my 16 year old step son who is a 3 handicap, he tells me to slow down.  Also,  what does it take me?  40 seconds round trip to walk off 30 yards?  (which is the max I walk off)  I like to have a look at the break around the hole which helps me to hole out chips which I did for birdie from 27 yards just the other day.  I also do this while waiting on my playing partners to catch up to me so you need not worry about being irritated, I can pretty much guarantee you that you could not keep up with me on the golf course.  🙂
