I'm more perturbed by the unnecessary apostrophe.  "Lots."  When did this start?

Really?  Not really showing it this week after, in his words "the first injury free break in his career".  Lot's of good talent out there this week and sadly Tiger is not part of that group.  Now he could do a 61 tomorrow and not many would be surprised I guess, but he is not as good as the field right now, despite what Sean and he say :-)

And besides putting, he probably should spend some time in the practice bunker at home....

Re lot's - sorry (blush) .....

So for a new question, what if Tiger never won again?  I mean, he owned St. Andrews, Pebble, Torrey and his Chevron ....

For his trouble - nuttin' - oooops, "nothing".

How about this question, I'm going to the Barclays this August, is there any chance that Tiger won't be there? I know it's a little bit of a long shot but what do you all think?

So what are the impressions of Tiger's first match this season and his swing?  I know swing changes take time, but Tiger has already gone through swing changes a few times before, so he should take on adjustments quickly.  Despite bad luck with the bunkers I expected Tiger to place in or near the top 10 in scoring.

Does this mean Sean Foley's input is not that effective? Or does it just take a little longer to transition from an old-school swing to a stack-and-tilt-like swing?

From a few posts I have seen on this forum, those who have switched to stack-and-tilt appear to take it up quickly with positive results. So I wonder why Tiger would have issues with a similar transition, unless Foley has not correctly conveyed some SnT-like principles, which could contribute to inconsistencies in a swing.

At the Farms Insurance Open, Tiger had 12 bogeys and 13 birdies, while Bubba Watson had only 8 bogeys, 20 birdies, and 2 eagles.

Whatever Tiger has been working on the past couple of months, I think he needs to change his game plan.

2011 Goals:
* Improve club-head speed to 90 mph with the driver
* Ensure increased speed does not compromise accuracy
* Prevent overextending on the back-swing (left-arm is bending too much at the top)
* Relax arms initially at address ( too tense)* Play more full rounds (failed from 2010)

I just don't get the folks who are trumpeting "just wait 'til Tiger gets back on his game." Exactly how long do we wait? He has had nothing but time to practice for the last year. And what does he have to show for it? In 2008, he won at Torrey Pines with a bad knee. Now he is healthy with no big distractions--and playing like a journeyman. Right now he is the poster boy for how much of a mental game golf is. Tiger just no longer has the same mental make-up he had when he was a class above everybody else. Now he's just another member of the upper tier, and thus far moving down rather than up. I personally think the likelihood of his winning 4 or 5 more majors is very slim. I'll be surprised if he wins one or two more.

hate to admit it but at this point, i have to agree.im not gonna say "its over johnny" yet but it sure is looking that way

Unless he is injured, no way. He plays golf to win majors, said so himself. If he can play, he will play. How long we (or him) should wait for Tiger to win again? His last big swing change took two years to fully implement, so I wouldn't hold my breath. His performance is currently variable, but I think it's a matter of time before he wins again. He was playing good at Chevron last year, he had some tendencies last week, it will come.

He could do a Faldo and disappear to work on his swing in private, but I don't think that's necessary considering Tiger was pretty solid on Thursday and Friday, Putting together 4 straight days of solid play, and a season long stretch of weekends like that may be a couple years away, but I don't think he's too far away from being able to win the odd event.

He does disappear between every tournament he plays. He claims his performance on the course is worse than when he practice. If that is true or not can of course be questioned, but I don't have a problem believing his swing holds better up in private. It's about confidence and muscle memory. When the swing is implemented enough that he can trust his swing, he can start winning again.

We already know he didn't play well at Farmers, and it's not exactly news that Tiger doesn't commit to a whole season in February. We know he'll play the majors and probably a couple other tournaments, other than that it's usually announced a week or two before.

I think people are failing to take into account the guy just hasnt putted like we are used to seeing in about 2 years.

Hes been talking about his golf swing so much and chalking up putting to him "not making them" when I myself have noticed he dies putts in far more often now than he ever used to. Hell hit these horrible baby ones that come up low and short far more often than I can ever remember him doing.

I think that Tiger will return to form.  He won't be as dominate as in years past, but really, like sean_miller said, that was some of the best golf EVER so that maybe too much to expect anyways.  People just got to remember that he made major swing changes and that takes time... I mean he's only been working on this stuff since the summer.  I'm sure as some of the changes start to become more natural he'll start winning again.

I knew this tread is going to come up when Tiger plays first PGA tournament this year.

Last year, I and Iacas had a bet if Tiger is going to win any PGA tournament this year.

Of course, I bet he won't  :)  After seeing his performance on Farmer's, I am confident.

You know maybe if Tiger played more than a handful of tournaments he would probably win. But he is taking this weekend off, a fairly popular tournament. Most big names are playing but him. Why is that?

Sore loser?

Maybe he just doesn't need the money? Maybe he feels practice is doing him more good than competition right now? Maybe he promised to take his kids to Chuck E Cheese's? Maybe there's a whole van full of strippers to plow through by Sunday?

Whatever. Tiger long ago earned the right to play the events he feels like playing.

I like all of your "maybe's" (funny or not as the case may be ....) except the second one, i.e. "practice is doing him more good than competition right now".  He flatly contradicated that himself in the recent interview - it's a clear case (to him) of not taking his game from his private world to the tour.  I'm inclined to believe him.

TW needs to play a rigorous PGA schedule in 2011 and claw his way back on top IMO - it's all in the head.  Maybe that's what he'll do - we shall see.  It's clear that he likes to keep us guessing - nothing wrong with that I suppose.  Yes, he "has the right" to do what he likes - but is he being smart if he focuses on major events + a few others during the year?

Maybe he's letting other players, like Phil, have the spotlight in Phoenix. Much like Phil does for Tiger at his pet events. As much as they don't hang out, I suspect they do actually get the importance of the other to the generic golfing public. Sometimes you can sell the confrontation and sometimes it makes sense for one guy to shine.

Either way, a lot of guys with a full schedules seem to run out of gas by the time the PGA Championship rolls around. Almost to a man, they admit they should have taken some weeks off.

    • Day 11: 2/16/2025 Rince and Repeat: Just like yesterday I spent several 5-10 minute sessions working on what I learned on Friday.
    • Quick update. So, I got the PXG Secret Weapon and I have to say I like it... mostly. (see below) I spent some time with it on the range and I even gathered some data in doors. I'm not going to post data yet, as my swing is still a bit of a work in progress and I'd like to gather some more data after I settle down a little bit more. But here's my review.  First as a driver replacement. ... IMO it is not a replacement, it's clearly more of a supplement... for me anyway. Not long enough to really replace the driver. For me it's about 20 yards short of my driver. It is longer than my 30-wood off the tee. (15 yards-ish) I will say it is easier to hit off the tee than my 3-wood. I get some of my best shots teeing it low, but I also get some of my worst. If I tee it about a full inch off the ground I get very consistent shots. Super repeatable. Amazingly repeatable even with my messy swing. Off the tee, I find it draw biased just a bit. You can tinker with the set up if that isn't your personal cup of tea.  As a 3-wood replacement. For me it's about perfect. It's longer than my 3-wood off the deck (my data showed 10 yards longer) and it has a gentle fade to it, which I love. You do need a clean lie, but I never hit my 3-wood off anything but a clean lie anyway. I found it interesting that I hit a gentle fade off the deck and a slight draw off a tee. I'm sure that's not uncommon. Again, you can tinker with the set up to optimize that if you wanted to... I don't want to.  It's clearly a lot longer than my 3-wood off the tee. Easier to hit off the tee than my 3 wood, and off the deck it's also longer. So, it's a no-brainer 3-wood replacement for me. I will say that over the years I've learned to use my 3-wood for this low-flying-100-yard-punch-out-from-under-a-tree shot.  I'll have to see if the Secret Weapon can handle that duty. But it's going in the bag to replace the 3-wood.  I also turned my 5-wood down from 19 degrees to 17 degrees. ... Incidentally my 3-wood had been 16 degrees. I used to always hit my 5 wood and my hybrid about the same distance. This adjustment helps my gapping a bit at the top of the bag. I can clearly hit my 5-wood farther than my hybrid now.  Overall on the PXG Secret Weapon. The good: It's clearly longer and easier to hit off the tee than my 3-wood. It's a bit longer off the deck than my 3-wood.  It's super forgiving... surprisingly so.  It's uber adjustable. ... Although I do suggest getting fit for it. That will save you having to (or wanting to) buy a weight kit just to try out the infinite number of set ups. The headcover is super cool.  The maybe not so good: Shots out of the middle sound great. Shots off the heal sound great. Shots off the toe sound ... what's the work... clangy? It's very forgiving off the toe and the heal. The flight and the distance are incredibly consistent. But the sound off the toe isn't great.  For me I tend to draw it off the tee and fade it off the deck. You can set it up to be biased either way, but in my hands I think if I set up a draw off the deck, that might induce a duck hook off the tee. ... In fairness that could also be where my swing is at right now.  It's pretty spendy. ... If I really stop and think about it, I paid $450 for a new 3-wood. Granted it's a better performing 3-wood. But for me it's really a 3-wood replacement.
    • I've got my pain mostly under control and the meds are working.   I'd like to join.
    • I would definitely attend if my calendar allows.
    • Finland: I've played Mid-Night Golf in Finland. Really cool. I looked at the schedule for my week out there and I saw that we were teeing off at 9PM... Feels weird, 9 PM tee time. But it was really great. We finished well after 1AM and sat around and drank on the golf course terrace. It was cool. It's really easy to loose track of time when the sun doesn't set.  Here's a picture of me in Finland hitting my approach on the final hole. It's roughly 1:30AM in this photo.  Egypt: Another cool experience was playing golf in Egypt. The entire course is sand. The greens are called browns, cuz they are just sand with oil poured on them and pounded down a bit. Your ball gets kind of oily when you putt, but the caddy cleans it for you after each hole. You carry around a little piece of fake grass (maybe 2 foot square) and place your ball on it each time before you hit. That is except when you go into a sandtrap. The sandtraps are just areas marked off where you don't get to use your little piece of astro-turf. Sometimes they are dug down a bit to make a bunker, sometimes not.  Spain: No special events or anything, but I played a bunch of golf in Spain in the mid-1990's. At that time Spain's economy wasn't doing the best and Europe hadn't quite switched to the Euro. So Spain was using the Peseta. The country of Spain has some incredibly breathtaking courses. (incredible scenery in general) But because of the conversion from the dollar to the Peseta (If memory serves it was 150 to 1), I got to play them for what I remember as being incredibly inexpensive prices. Gorgeous country and really nice people.  Holland or The Netherlands: I lived for a couple of years in what's called The Flevoland in Holland. It's one of the Dutch provinces and it's all land that was recovered from the sea. So, it's all under sea-level. One of the courses I played a few times out there had flags on every hole to show just how deep the water would be if it wasn't for the dams.
