Custom Fitting Result?

For those here who have been custom fitted using a launch monitor, did you get the same result on the course with what you see on the Launch monitor?  Do you gain the same yardage on the course with what you see on the launch monitor?  And how much did you pay to get custom fitted using a launch monitor?

I'll tell you when I actually get the new sticks.

I paid the local equivalent of $65 for a driver fitting, iron fitting, video swing analysis and (more or less) club making 101 seminar. Spent almost four hours in the guy's workshop. Damn interesting, I'll try and post more about it sometime.

I had a custom fitting last summer, the guy had a little gazeebo thing set up on the range (he was a mobile fitter) I found that the numbers we were getting on his launch monitor were pretty accurate, he said the range balls were about 10-15% reduced flight, so I got three or four balls out of my bag and hit those and they were right on the money.

The fitting cost me $99, if I made a purchase from him I got $75 discount, I had new shafts put into my r7 irons and I got the $75 off, and OMG what a difference, my first time out with the new shafts I shot 79, the second time out: 79, I think I have had only one round in the low 90's and all the others are low 80's. I have had quite a bit of personal/familly problems since the end of Aug and played little golf.

I can't wait to get back out and played serious golf and get into single digits!

I havent checked my index since last fall but since getting fit for my new clubs which I hadnt been fitted for the old ones, I can say I have seen a improvement. They changed my flex on my irons and driver and the loft of my driver. Although the yardage is 'bout the same as on the monitor, I think I hit it a little longer now (although I thought I was hitting it longer in the first place but now I know that was ego). I didnt pay anything at Golfsmith to be fitted 'since I purchased the clubs, but would not buy another set off the rack. Hope this helps. Tim

Last week I was fitted for irons. I bought used Mizuno's MP33's that I hit perfectly on the Golf Galaxy simulator but horribly on the golf course. A club repairman and a Pro golfer adjusted the length and grips ($60) for me and gave me a lesson ($45). Now I hit them good on the golf course. Then I got fitted for golf balls ($21 at Golf Galaxy). I look forward to playing much better than I did last year and improving on my 13 handicap.

Why do you think the "Golf Galaxy" simulator was so far off?

I would never trust launch monitor numbers for distance, but everything else it measures is useful, such as shot dispersal, ballooning, ball contact. I think the launch monitor distance numbers tend to stroke our egos, but its not useful unless you bring your own club in and compare against the distance you already know you hit. Its possible to get a general idea about distances, but I wouldnt feel comfortable unless I can compare against my own clubs.

I also only go to a fitting when its free. The Ping fitting, for example, is a great way to get an idea of the process.

I've seen fittings going on at the range but have always kinda been afraid to go see them because my clubs a kinda cheap (I like them) and am concerned that they will just hard sell me on upgrading them. I'm not opposed to changing shafts or tweaking my set to better fit me, so I have a few questions.

Is it best to go to a golf store or mobile fitters on the range?

When they say "Fitting" Does that mean just the stiffnes & length of my shafts *insert joke here* or does it take into account the grips and is it possible to change the setup of the club head itself based on how I swing?

What would be the average cost of new shafts & grips after being fitted?

If I have a tendency to slice or hook would a fitting help in those areas?

For those who have it done, did you notice an immediate improvment to your game or did it take a while to get used to the new set up?

I've tested new clubs sided by side with my own clubs, and I've had wedges and irons adjusted based on simulator data. So far it's been a successful process. My distances on the course are pretty much the same as those generated by the simulator. I've had subsequent sets of irons and wedges bent to those specs and been happy with them all. Getting the before and after data was free, but the adjustments and the new clubs (fairway wood and driver) were oviously not free.

If I saw a fitting going on at a range, I would do it! Thats the best situation. You can try something out, and you might be able to get a feel for the different clubs out there.

Everyone should have a fitting once, just so they know they arent using club specs that are completely wrong. For example, if the lie of your irons are off, that could really affect your ability to just hit it straight.

Shafts are a big factor, but I would say to err on the soft side. Softer shafts make you swing slower with good rhythm.

As far as grips, try asking the golf shop to add an extra layer of tape or two (or three) during a grip change. Try it out.

If you are using the wrong club setup, you should see an immediate improvement.

If you dont see an improvement, then you know you gotta work on swing mechanics.

Either way, its good.

Got full driver fitting on launch monitor about 26 months ago. I hit five driver combinations in a little over an hour. I bought a new driver (my current one), so the fitting was free.

Odd outcome: I get about 15 yards more carry on the course than I did on the launch monitor. People at shop said they set the monitor conservatively so people don't get unrealistic promise of distance.

Free Fitting if you buy the clubs from them.    Otherwise I would pay for them.   How could club fitters earn their living if it was free?   Not to mention they spent a fortune to buy the launch monitor.

I have my 1st Driver fitting at the range with the lunch monitor last week.The previous fitting was done in doors. For the fitting at the range , you can see the actual ball flight , distance and the data from the LM. So got myself fitted with 910D2 With Kai'li 70 Stiff .

The only thing I can add to this ,,,,because I just went down that road.....is DONT get fitted at a big box store.Those launch monitors in there are very generous to say the least,those guys in there are trying to sell sell sell and thats it.

I'd have to say, NEVER EVER do an Iron Fitting on a Golf Galaxy or Golf Smith...ALWAYS off. The best fitting out there you can get is out on the range.

Yeah I heard about their Launch Monitor showing greater numbers than actual.

Sorry man, I live in Japan, and all the club fittings are free. Even though they have an amazing amount of electronics in this country, it still makes sense to me to make it free. If you find a club that works, you are more likely to buy it. They recycle a lot of used clubs in most stores, usually in great condition, so it helps to sell these clubs if you can try them out. Also, they usually have a deal where you can return the used club after a day or two at the range, and get 70-85% of your money back. Either way, the machines are good for selling used clubs, as well as club fitting. The club fitting process is about finding the right setup for someone, and that can be a long process, so I'd say I might pay for that from a small-business fitter, but just to use the machine, I think it should always be free if you are trying out the store clubs.

I fitted myself for my driver, picked out my driver, club length, grip size, and shaft. Its a pretty damn good driver

For my irons, i just got the gaps fixed and the lie adjusted...
