Went out and took some video today.

I would guess you have some issues with the driver occasionally?

From that video your shaft alignment with the driver is poor. I cant tell about the 5 iron but I would guess it is similar. Gotta keep the hands in the proper position

Lay a shaft down parallel to the target line behind the ball. Make sure the shaft of your driver is 90* to that shaft.

Cant tell much else but that would be my first blush advice, if you were even looking for advice lol

Just sharing more than anything. Thanks though.

I do understand what you're saying about my hands. I think it's more the angle I set up my camera than anything. Plus I'm aiming quite a bit left in relation to those tee markers. Next time around I'll set up myself more square with the camera... I was actually thinking about that while taking these shots, but daylight was running short.

  • 3 years later...

So I've had this Flip camera for about a year now and until today its been sitting in my room collecting dust. Took it out to practice today and captured some footage of my 4iron. This is one single swing, but I also have an 8minute reel. I can post that if anyone is interested.

I've really been battling a pull recently and although I hit this only very slightly left of the target, (the massive tree that you can't really see as its camouflaged into the mountain, but the target tree is just below and slightly left of the palm tree on the top of the hill that my ball splits right through.) I've managed to spot why this may be happening. If anyone can freeze the video when my club is parallel to the ground at takeaway you can clearly see how shut my clubface is. I'll be working on that for sure. Hooray for video replay! Other than that, this was a really solid swing. I like my plane, tempo, balance and really like my speed through impact.

Ben post the 8 minutes of vid. Be like golf porn for most of us. Swing is just beautiful. Watching the ball launch off the club face is amazing.

Beautiful swing. I'd be interesting in watching the 8 minute reel. I love how you can start recording then step up and stripe a 4 iron.

Alright, well, 78minutes to go and it'll be up on youtube, ha. In this one I give little hand gestures so I know what I'm looking at while reviewing. When I point behind me I've pulled it, point away from me is a push and a thumbs up is a nice one.

Yeah, hahaha, I really did crank on that one. Kinda took me surprise too quite honestly. That one was once I finally got myself framed in the camera, about seven takes screwing around with that.

I don't think there's much wrong with your position at P2, Ben. Looks nicely square to the arc.

Since the camera is on the ground, with the ball in the middle and angled left, still positions will be difficult to spot. At least if you want to compare them against other swings with other camera setups.

Its a nice swing but if you look at the line of your feet compared to your shoulders, both should be parallel so something is a good bit out. Would you class yourself as a two plane golfer ??

Wow you don't really take the hands in on the takeaway, you take them more out and away. If you said you were a 12 hcp people would probably tell you to change that, but obviously it works for you. Funny how great golfers can have vastly different swings.

The view on the range there is beautiful. I'm jealous.

I have two golf swing mentors, Fred Couples and Ben Hogan and I pick and choose from both styles of swings.

In Hogan's Power Golf you'll find this little diagram.

Hogan-BallPosition.jpg

In an extrememly condensed version, and from memory as its been a few years since I've reviewed Power Golf. The book and his instruction reads with the longer the iron he likes to take a closed stance which aids him in initiating the downswing with the hips.

And as far as Fred Couples goes. Yes, I am a fan of his super outside then redirection move, which is actually what Hogan preaches, but Fred takes it to a different level. I also love his tempo, transition to the downswing and demeanor.

Some Fred, lots of Hogan.

And yeah, Angeles National is not only a great golf course, but has a fantastic practice facitility as well. On any given day you will find some pretty serious golfers out there practicing. From PGA Tour players to Futures Tour girls to college teams. Its a great environment for people really serious about golf.

Quite possible. Its been a while since I've picked up Five Lessons too... I should probably review both books sooner than later.

Here's a few more vids from today. 3wood first, then driver. I was nuking both today. Played around with my grip and getting my hands in a better position in the takeaway. It worked!

I echo others above in a few areas.  Where is your target in these videos?  What type of shot are you trying to hit here?

To me, your feet look quite closed at address, with the ball flight starting well left of where you are set at address.

I thought so as well ^^^

Looks like the ball is starting well left of your foot line?  If you are playing a big cut...i guess that's great if it's working for you.

Your setup looks much more like a draw setup...

    • First, it is on free TV. NBC is free to anyone with an antenna, and is on almost any TV in the U.S. with a minimal amount of effort. Charging "a bargain price" would be incredibly dumb. They charged $750 and the event sold out almost immediately. You could better argue they should have charged MORE, not less. What happens if you charge less: ticket scalpers buy up even more of the tickets because they see value: if tickets were $250, they'd clearly have sold for $1k or more on the secondary market. That's tremendous value. Fans would end up paying the same or more, or just not being able to go. Sure, a few who happened to be online at the precise moment on a fast connection and didn't fumble with their credit cards might have gotten tickets for $250, but the secondary market and ticket brokers would have scooped up the vast majority with automated processes and bots and scripts, then re-sold them later on. This way, fans get to purchase the tickets, and the PGA is earning that revenue, not the secondary ticket brokers. Econ 101. Supply and Demand. Nope.
    • Edit - the link has no title, but basically Tiger wants $5 million for each US player to “donate to charity”   They could put the Ryder Cup on free to air tv, and charge the fans a bargain price to get in.  If you have to  give the players $60 million, that’s why the tickets are $750.
